Dear Naomi and dear Group,

About genealogical researches in Italy:
I wrote an "How-to" file for the JewishGen and it will be soon on-line on
the webpage at www.jewishgen.org.
For the moment I can say as usual: to begin your research you have to keep
in mind Who, Where, and When.
You have a surname, you have to identify a town and a province. Then you
can find the addresses of the 1) townhall, 2) the archives, and 3) the
Jewish community.
Each of these institution have different archives with different records.
If you need punctual advices, please write me.

Could someone please provide a translation (and any other insight you may
have) for "Achim Misode Lovin." I believe it is a burial society.

Thank you.

Alright.
I got it already.
Mt. Hebron Cemetery is not in Manhasset, it is in Flushing!
Many thanks to those who set me straight, and a please don't to those who
are about to!

And no, it was not a stressful Thanksgiving dinner escapade. < g >

Legitinate or illegitimate child #general

lilian schorr <lilianschorr@...>

Dear Genners,
On the birth record of my aunt Serl Race MISCHEL dated 1894, the is a note
stating: "following instructions >from Stanislawow dated 7/3/1930, and the
recommendation of the office >from Stryj >from April 8, 1930, it is noted
that the child is of intramarital origin....."

My question is:
1) Why was this note written in 1930 on the Birth Record dated 1894?
2) Was it because my aunt needed to obtain the Passport and therefore
as my grandfather was dead by 1930 a civil marriage could not take place
and therefore she could not legitimate her birth?
Would appreciate any comments that would help me understand this.

Thank you in advance,

Lilian Schorr

New York School Principal #general

My mother-in-law had a cousin named May BAUM who, we understand, was some
sort of school principal in New York. I would guess that if living, May
would be in her high eighties at least. She had a sister Lillian, both
unmarried.

Does anyone have any suggestions how to find anything on these women? I
am particularly interested in their father's name, so that we can enter
them properly in our family chart.

Carlsbad burial #general

Israel P <isai8v10@...>

A few years ago, one of the PIKHOLZ descendants was in the cemetery at
Carlsbad and happened across the grave of Sofie(Zissel) PICKHOLZ. The
only other information on the stone is that she was born in Poland, died
19 July 1928 and is called "woman."

(See the stone at http://pikholz.org/Cemetery/Sofie_Cz.htm .)

The presence of a decent quality stone indicates that there was some
family.

I assume that she was in Carlsbad temporarily, rather than having been a
long-term resident.

I have written to several different addresses in Carlsbad, as provided by
the IAJGS website, but have never has a reply >from anyone.

Can someone give me a suggestion how I might learn who this woman was?
