Bulawayo Synagogue continued #southafrica

Saul Issroff <shaul@...>

Update: As you all know by now, tragedy struck the Bulawayo Hebrew
Congregation on Sabbath when our lovely old Shul burnt down.

In the aftermath we managed to hold services at the Sinai Hall in Kumalo --
and it looked really terrific. The hall was cleaned and scrubbed. Chairs
ferried over >from the school, and old Bimah resurrected, an Ark found from
the old Guild Hall and beautiful ornate clothes donated in the 1960s by the
Goldwasser family put to excellent use. Rodney Lepar, Brian Sher and David
Lasker under the watchful eye of self-made carpenter Alec Lewin, managed to
jimmy a pole to the top of the old Ark >from whch to hang the heavy curtain.

Thank G-d we were able to save all our Torahs. Some of them were used during
Yom Kippur. Johannesburg responded magnificently by sending us some
Artscroll books which came in very handy as many of us had lost our sidurim
in the fire. We hadn't expected the building to go up in flames, so we had
left them there in anticipation of the forthcoming Holiday.

More tragic was the loss of many talisim and tfilim as the men naturally
leave them there most of the time. Fortunately, Johannesburg again responded
and, in the nick of time, managed to get a box of vital items to the airport
just as some poor sorry soul was about to board the plane. He didn't know
what hit him when one of the Johannesburg Jewry thrust a box of items into
unsuspecting hands and begged him to see that they got to our "new" shul.
Many thanks Joburg.

In the meantime we've had a wonderful response >from people all over the
world. I will relay some of their messages below.
At the start of the service the Rabbi responded in true pioneer spirit
reminding us that only good can come of this tragedy. He noted that it's not
only new year resolutions that count, but actions as well. Well --- our
community's actions, led by Rodney Lepar and Raymond Roth, spoke for
themselves. We had a wonderful, spiritual and unified service.

At the end of it all, there was a light moment. We had lost our Shofar in
the blaze as well. The Rabbi, bless him, tried puffing away on Benji Lasker'
s "toy" shofar, brought along "just in case". He didn't have much luck.
Benji gave it a bash. Nothing doing. Once again into the breach stepped the
ever-modest Rodney. Out of that shofar came notes so sweet, we forgot our
sorrow and cried out in joy. Thank you Rodney. I know your dad, bless his
memory, was doing a jig and passing out sweets Up above.

To other business: I am trying to put together an emailing list of all those
people who would like to help us in cash and kind.

Anything you can offer would be most gratefully and graciously accepted. We
have lost just about everything. The building itself, its interior and many
religious items, mezzuzas, talisim, books (all sorts), photos, and memories.

In anticipation of all your good wishes, I intend to try to reconstruct our
1994 magazine as many of the stories are still on diskette. I will attempt
to send these out as time allows.

I also hope to keep you all informed about our progress - how we are
managing in these trying times.

However, in order to do this, I need to construct a comprehensive emailing
and address list. Would any and all of you who wish to have your details
added to this Alumni Association (of sorts) please send me, as urgently as
possible, details of

Your name

Postal Address

Home and work phones

Cell phones (if you have - this would be great to get off urgent sms's
should the need arise)

Obviously, your email address

And any details you wish to include about yourself, your family, your
history and connection to the Bulawayo Hebrew Congregation - all sorts,
reform, orthodox and even Bohemian.

Would you also please contact those you know of, who do NOT have email
addresses, and get me their details. We'd like to some how make arrangements
to have hardcopy sent to them.

Volunteers needed: I would also like to make a call to any of you out there
who would like to help me with this undertaking. Jenny Bernstein in Joburg
has already offered. She can be reached on jennybyo@yahoo.co.uk

It will be hard work, I suspect, and I would like some people to volunteer
to assist in the compilation of this list.
E-Zine and Website: More importantly, if this works, I like to get an E-zine
(Email magazine) going with updates and information for all. Best of all
would be if we could get our own WEBSITE up and running. I do not have the
ability to do it >from here, so if anyone has any suggestions (perhaps
linking it to an existing website) I would truly appreciate your assistance.

To all of you who do not have the ability to download pictures and large
quantities of text, let me know so that I can put on a separate mailing list
to make downloads easier.

Finally, if you have family or friends nearby who do not have email, please
try to print out a copy of this letter and any others that may come and pass
them around.

Out of this enormous tragedy, something truly wonderful may come - a
re-connection with all who have left, but who are still with us in hearts
and minds.

G-d bless, have a good Year and lets hear >from you.

I am looking for the offspring of these members of my wife's family.

Hirsh and Taube Bloch were >from Sudargas, Lithuania, but their children were
probably born in East Prussia. Some of the places where the family lived

lived in Shanghai, and one emigrated to the United States.

Two family legends attach to these branches. One is about a powerful

I must be slipping! While I was preparing my Oct.8,03
response to Eleanor Lind's Oct.7,03 inquiry about
"Vyzuonos," I forgot to suggest that she use the
"search this website box" at Jewishgen's main page,
and type in "Vizhon". If she does that she can pull
up some memories of villages near Vizhon. mention
Vizhon.

A more important lapse was my forgetting to consult my
copy of Nancy Shoenburg and Stuart Schoneberg's
"Lithuanian Jewish Communities." If I had had a
look in this book , I could have told Ms.Lind that
there is a little more than a page and a half of
information about her ancestral town, one of the
first Jewish communities in Lithuania. The Schoenburgs
also offer a number of names >from the Rabbinate,
and note that a Chaim Hanoch Polovin owned the
town's winery and the Vizhon was the native town of a
poetess named Zelda Kniznik, and of a
writer and teacher named Joseph Mezel.

Her mother, is listed on the passenger sheets as Mindel

Dear Genners,

I am searching for information about a Marjem Hubert and

on Ellis Island passenger list). Marjem was 18 and
Riwke was not yet one year old when they arrived in NY
on July 23, 1912 aboard the Ryndam >from Rotterdam.
Their residence had been Lodz.

Marjem listed her husband, Jakop (Jacob) Hubert in New

Riwke would now be about 91 or 92. If anyone has

are now available online at central databank of the
German Federal Archive in Berlin. These files
were gathered information >from almost 300 archives in

The databank, which is in German, can be accessed
by relatives of victims of euthanasia and historians.
However, the names of victims are not listed.
The central databank of the German Federal Archives is at

I don't read German so I cannot say how usefully this
