Mt Ararat Stone Photo #general

Carol Jaffe <cmjaffe@...>

Clear DayGenners,

If anyone is in the area of Mt Ararat Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY I would
appreciate a photograph of my aunt & uncle's stone.
They were Thelma STEMPLE 3 March 1914 - 14 August 1972 & Benjamin STEMPLE
1911 - 19 July 1968, Section 58, Range A, Lot 10.

Many thanks in advance,

Carol M Jaffe, Oldsmar, FL

Henriette LANBER #general

Carol Jaffe <cmjaffe@...>

I am aware that my grgrgrandfather Simon BEAR 1818-1889 was married
before he married my grgrgrandmother Caroline KLINE 1831-1911. He could have
been married twice before but I'm not sure. His oldest daughter Rachel BAER
was born in 1855 and her mother was Henriette LANBER, as her name appears on
Rachel's marriage certificate. The next BAER child born was in 1859 and that
was my grgrandmother Delia BAER and 9 more children followed with their
mother being Caroline.

I cannot locate Henriette LANBER anywhere. I have checked Ancestry.com,
Family Search & GenealogyBank.com and nothing comes up. I do know there is
another child Amelia BAER but she is not a child of Caroline, she could be
from Henriette but I don't know.
I'd appreciate any ideas on how to find something on Henriette LANBER, she's
worse than any of my other brick walls.

Thanks in advance,
Carol M Jaffe, Oldsmar, FL

Willy Rosen's cabaret revue troupe "Die Prominenten": Do you recognize any of the ladies in this photo? #germany

Alan Ehrlich

I've posted a photo of three ladies >from Willy Rosen's cabaret troupe, "Die
Prominenten", on ViewMate at the following address ...
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=21000

The image is said to be >from their appearance at the Lutine Palace cabaret
in Scheveningen-Holland, August 1938... in the show "Laatste-Nieuws!"
(German title: Soeben erschienen).

Based on a (perhaps only partial) list of known cast members, the ladies
shown in this photo may be Trude Berliner, Henriette Davids, Claire
Eiselmeyr and/or Hortense Raky... alternatively they may be other cast
members whose names currently are not known to me.

Do you recognize any of the ladies in the photo? Or can you match up any of
their faces with the names above? Thanks.

Length of service in Russian Army #ukraine

barry_helfand@...

What circumstance allowed my maternal grandfather, Yehuda Yankel Ziskrojt, to serve only three years and nine and one half months in the Russian Army?  His military papers indicate he was in the Army >from January 1, 1891 to October 17, 1894 when he was transferred to reserve status.  His reserve duty started December 17, 1894 and was scheduled to end December 31, 1909.  Yehuda Yankel was the eldest of five siblings and began his active duty shortly after his twentieth birthday.

According to Petrovsky-Shtern, in Jews in the Russian Empire, 1827-1917, a statute in 1874 created a legal obligation to serve six years of active duty and nine years in the reserves, except in Siberia where the time periods differed.  There were three types of exemptions for a son who had to support his family but Petrovsky-Shtern does not indicate a length of service, if any.  However, the length of service would be >from six months to eighteen months for university, high school, and grammar school graduates.

Thank you for your help.

News about Odessa #ukraine

Ariel Parkansky

Hi everybody,

You haven't heard about me recently but it doesn't mean that the Odessa projects are in stand by.

On the contrary, the different translation projects advance at a good pace and more translated vital records are added every week to our database.

We have also received new vital records. Some are already published and others will be published soon.

The great news is that a whole new book has been added to our collection:

The Commemorative Book of Schools in Odessa District for Academic year 1913-1914.

It contain two parts:
Part I for Schools depending of the Odessa District
Part II for National Schools
The book  (in Cyrillic) has 586 pages, statistics and names of the students per school.
There's an alphabetical index at the end.

The book is in Cyrillic and I expect in the near future to translate the index as done for the All Odessa Directory of 1902-3.

The project of restructuring the Ukraine SIG website is advancing very well and I expect you'll hear more about it by mid-January.

I'd like to thank all the volunteers that have or are collaborating with the different projects, to all the comments I've received >from you and to those who have donated for the acquisition of new fonds.

Please continue like this, this project cannot be done without your help.

Thanks to all of you.
