Town name was also known as Nieswicz, pron. [Nye shveeh tch]
You may examine short town interwar description through Polish Business
Directory. Town was (is) located in the Czarnkow district of Volin Province.

http://data.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/1929/loadtop.htm?2197

It appears that town name is indeed confused with the mighty Jewish town
Nesvizh (Nies'wiez') in Belarus..

Town name is not listed in known Jewish Gazetteers, but the two names listed
in this Directory for this town: LESZNER and SZNAJDER are definetely Jewish.

I wrote a bit earlier that when Poland took over Volhynia (ex Russian
Province) at the end of WWI, German sounding Jewish names have been
Polonized, eg. names contaning German 'sch' or 'stein' and similar have been
converted to 'sz' and sztajn".

But on the other hand, German population of the German small towns in
Wolynia, (refer to Czarnkow), founded and populated by the native German
colonists, have retain their original sounding names.

Meeting of the Citizens of Legnica #poland

jan meisels allen <janmallen@...>

I am posting this for someone in Israel who is not a member of the JRI-PL
list and whose husband comes >from Legnica before immigrating to Israel.
She "stumbled" onto this special meeting on June 4, 2004 in Legnica while
researching their trip there.

During the first week in June, the town of Legnica, Poland is having its
first Meeting of the Citizens of Legnica for which they are inviting anyone
who has ever lived there to take part. They are asking people to send
pictures, essays, etc. http://www.tml.lca.pl/pliki/sympozjum_en.pdf.

I have been told there may not have been much of Jewish population prior to
World War II but after the War many Jewish refugees flocked to that town and
rebuilt their lives until 1957 at which time most immigrated to Israel.
There was a Jewish school, synagogue and other cultural institutions.

http://www.tml.lca.pl/zjazd_en.phtml is the letter inviting people to take
art in the symposium

http://www.tml.lca.pl/zjazd_program_en.phtml is the schedule of events

http://www.tml.lca.pl/pliki/karta_en.pdf is the form to complete by March 31
for taking part in the symposium

What type of work is this? #poland

George Mason <gmason3815@...>

I have found a possible relative of mine in the All Poland Business
Directory of 1923. His name is listed in an occupation/business section
titled, "Agenturowo-komisowe domy" and, under his name is the description,
"dom handlowy". Can anybody tell me what type of occupation or business is
being described here? Also, does anyone know of a directory or registry for
Warsaw in the 1925-1935 era that indicates who lived at what address? I am
trying to find the name of the person who lived at Poznanska 3-10 about
1930. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
