Ellis Island research - FIERMAN #general

Nancy Hauser <nhauser@...>

I just spent a couple of hours, poring over the ships manifest
for the Carmania which came into NY on April 4th, 1906. All 70
pages of it!

My husband's grandmother's (and great-aunt's) application for
citizenship say that they came >from Vilna, Russia out of Antwerp,
Belgium on the ship Carmania, landed in NY April XX, 1906.
Although the Carmania only sailed >from Liverpool, the Cunard web
site mentioned a train >from Antwerp in 1906 - that might explain
that discrepancy.

There are several entries that read ....,.... where I assume
the passenger's name was unreadable, some of which were Hebrew
and Russian, although none say Vilna or Wilna (there are some
people aboard whose town is Wilna). I don't see a woman, about
30, named Katie, traveling with three girls under 10 years old -
Mamie, Lillian, and Rebecca. I was expecting a slightly different
surname >from Fierman - possibly Fireman, but nothing is close.

I need advice! I would very much like to track these people
down, for my mother-in-law, for my husband, and for my daughters.

Thanks,
Nancy

BERNERT in Sheffield, and Hampstead Garden Suburb #unitedkingdom

MBernet@...

I am looking for the family of Joseph (Seppel) BERNERT. He was born in
Nurnberg, Germany, around 1885. His family were hop merchants. He later had
an interest in a plastics (celluloid) and toys factory, and in 1934 he
emigrated to Sheffield.

Evenutally he became a senior director in the Halex corporation (ping-pong
balls, brushes) and moved to London. His home was close to the Golders Green
crematorium. He had, I believe, just one daughter who became an officer in
the ATS in WW2. I assume he died around 1950-60

I saw an announcement yesterday of a recntly published KOVLENOV family
history, written by Dr Nathan Karpil Kovlenov and published by the
author. It is 240 pages and I assume it is in Hebrew. The announcement
gives a Tel-Aviv area phone number for the author and I will hold onto
it for a few days.

I missed the original post about slopsellers but noticed a mention
of it in today's digest. I want to point out that a slopseller is a
person who made uniforms for the British military. I was under the
impression that he sold or collected garbage but recently learned that
is not the case. It's a strange name but that *is* the occupation -
clothing.

French naturalization #general

To explain how to search the French Naturalization Records is a very
difficult matter. I recently wrote a full article about this subject
published in the last issue of the American magazine Heritage Quest.

If you are searching for a Naturalization File between 1900 and 1950,
the research can be done easily thanks to a CD Rom. For the other
periods, the research is more complicated.

If you write me privatly about the naturalized persons you are searching
for, I could tell you more about this subject.

Sincerely,
Laurence Abensur-Hazan (Mrs), Paris, France

Hi Jessie Ann and all who are interested. Rootsweb has a site called
Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. Check your City and State for
Volunteers, most will take the photos at no charge, some ask for you
to re-emburse for expenses. There is one or two people who are willing
to take photos in the Queens Area. I have asked one of the women, her
name is Linda several times to take photos and she does a beautiful
job.

The URL for Random Acts is
