EAST LONDON SYNAGOGUE.
Does anyone know if the records >from the East London Synagogue were saved
when it closed,I think in the 1970's.
My grand parents ( ELLMAN ) were married there in 1907.
I was adopted and only found my Jewish birth family a few years ago, so I am
trying to delve deeper into my background.
Thankyou

1901 Online Census - Availability Update #unitedkingdom

Jgsgbccc@...

The PRO have just published an updated statement on the likely public
availability of the 1901 Census Online (of England and Wales).
Public testing [likely to be at limited sites such as the Family Record
Centre] will take place, and is due to be completed by the end of August.

The announcemant says:
'We hope to complete this public testing phase by mid to late August.'
Interestingly, it does not specify which year!!!

There are no promises yet on when it will be available 'live' to the public via the Internet.

Further information can be found at:
http://www.pro.gov.uk/about/access/statement.htm

Hello,

Just for fun, I tried the FreeBMD site http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
with my surname and found a Katie WRESCHNER born in Whitechapel in Dec
1894. She may be a first cousin once removed of mine, >from a part of the
family with which no contact has
been maintained for about 110 years!!

How do I find details about her parents, siblings and
descendants? I did want to try the UK Census of 1901, but the site is
still unavailable.

Thanks,

Jonathan WRESCHNER

I don't think that Kazimiera is a typical Jewish name. Probably the
grand- aunt of Yaccov's Polish pal was named in honor of one of the
several Polish kings and several nobles surnamed Kazmierze. In the 17th
century at least one of them, grand duke Jan Kazimierz, granted a number
of privileges to the Jews of Minsk. Whether the great aunt was named
retroactively because of this relatively ancient grant, or for the
beneficence bestowed upon Jews by some other member of Kazimierz "clan",
I cannot say.

Also, Kazimierz or Kazmierz Dolny is a smallish town in Lublin
province.

And, in 1404, a huge fire devastated much of the then Polish capital of
Cracow. Afterwards the king ordered Jews who had been scattered throughout
the city to live apart in Cracow's suburb Kazimierz. It became an
entirely Jewish town. For centuries, its inhabitants led their lives
isolated >from the rest of the world, connected to outsiders only through
whatever economic relationships they could establish.

During the 19th and 20th century Jewish parents abroad and in the US
sometimes endowed their children with names in honor of some important
head of state or government offical who they thought was "good to the
Jews."

I don't recall reading anywhere about given names, male or female, being
place-names (toponyms), so I imagine, perhaps wrongly, that the great-aunt
of Yaacov's friend was named after the Polish Kazimierz family and that
the origins of the great aunt, who is ">from Ivano Frankivsk," were not
necessarily Jewish, although the family of Yaccov's pal could have been
Jewish in the distant past. Quite a few Jews became converts, some
in "good faith," and some as a matter of "convenience."

First let me say we are looking forward to your upcoming data bases. Have
been doing research on Manchester relatives for several years with many
unanswered questions.
MY Grandparents Abraham Cohen & Yetta Blumenstein were married in 1899 at 24

later dates. Have also found death records of Annie [Hannah] Cohen in 1913
my ggm and Morris [Moses] Cohen in 1921 my ggf as last address 24 Julia

Robinson/Friedheim Town(s) of Origin #lithuania

Carol J. Robinson <caroljr@...>

I am trying to confirm the town(s) of origin of my Robinson family. My
grandfather was born in London, but his parents and grandparents came
from Russia. I was told they were >from the Vilna area. I have been
able to track down two pieces of evidence regarding their origin:

1. Isaac and Betsy (Yochabeila) Robinson's manifest. Their places of
birth listed on the manifest are hard to read but appear to be Galivan,
Gelivan, or Gelnaii, Russia. Yochabeila's maiden name was Freidheim,
and I found a Freidheim family arriving at Ellis Island as follows:
Sore and Chame Freichleim (children, last name mistranscribed) and Beila
Freidheim (mother, joining husband Carl Freidheim in NYC), January 02,
1904, place of residence Gelivan and Gilivan, Russia respectively.

2. Naturalization papers for Louis Robinson, Isaac and Yochabeila's
son. His birthplace (and that of his wife, Rachel) seems to read Velina
Russia, though the first letter is not absolutely certain.

I tried ShtetlSeeker and Shtetls of Lithuania and don't feel confident
that I have properly identified these locations. I would appreciate any
thoughts and information regarding them (and of course any contact with
anyone connected to these families). My Robinsons and Freidheims lived
in Chicago, Illinois once they arrived in the United States.
