Chaim KAHN from Brest-Litovsk #belarus

Hi
I'm trying to trace information on the family of Chaim KAHN a businessman
from Brest-Litovsk. He was active in the Mizrachi movement and donated money
to Jerusalem (Mekor Chaim is named after him). His son Bendet was the owner
of "Yalkut", a hebrew publishing house, and another son David was the
publisher of Haaretz. I'd like to trace information on his wife, children
and especially a connection to the Rabinowitz, Finkelstein, Rifkin and
Labris families in Brest-Litovsk.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I have no data on Glaser or Gleser nor from
Suvainishok. The only approach I have found for the Yehuda/Yudel is to look
into the patronymics if I have enough data which is rarely the case. This
is one of the reasons I set about setting up my database. I have not
included Yudelson.. in my data because of the volume even though I know
some are probably related.

My dad's DNA came back as Cohanim, and the markers match other names, not
known to us. One of them is LEESON >from Los Altos, who I met last week there.
As far as I am concerned, you have great yichis if you connect with
the LEESONs!

I have a Simon GLASER who had seven children:

1 M: Emanuel GLASER

2 M: Joshua GLASER

3 M: Jacob GLASER

4 M: Isaac GLASER

5 F: Hannah GLASS
Spouse: Abraham "Abe" SPRING

6 F: Beta GLASER

7 F: Esther GLASER

Needless to say, #5 intermarried with my family.

MEYEROWITZ - Boston #general

ijhope <ijhope@...>

I have been searching for some time for my grandfather's three sisters and
have just found out that his niece, Bertha Gop(p) arrived through Ellis
Island May 30, 1917. The shipping manifest states that she was going to her
Aunt, Gutel Meyerowitz of 35 Wall Street, Boston, Mass.

This is the first time that I have "found" one of his three sisters,
although I believe that all three went to Boston. The 6 brothers went to
South Africa and it was only through the ALD that I discovered that there
were also 3 sisters. Their parents (my great grandparents) were Shmuel
Beniamin ben Abram Gop and Sora Rokhel bat Abram David Friedland. I have
had some research done in Vilnuis with amazing success!

Gutel Gop was born in Vilijampole, Kaunas on 29th December 1873. She may
also have had a son Borukh, who was born in Kaunas in 1896, before her
marriage to Mr ? Meyerowitz. I know nothing further about Gutel's family
in Boston, or even when she left Lithuania.

I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction,
perhaps has access to a Boston census 1910 or 1920?

Thanks in advance

Re: Who filled out info for headstones and death certificates? #general

Mark Jacobson

My grandfather was the president of a Drohobycz
Landsmanschaften burial society in New York and I know
that they only issued burial permits for the person to
be buried in the plot. They did not provide any
information about parent's names or anything else for
the stone. I handled this for the society when he
became ill, so I know how it worked for them and other
societies. Father's name and the person's Hebrew name
information is given to the stone maker by the person
who orders and pays for the stone, usually the next of
kin. Since the death certificate is prepared
immediately after the person's death, their close
relative might be upset and not remember the person's
father's name. After weeks or months they go to the
stonemaker to prepare the stone and they have a clear
mind or they had the opportunity to look up the
information or ask someone else in the family. I know
when I gave the information to the stone maker for my
grandparents they did not ask me for proof of the
names and accepted what I said. All they did is made
sure it was a correct Hebrew name and they spelled it
in Hebrew and gave me a diagram of how it would look
before they carved it.
