A city in Ukraine: Zetoma? #general

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

I have come across a city in Ukraine that I cannot identify. It looks like
Zetoma to me: but where is this? Here is the 1900 passenger list of Jacob
Oberman, my great great uncle, showing this city:

Can anyone help me read this town name?

Dan

P.S. I had expected the passenger list to show that he lived in the area
of Zaslaw, Ukraine:

Conference proposal - German translation volunteers #germany

Jerry Zeisler <jzeisler@...>

I will be at the Washington Conference.

Has anyone discussed a requirement for document translators at the
conference? I would think that there would be a need to translate from
at least German to English. Maybe a volunteer opportunity for some folks?

Smiths from Chicago, possibly Canada #general

Ruth Hyman <ruth.hyman@...>

Dear genners,
I am trying in vain to find out about two SMITH families.
(1) Israel (Sroel/Shroll)SMITH (peddlar and jack of all trades) married
Elke BERNSTEIN >from Lithuania (probably Zagare). They would have been
born approx. 1870-1880. Their children were Rose, Louis, Edward, Jack,
Sam, Bernard. This family is pretty definitely >from Chicago.

(2) Ritsa BERNSTEIN/BOHRSTEIN married ? SMITH (they would have been born
about 1850) and their progeny were Sophia, Lena, Ben (an electrical
engineer), and Willie. Ritsa was the sister of my great grandfather,
Shmerl BERNSTEIN/BOHRSTEIN >from Zagare, Lithuania.

I hope someone recognizes these people!
Thanks,

Ruth Hyman

Re: Cantonist Decree & Augustow Province #general

M. Ronn

Dear JewishGeners:

"Encylcopedia Judaica" states that the cantonist laws did not apply to the
Kingdom of Poland. My understanding is that the Kingdom of Poland at the
time the decree was enacted in 1827 included Augustow province (which was
split after the Polish uprising in the 1850s to two provinces, Augustow
and Suwalki). I would be interested if anyone knows of any historical
information (no family traditions please) regarding whether cantonists
recruits were taken >from the Augustow province (which included the area of
Suwalki). Since I have already looked at quite a number of sources
regarding this topic, I would greatly appreciate your not refering me to
general books on this subject matter unless you can provide a page number
regarding the specific information that I seek.

Please respond to my personal e-mail (in addition to the group).

Thank you,

Re: Pronunciation of Jetta? #general

Herb <herbiem@...>

The pronounced is Yetta. This is a common name for Jewish women. In
Hungary and other countries the J is pronounced as a Y. Many Yettas are
called Ethel in the U.S., but any name could be selected.including Ida.

My g-g-g'father's sister was named Jetta according to her birth
certificate, but she is enumerated in the 1880 census as Ida. I was
wondering if possibly the census taker misunderstood Jetta as "Ida" or
if Ida was a "nickname" of sorts. I have no idea how Jetta is pronounced.
