Ukmerge Shtetl list #lithuania

ourabey@...

I have the list of shtetls in the Ukmerge (Vilkomer) area. Are all the
possible towns and villages in the Vilkomir area on that list? I am
trying to locate my family through a process of elimination. I know that
they were >from the Vilkomir area and I doubt that they were >from the
city.

My uncle when in his 90s told me that the town was called Prude or
Pude, but his memory may have been incorrect since he left there when he
was 6, and I have not found any town even remotely near that name nor any
person who could identify that town. Unfortunately there are no elders
of my family left to ask. The naturalization papers of the members of my
family all state they were born in and came >from Vilkomir.

Any suggestion would be most welcome.
Thank you in advance.

I've been unable to determine what communities they are referring
to using Shtetl Seeker. Does anyone recognize these shtetls? Also,
when my GG Aunt and her father arrived in 1904 (at Ellis Island),
they listed Akrnauschken, Germany as their last place of residence.
Does anyone recognize this location?
Dear Monica:

may have information that will help, assuming that your Hedecruk is
actually Heydekrug. As for Leipzig, could they have meant Liepa? The
Leipzig I know is far to the west.

Help in getting started #ukraine

TaxTroll@...

Hi everyone. I'm new to the SIG and would appreciate any advice on
getting started in my Ukranian research. The surnames I'm researching
right now are LUTSKY and KANTROWITZ/KANTOROWITZ. Per my gg-grandfather's
US naturalization papers, the family emigrated >from Kiev ca. 1905-6 (don't
know if that refers to the city or gubernia). The LUTSKY name isn't very
common in the US so my US research has been fairly easy but now I have to
deal with a foreign language that I know nothing of. I do have Miriam
Weiner's Jewish Roots book for the Ukraine but it's a little bit of
overload right now.

Thanks for any help

There are many more helpful websites listed on both of them. And I am
sure our fellow Genners will send you even more info!

Brazilian Ambassador Sousa DANTAS #germany

ystern@...

I'm searching for passports of Jewish emigrants who left Marseille in
1940-1941, containing visas issued by the Brazilian Ambassador Luiz
Martins de Souza DANTAS.

Most of the emigrants came to Brazil, but many others used the visas
to get to other countries, mostly to the USA.

Fabio Koifman, a History Professor >from Rio de Janeiro, recently published
a very interesting book about the life of the Brazilian Ambassador
Luiz Martins de Souza DANTAS, who served in France during the Holocaust.

DANTAS issued visas to hundreds of Jews in occupied France after the Nazi
takeover in 1940. He did this against strict orders >from the pro-fascist
Brazilian government headed by Getulio Vargas and at great risk to his
diplomatic career.

Several of the Jews who arrived in Brazil were detained by the Brazilian
government but were released later on. DANTAS was among the diplomats
sent to Germany by the Nazis in 1942. He spent 14 months interned in Bad
Godesberg.

These facts, still not very well known in Brazil, are focused on by
Koifman's book, which will certainly contribute to the acknowledgement
process of Souza DANTAS (as a Righteous Gentile) by Yad Vashem.

I would appreciate assistance in identifying the place name on Viewmate;

that the first letter is an "L"? Please reply privately. Thank you!

Perhaps information on the above subject has already been

The site lists the Foundation publications now available for

Dear Mr. Freedman:
Sorry to have to use JewishGen to seek a personal contact
but I know Mr. Freedman is known to many "genners" he helped
who seek info about Leeds residents.

A young gent named Jason Cain, is anxious to obtain some
information regarding Leeds relatives named Blackstone.
Unfortunately, the URL I have for him has expired so if any
readers are aware of his current URL, would you kindly email
me, I would gladly forward same to Jason, after obtaining Mr.
Freedman's permission. As an old friend, I would also like to
renew our acquaintance since having orignally been introduced

Freedman, I hope this message reaches you in good health.
