My Shtetele Belz #galicia

Stanley Baron <stanbaron04@...>

I am also seeking surviving vital records (births, marriages,
deaths) for Belz, particularly in the period 1800 to 1850 and
for property ownership in the period >from 1860 to 1910, and
would be interested in any guidance that could be provided.

I thank the moderator for adding the note explaining the
abbreviation "RTR". I was unaware of the existence of Miriam
Weiner's Routes to Roots Foundation,
http://www.rtrfoundation.org/.

Researching: JAKTER, STRAHLBERG, STANGER, LOCHNER and
GAYNOR >from Belz. (My grandfather’s name was changed to
Gaynor when he arrived in America. He passed when my mother
was a child so I have no information on his family -except his
father’s name was Shmuel and he owned a tavern and a mill in
Belz, circa 1850-1910.)

Thank you,
Stan Baron

Belz #galicia

Suzan Wynne <srwynne@...>

Belz was an administrative center in the Sokal kehilla (or
Judische Kultus Gemeinde) which means that Jewish vital
records were collected and maintained by the Jewish registrar
there in Belz. The Sokal district included other subdistricts
such as: Krystynopol, Tartakow, Warcz/Warez and Sokal, itself,
employed a registrar for the towns of Baranie Pertoki,
Josefowka, Steniatyn, Wojslawice, and Zawisznia. There were
some surviving Sokal subdistrict vital records. They have
been indexed as part of the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland
project. To date, I do not know of any surviving records for
the Belz sub-district.

If there were surviving kehilla records, they probably remained
in Belz when the area came under Soviet-dominated Ukraine
after WWII.

Max COHEN San Francisco 1870's 1880's #general

Ian Charold Herriott <ianherriott@...>

I'm interested in connecting with researchers on or descendants of Max COHEN who
lived in San Francisco >from the 1870's.

He worked with my ggg-grandfather Richard ALBRECHT in a bakery in SF for at least
ten years. The 1870 Census lists him as Max COHN [sic] in the ALBRECHT household:
22 years old, "works in bakery", and origin Prussia. My ggg-grandfather and mother
were >from Saxony. The 1880 census list Mr. COHEN [sic] as a "boarder" and "workman
in bakery" and origin as Germany (same for all household). It is my assumption that
this person is Jewish. I don't know the incidence of COHEN surname among people
from Prussia who were not Jewish. Please advise.
In sum I would like to learn more about this person and contact living descendants.
There is another servant, Kate KNAPKE listed on the 1880 census as well. There is
an apocryphal family story with exceedingly vague outlines, that this servant was
Christian and helped convert my ggg-grandparents to Christianity, though I have no
knowledge of what faith or denomination they belonged to prior to that.

Thank you for any advice or leads.
