NY Street Lookup Circa 1917 #general

Sara Lynns

Found my paternal grandfather listed in NY city directory 1917 at 646 6th. Would
anyone know (by chance) if that was residential or commercial THEN. Is there an
existing structure now?

Thanks New Yorkers and Genners

Surname: Pasaman #general

D & T <dg@...>

I have a question regarding the surname Pasaman. How can I find out if this is
either a Jewish name or Polish? The farthest back I can track it is to Zapole, a
village in the district of Lubomil, in Poland.

Thank you for your time.

Los Angeles Marriages #general

I am trying to determine if there is an on line index to marriages in the county
of Los Angeles and if so, the date range, if it exits. Does anyone in the group
know if such an index exists? I'd also appreciate knowing if an on-line marriage
index exists for any other counties in California.

Larger Version of Viewmate Polish Translation #general

Richard McMurtry <rmcmurtry@...>

Viewmate 4107 has an enlarged version of the polish 1855 death record for Tema
GUTMAN. I reposted this because I was told that it was too small to read in the
previous version.

Any help with this would be much appreciated because Tema GUTMAN was said to have
been a daughter of the Kotsker Rebbe. I don't think that she could have been his
daughter but I am hoping that a translation might shed some light on her surname
or the surname of her parents. Her parents are listed as Mordko and Maria
(Marya).

NY Vital Records; Remembrance of Far Rockaway, Family GERSON #general

Daniel Vangheluwe <vangheluwe-smietan@...>

Dear all

Could someone familiar with NY vital records tell me where I would write to
obtain death certificates for ancestors who are buried at Far Rockaway, Queens, NY
11691. I suppose I could write to Office of Vital Records;125 Worth Street, Box
4, Room 133; New York, NY 10013. Is'nt it? I found the explaination and a
printable form on :www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doh/html/vr/vrappld.html -

In France those records are free available for everyone. Thus, I saw thath in NY
the cost was 15 $ for a act. But, can I obtain "for the law" thoses records?
( Rywka Regina SMIETAN was "only" perhaps the cousine of Joseph SMIETAN,
grand-father of my wife)

The death records that I search, according to the Social Security Death Index, are
the followings:
Maurice (Moszek) GERSON (16-11-1886 Warsaw), deceased 03-1969 at Far Rockaway
Regina (Rywka) SMIETAN spouse GERSON (22-05-1898 Warsaw), deceased 05-1972 at Far
Rockaway.

I am especially interessed to find indices about theyre descendants, Leon and
Bronislaw GERSON (27-01-1919 Warsaw) (22-03-1922 Warsaw), emigrated with theyre
parents Maurice and Regina. In this case, is it better to ask copys of the
applications for the social security card (Form SS5), with the form available on
"Family Tree Maker" on line? Thus , to write at Social Security Administration;
Office of Central Records Operations; FOIA Workgroup;P.O. Box 17772;300 N. Greene
Street;Baltimore, Maryland 21290 (27$ for a copy)

Perhaps will some genner living in Far Rockaway remember of this family?

Many thanks for any information, advise or suggestion.

Studying medicine in Italy before WWII #poland

Orit Lavi <orit@...>

Dear friends

In my efforts to trace my aunt, Teofila Lewkowicz (born 1912, Lodz),
who has been missing since WWII, I am trying to locate the University in
Italy where she possibly studied Medicine in the1930s.

[I am not certain whether it was Teofila who studied there, or her younger
sister Irena Lewkowicz, who was killed during the Holocaust].

I would appreciate any info or ideas regarding where a student >from Lodz
would study Medicine in Italy in the 1930s.

Thanks and Shalom

SITE CITE: Jews in Voehl (Umlaut) #germany

Naomi Teveth <ntevet@...>

Dear friends,

this is to point you to another very interesting website I found concerning the
Jews in Voehl, located in the County Waldeck-Frankenberg (Korbach), district:
Kassel, Hessen.

Most wonderful are the interactive family trees (Stammbaeume) of some families.
Clicking on a name within the tree will open up a page containing detailed
information.

To reach the family trees, please click on this link:

http://www.synagoge-voehl.de/Juden_in_V%F6hl/personen/stammbaeume/stammbaeume.htm

Families presented are:
BAER, BLUM, FRANKENTHAL, KAISER, KATZENSTEIN, KRATZENSTEIN, KUELSHEIMER,
KUGELMANN, LASER, LAZARUS, LIEBMANN, LOEWENSTERN.

Another part of the website contains an alphabetical listing of Jews >from other
locations in this county, such as Marienhagen, Basdorf, Voehl and Oberwerber.
The listing is not complete as it is a work in progress.
To reach the listing click on this link:

http://www.synagoge-voehl.de/Juden_in_V%F6hl/personen/uebersicht.htm

The cemetary is another part of the site with a listing of the buried with
pictures of the headstones. Go to this link:

http://www.synagoge-voehl.de/Juden_in_V%F6hl/friedhof/friedh_hilmes.htm

There is information to read about the synagogue, the Jewish school, houses where
Jews lived, a map of all the locations in the county where Jews lived, many
interesting articles, etc.

The site is in German, it is worthwhile to explore it thoroughly. In my opinion it
is a treasure trove. Wish you all the best.
