Detanee - Ellis Island #general

Solkeys <solkeys@...>

I located a name of 13 girl that came on Aug 10,1897 her name is Maria
Jozafovic. It is very possible that this is the person I am searching.
There is an X next to her name, and I was told that it means that she was
most probably detained. I was wondering if there is any information or
records available of those people that were detained?

Fw: Found Marriage Records - Brooklyn NY 1940's #general

Billie Stein <billie@...>

Dear Genners,

My uncle was a pulpit Rabbi in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn (NY) in
the 1940's and later. He died in 1966 in Israel, and his widow, my aunt,
died last month. We are in the process of clearing the house, and came
across detailed records of at least some of the marriages he performed. I
haven't gone through everything yet, but have seen records for 1946 and
1947. There are also copies of divorces ("get").

What do I do with these records??? They belong in some archive, but where?
I'm writing >from Israel, so if the answer is somewhere in the US, I'll have
to figure out how to get them there, but that's a separate problem.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Please respond privately.

Vivian is right that the Hebrew equivalent of Maria
would be Miriam, but Hungarain Jews often had Hebrew
names which had nothing to do with their secular
names. My father's secular name was Laszlo, his
Hebrew name Yossef, my mother's secular name was
Julianna Judit, her Hebrew (or rather Yiddish) name
was Gittel.

Incidentally Maria seems to have been quite a common
name among Hungarian Jews, which is a little
surprising.

Another phenomenon among Hungarian Jews that I have
noticed through looking at vital records and the 1848
census, which I am helping to transcribe, is that
children were occasionally named after their parents
who were still alive, something which is normally
taboo among Ashkenazi Jews.

might have the Hebrew name of Miryam. I have a

Help needed - searching for LANDAU sisters (deceased) information #general

Liz Halevy-Berger

Help!

I am desparate for any information about three LANDAU
sisters, born in Kamionka, Poland, and living their
latter years in the south of France.

Parents were Ludwic and Rosa (nee WALKENBERG) LANDAU.

One of the sisters was Helena BORZYKOWSKI (nee
LANDAU), born 20/08/1887 died 25/11/1952 in Cannes,
France.

The other two (older) sisters were Emilie and Theodora
LANDAU (never married), last known place of residence
- St. Raphael in the Alpes Maritimes and Var area.

I have been unable to find any record of their deaths
or place of burial. Any help or suggestions of how I
can locate this information would be greatly
appreciated.

A geneologist >from the area has searched and come up
with nothing for the two older sisters.

Many thanks

I am researching my GGrandfather Nathan Schereschewsky of Tauroggen. He
died in approximately 1880 and was related somehow to Samuel Isaac

appreciated.

Zalman Leyzer #lithuania

Michael/Rhonda Grosman <mgrosman@...>

After studying the latest file (Pandelys-1899-1914-DL) that I received
from Linda Cantor (thank you, Linda), I believe that the mystery of my
grandfather's "unknown brother" has been solved. His name is listed as
Zalman Kres (father listed as Zalman Leyzer Kres, possibly a cantor) and
it is believed that he may have left Lithuania around 1907 and emigrated
to S. Africa (either Cape Town or Johannesburg). It is also possible
that Zalman Kres left S. Africa (date unknown) and emigrated to
Louisianna where he married Lily Kress and had a daughter, Louise (in
1917?).

If this name or information sounds familiar to anyone, I would greatly
appreciate hearing >from you. Thank you.
