SARAH NISGORETSKY #unitedkingdom

Sherwood Franklin <shepsel@...>

Hello!

Since this is my first posting to the jcr-uk listserv, I wish to extend my
greetings and appreciation to jewishgen and the jgsgb for the opportunity to
try and solve a puzzle which I recently encountered in my genealogical
research.

Before changing his name to FRANKLIN, my father's name was Samuel
NISGORETSKY. While searching the records of the Adat Yisroel Burial Society,
as posted on the website of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Great
Britain, I came across the name Sarah NISGORETSKY. The burial society
records indicate that Sarah NISGORETSKY is interred on the Cheshunt Cemetery
and that she passed away 14 July 1967. The location of the grave is given as
D:5:22. I am anxious to ascertain whether the burial society has any
additional information concerning Sarah NISGORETSKY as I believe she was a
relative. If there are any descendents, I am most anxious to contact them.
If there are no descendents, I would like to obtain as much information
about her as possible to add to the history of the NISGORETSKY family. It is
a large family in the United States. Without knowing if it is feasible, I
wonder if it is possible to obtain a photograph of the grave marker. I will
be responsible for any associated costs.

Please be advised that due to physical disabilities, I am limited in the
things I can do on my own. Your cooperation will therefore be appreciated.
My email add is shepsel@....

Sincerely,
Sherwood Franklin

BARNETT/GOLDSTEIN OPCHITSKY/KUSHNEVICH #unitedkingdom

Ellen Cleary <ellencleary@...>

Names: BARNETT, GOLDSTEIN, OPCHITSKY, KUSHNEVICH

Family legend is that my great grandparents were married in England and came
to New Orleans, Lousiana in 1858.

Joseph Isaac BARNETT was born in Golub, Prussia in 1832. His original
surname was OPCHITSKY. I do not know when he changed his name. I am told
he went to Oxford, married in England and came to New Orleans.

Hannah Pauline GOLDSTEIN was born in Russia Poland in 1840. Her original
surname was KUSHNEVICH. She was living with her aunt (whose name I don't
know) in England (where in England I don't know) when she and Joseph Isaac
Barnett were married.

They sailed >from Liverpool, husband and wife, on January 18, 1858.

My current thinking is that they were in the area of Oxford, England. But I
am not certain of that.

I have researched them >from their sailing >from Liverpool onward. I believe
I have every possible document I can obtain in the US and now I am trying to
see what more I can find of their time in England.

anyone know what an Alitzker is?
Could it refer to a person >from Alytus, Lithuania?

Research in India and Pre 1948 Israel #general

Josh Brown <gettysburg63@...>

Hello:

I am helping my father's cousin with her genealogical research and I was
wondering if anyone could tell me how to research records in India and Pre
1948 Israel. Her is what she has told me:

Her mother's name was Rachel Benjamin, married to Israel (Rubin) Brown.
Rachel Benjamin was the first Jewish doctor in India.
Her father was named Joseph Aaron Benjamin, and he was born in Bombay,
India in the 1800's. Her mother was named Ruth Elias and was born in
Israel in the 1800's. They were married in Calcutta or Bombay on March 14.
They were all considered British subjects.

Does anyone recognize these names or would be able to give me
suggestions as to how I can research this family?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,
Josh Brown

GDUD in Argentina #general

David Priever

Dear Fellow Jewishgenners,

About a month ago I posted a query for the surname GDUD, which comes >from
Lithuania. I received several responses about the origin of the name
which I appreciated very much.

I just located, via a Google search, a gentleman named Gabriel GDUD,
affiliated in 1993 with the University of Argentina in Buenos Aires The
email address provided is obsolete and a search of phone directories in
Argentina gives me only one other GDUD, Juan.

Any ideas or suggestions in locating Gabriel GDUD will be very greatly
appreciated.

Re: the word "recte" #general

David Rothman <drothman1@...>

I believe the term "false" was used for situations
where there was only a religious marriage.
I am guessing that "recte" therefore means that there
was a civil marriage.

Why the name change? #general

marife <marife@...>

My grandmother's daughters all swear that their mother's name was Eta
Milgrom.

However, on Ellis Island she is listed as Mariemlte Milgram. I am
certain she is one and the same person because she was coming to Atlanta,
Georgia to marry my grandfather and Atlanta is where it said she was coming
on the Ship Manifest. Does anybody have any knowledge about this strange
name change? Who should I trust, my aunts or Ellis Island.?

Thanks for your response.

Look up required - 1930 Bronx directory #general

Lehava Falkson

Dear Genners,

Can any one with access to a 1929 or 1930 Bronx directory please look up
G.(Godel) SHINDELMAN or SCHINDELMAN for me? Living in Johannesburg, I have
no access to such sources.

Hopefully, with his address known, I will be able to find him on the 1930
census... I could not find him at the address he had in 1920.

Thanks!

Meeting for Essex and London residents, UK #general

A J <genealicej@...>

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain (JGSGB) East of London
Group is holding a "Tell Us Your Family History" evening at Ilford
Synagogue, 22 Beehive Lane, Gants Hill, Essex on Tuesday, 27th August at
7.45pm.

We'd love to hear your family history and help you with your brick walls!
Don't worry if you have little knowledge of your family's past.
We can help you research your family tree!

Our special guest is JGSGB member, distinguished left-wing journalist and
trade unionist Francis Beckett who will be telling us about the
extraordinary twists and turns of his own family history.

Francis's father, the late John Beckett, was Labour's youngest-ever MP in
1924 but nine years later abandoned parliamentary politics for the British
Union of Fascists. His name became notorious, mentioned in the same breath
as Oswald Mosley and Nazi broadcaster, William Joyce, also known as 'Lord
Haw Haw'. So why has the son of a Blackshirt joined a Jewish genealogy
society? Come along and find out!

All are welcome to meetings of the JGSGB East of London Group. Entry is £1
for members and £2 for non members including refreshments.
