VM 3668-9: Gorodische or Gorodeya or Gorodnya-Russian Translation help #general

MikeFamHistorian@...

I have trying to solve the puzzle of the origin of my wife's family for a few
years. I now have two records >from Novogrudok uzeyd posted on Viewmate 2
records:

1. VM 3669 1834 Revision list header

2. VM 3669 1850 Revision list header

I would like sometime to identify which town the record is from. So far I
have three candidates but no concensus yet. It would be great to match the name
in the record with a Russina map. The three candidates are:

A. Gorodische (Haradzysca) (About 30 kilometers west of Gorodeya, between
Baranavici & Navagrudok)

B. Gorodeya (Haradzeja) (94 kilometers SW of Minsk, between Minsk &
Baranavici)

C. Gorodnya (?)

Kossow - History of Jews in Bukowina #poland

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Marilyn COSSEVER asks about the family name KOSSOWER.

There are a number of references to KOSSOW and an alternative spelling KOSOW
as well as the descriptive form:"Kossower" in the section on "The Wiznitzer
Tzadikim Dynasty", History of Jews in Bukowina [Pages 89 - 90] edited by
Hugo Gold. The English translation is available on the internet.

http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Bukowinabook/buk1_089.html

A google search reveals far more KOSOWER than KOSSOWER references, but this
may be not be significant.

You will also find variants KOSSOVER and KOSOVER. COSSEVER is the loser in
this Google citation race.

Re: Gilene, Poland possibilities??? #poland

Fbussgang@...

<< Subject: Gilene, Poland possibilities??? >>

It is possible that it was Zychlin (Z has a dot over it), pronounced
Zhikhleen. It is near Kutno and not that far >from Raciaz.

At any rate, it is probably a town that begins with "Z with a dot over it"
which sounds like "Zh."

researching: KORN and DZIEDZIC from Przasnysz #poland

Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>

I'm looking for information on a KORN family >from Przasnysz.

Szyia KORN married Ester Laia DZIEDZIC in 1893 who died in 1898.
He then married Chawa Basia DZIEDZIC (not sure if she was a cousin or sister
to Ester Laia) in 1899. JRI-Poland records show a Chaia Mindla KORN
and a Szlama KORN were both born in 1897.

Chawa Basia's parents were Zurek and Bajla Ruchla (nee BORENSTEJN) DZIEDZIC.
Chawa Basia's brother Josek DZIEDZIC was the husband of Szajna ZYLBERMAN,
my great-grandmother's sister.

If this sounds familiar, please contact me privately at

And a lot of the Russian Jews named Vladimir are also Ze'ev, Velvl.
The Russian name for a relative named Wolf (b.1885 in Kremenchug, present
Ukraine) was Vladimir - and he was called Volodia. I am off line while
writing and should check Prof. Esterson's Given Names Data Base for other
variants and endearments...

Westchester School 1910 and WEISBERG #general

David Harris <dorsharris@...>

Herman WEISBERG (1900 - 1985) was born in Brooklyn, the son of Simon and
Eva WEISBERG. Simon and Eva both came >from Romania. The family appears in
the 1910 Census in Brooklyn living with Eva's parents (Moses and Malke
HOROWITZ), but are missing as a family unit in the 1910 Census.

The 1910 Census has a Simon WEISBERG, widower, age 33 born in Romania,
living with friends in Manhattan.

The same 1910 Census has Herman WEISBERG, age 10, listed as a Scholar with
14 other scholars at a private school on Harrison Ave. in Harrison
Township, Westchester County. An additional scholar is a Leon WEISBERG, age 8.

In the 1920 Census, Herman, age 19, and Leon WEISBERG, age 17, are boarders
in an apartment in the Bronx.

I'm "assuming" that Eva died, Simon couldn't care for the children and sent
them to a boarding school.
Does anybody know of such a school on Harrison Avenue (no number given in
the census). It's too difficult to make out the name of the head of the
school on the census form.
Naturally, if anybody knows of either Leon or Herman Weisberg, please
contact me directly at the email address below. Thanks.

The Arenda System Research Project #general

Alan Weiser <alanboy@...>

Because the arenda system(a system of leasing) significantly affected
the socioeconomic life of Jews in Polish and Lithuanian frontier lands
from about the 14th century, the Kolomea Research Group (KRG) has
commenced The Arenda Research Project (TARP). The objectives of TARP
are to:
1. Describe the arenda system
2. Identify arendars (one who purchased a lease)
3. Identify what lands, industrial activities, and service
establishments were covered by arendas.
4. Identify the terms and conditions of arendas
5. Describe the socioeconomic impacts >from arendas
6. Provide clues to determine if one's ancestors may have been
arendars.

A report of initial research has been posted at
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/kolomea/kolomad.htm, click on
Arenda under History in the subject index to reach the report.
Research is continuing and needs volunteer researchers especially some
with Polish, Lithuanian, and Ukrainian language skills with English.
See the noted report for details on the project and contact
information. You do not have to be a member of KRG to participate in
this important project.
