Age at birth #ukraine

C.J. MILLMAN <gedalia@...>

Dear List:

Going over some of my ancestor's vital statistics, it appeared that one of
my ancestors in Russia gave birth at the age of 13. I'm not completely
convinced that all the dates relied on by me were entirely accurate. Out of
curiosity, however, I wonder if others have ever encountered such a young
age at birth, and whether at all it was common?

Re: S.I. and "admitted" #ukraine

Hilary Henkin <hilary@...>

Just a reminder - "admitted" didn't mean you were allowed into the
country. It meant you were admitted to the hospital, a meaning still used
the same way today. So in the below instance, the relatives were admitted
to the infirmary, THEN held for six days.

ALTMAN from KOVNO/KAUNAS #lithuania

ijhope <ijhope@...>

I am searching for any information on the following family who are listed in the Family list for Kaunas in 1874:

Yankel Altman - wife Dobrusha
Sons - David, Iudel, Mikhel
Daughters - Gitel, Sora

I believe that this family is my grandmother's parents and siblings. Her
name - Fruma Malka Altman - and she was born in 1875, which explains why she wasn't in this family list.

Her marriage record to my grandfather, Girsh Gop, in 1895 >from the Kaunas
Archives lists her father as Kovno towndweller Yankel Altman.

Thanks in advance.

RE : How can I find info on relative who lived in Paris before the war? #general

Stephane Toublanc <toublanc@...>

Leslie Weinberg asks

<< My grandfather had a sister who lived in Paris who he visited before
he came to the U.S. in 1913. Her name was Ruchel (Rachel?)EISEN and her0
father was Chaim Eisen who lived in Tyczyn during those years. She never
married. We do not know the mother's name since we believe Ruchel was
from a first marriage. I would like to find some record which might
have information about her, posibly her birth date and parents' names.
We believe she died during the Holocaust. >>

Hello

If you know some address, names of relatives or friends with whom she
lived, may be a possibility to find her name in census of 1926, 1931 and
1936, availed on microfilm at the "Archives de Paris".
If she died during the Shoah, she is registered in the book of Serge
Klarsfeld, "Memorial de la deportation des Juifs de France". And may be,
we can find also, a card for her, in the "fichiers Juifs", availed on
microfilm in the State Archives.

Looking for photo - TACHNA family website #general

Cory Streisinger <corys@...>

Several weeks ago I found a web site containing a photo of the gravestone
of my ancestor Jacob Meshullam ORNSTEIN in the Lviv (Lemberg, Lwow)
cemetery.
The photo was on the "Tachna family website," formerly at www.tachna.com.
However, that web site is no longer in operation and unfortunately I had
not printed the photo. I would like to get in touch with anyone who is
familiar with the Tachna family or their web site, to see whether I can
get a copy of the photo. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Re: 1920 US Census success, finally! #general

Adelle Gloger

Schelly Dardashti wrote about using both exact spelling and the soundex
when searching on the online census website.

Remember that you can also do a search with first name only and filling in
other info such as birthplace and/or age. It works especially if the first
name is not real common.

When working with the census, remember to use both exact and soundex
searches. Also plug in birthplace. There were too many pages to check in
my first soundex search, I added Russia as birthplace and instead of
hundreds and hundreds of records in a soundex search, there were only 5
records to look at, a much easier number to handle.
