JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Pittsburgh Jewish cemetery project Thank you !
#general
Connie Fisher Newhan
I want to thank fellow genner Robert and the efforts of the Pittsburgh
Jewish Cemetery Project for finding and sending me images of tombstones belonging to several family members buried at West View Cemetery in Pittsburgh. I had tried twice to deal directly with West View to 'purchase' these photos. Both times I was told they would be in the mail within days! Needless to say, I never received the photos. A while back I noticed a posting about the Pittsburgh Jewish cemetery project and wrote to Robert. Yesterday, he emailed me images of all the headstones. Robert is a volunteer for the Pittsburgh Jewish cemetery project and tells me he and his wife have recorded about 3000 to 4000 tombstones in the last two years. They have more than 20,000 more tombstones to do in Pittsburgh and there are only four field volunteers for the project. (They also need data entry clerks). If anyone is interested in volunteer information, please email me and I will forward your note on to Robert. Robert's generousity reminded me that I needed to renew my Jewish Gen contribution, which I just did. I have received so much help >from this fabulous group, it seemed like a small way to say thanks. Keep the projects going and the research coming! Re: Can external ears serve as a genetic linkage?
#general
Mervyn Fox <amfox@...>
Both ear creases and configuration, and finger prints, reflect
intra-uterine pressures and experiences and are not genetic in the sense of inherited. Rarely identical twins may have mirror image finger prints and possibly ear folds etc although that would depend on the topographical relationship between the two fetuses during the pregnancy. Both may well be unique. Hand and foot prints are shared by twins and are of course used in medical dysmorphology to identify variosu types of syndrome or abnormality, e.g Down syndrome. Also there may be some change in ear creases, proportions &c with age but the general pattern probably remains unique. Dysmorphology textbooks provide variosu measures of specific parts of the ear lobe which could be used to characterise an individual, but one would have to photograph them in a standard way. In sum, they do not "run in families" unless someother gentic condition influencing the ears is present. Mervyn Fox amfox@usa.net

Help in Strasbourg, Please
#general
Painter <painter@...>
Dear Genners,
In April I was able to spend a few hours in Strasbourg where I was able to obtain a few Civil Census records. However it looks like I have missed a page. I have both called and written several times - even enclosed a few dollars for postage, etc - but have gotten but one response saying that they do not do genealogy research but can access civil records. Well no records have appeared as of yet. Is there someone willing to go the the Archives for me(I think it was rue L'hospital) and find me the missing page? If so, please write me privately and I will supply the names and what I have already gathered. Thanking all in advance, Debby Gincig Painter Michigan, USA searching: Klinger - Dortmund, Strasbourg (now also Lodz) Lustig - Nowy Sacz Gincig - Germany or Poland Shtokhammer/Stockhammer - Austria

Looking for Address of San Francisco Committee For Service To Emigres
#general
Uri Jakubovic
Aug. 30, 2003
My late uncle Tibor JAKUBOVIC (>from Revuca, Slovakia) received a letter from February 27, 1940 >from ***San Francisco Committee For Service ToEmigres***. It said that committee cannot sign the necessary affidavits of support and cannot find anyone willing to sign for a non-relative. Two or three years later my uncle perished in the Holocaust. I wonder if this "San Francisco Committee For Service To Emigres" still exists. If so, what is its current postal address or e-mail address? I would like to try to locate my uncle's letter to that Commitee. By the way, the address of that Committee in 1940 was 1600 Scott Street, San Francisco. Thank you very much. Uri Jakubovic Hadera, Israel

Annie-France Aufrychter
Dear Genners,
An "aufrichter",in current German ,is a setting up machine; I can imagine that it was the occupation of somebody building or setting up something . But I wonder if it couldn't also relate to some religious rite ? -(In any case,I'm incredibly proud of my surname!)- For your possible answer, many thanks in advance... Dear Genners,
My grandfather Ben ROSENTHAL was naturalized in Canada in 1920. His son Adolph is listed on the back of the certificate (and in the National Archives of Canada naturalizations list)as a minor child. Did wives obtain derivative citizenship in Canada when there husbands were naturalized? My grandmother's name is on my grandfather's certificate as his wife, but she does not appear in the Archive list of naturalizations. Did she have to apply separately?
