Re: Litvak relatives from late 18th & early - mid 19th C. #lithuania

Gerald Gaffin <shirl_geg@...>

I am researching the antecedents of Yaacov Dovid Berman, who migrated >from
Zagare, to the Manchester area of England, around 1890. He was born about
1848, died 1931; his first wife was Kayle Rochel Leib, who was born around
1853 and died in the UK in 1917, but there was also, apparently, a second
wife [ Fanny ] - on whom there is little or no data.

Yaacov Dovid, a Talmudic scholar,was the son of Moshe Berman/ Behrman ;
Hebrew - Bet, Ayin, Raish, Mem, Aleph, Nun - according to his tombstone . To
date, I have been unable to trace Moshe or any other possible antecedents
of Y.D. Berman, who was my GGF, and I would appreciate input
from other LitvakSIG members.
Dr Gerald S. Gaffin JGFF # 61823

Also researching : CHAZAN [Telz] ; ITSICOVICH & LEIB [ Zagare] ;
GAFFIN(OVICH) [ Kupiskis / Skapiskis / Panevesys ] and similar sounding
surnames.

PLEASE reply to : < shirl_geg@... >

In my posting announcing the the Radoshkivich 1850 Revision List, I
indicated that Revision Lists prior to 1834 were in the Minsk archive.
Actually, pre-1834 Revision Lists for the Vileika uyezd are in BOTH the
Vilna and Minsk archive according to the Roots to Roots website. Sorry for
any confusion this may have caused.

Re: jcr-uk digest: January 30, 2004 #unitedkingdom

I am glad naturalisations are finally going on-line, in some searchable
format, anyway.

However, I noticed a few years ago that before Kew computerised their
records there were many paper records of naturalisations not included in the
Index (at least for the period I was interested in roughly 1890 to 1905 ).
The Index is very, very old and unreliable. I used to go into Kew and use an
Index for one person as a starting point for finding others in the paper
book (actual certificates). For example, I found the ancestor of my
cousin's husband but he appears nowhere in the Index. I found this to be the
same for other people.

I tried writing to Kew about this but got evasive answers - either there
were no plans for going through the paper certificates and digitising or
indexing them (too expensive and time consuming) or you got a prepared
answer that had nothing to do with the question posed.

I wonder if someone >from JGSGB could discuss with Kew the possibility of
actually going through all the paper certificates of naturalisation,
digitising them and indexing them >from scatch. That way we will have proper
records with nothing missing.

The old Indexes are simply too poor to use or rely on.I am lacking
naturalisation for Nathan Abrahams or his son Abraham in Manchester despite
searching indexes (and yes, I know some did not get naturalised and Abrahams
is a common name!). I feel there is a lot hidden in Kew because of the poor
indexes.

I will be interested to hear the outcome.
