Plain Text information from AOL version 9 user requested #germany

GerSig@...

JewishGen plans to update the "Support" page on how to set
your email to plain text.

They've asked me if I have any knowledge of AOL v. 9 with
regard to being able to use it to create plain text email.

I seem to remember hearing that like versions 6, 7 and 8,
the current AOL software "improvement" provides no toggle
for switching to plain text.

If any member can provide information on how to set AOL 9
to write plain text email please reply privately to me at:
gersig@aol.com
I will pass the information on to JewishGen. Many thanks.

Sam:

I had the same situation occur when researching my ggm. The "Out of City"
reference means that the person died somewhere elese and was brought back to
the city for burial. My ggm was visiting her children in Norwich, CT, when
she had a heart attack and died. She was brought back to NYC and buried in
MT. Zion cemetery in May, 1936.

My ggm's NYC death certificate states that she died in Norwich and gives the
death certificate number. I suggest that you first look at the death
certificate for clues, but absent this information, if you know where the
person was buried - the cemetery (>from the NYC certificate), ask the
cemetery to check their records aand to tell you if they have the actual
place of death, then contact that locale for the death certificate.

Re: ketubah in 19th century Vermont #general

J&B Davis <bdavis@...>

A number of recent messages have stated categorically that
no copies of ketubot are kept by communities ... I beg to differ!

In my capacity (for the past 27 years) as
secretary/archivist/librarian/research officer for the
Australian Jewish Historical Society in Melbourne, Victoria,
I have had access to almost complete sets of ketubot issued
by many synagogues throughout Australia and New Zealand,
dating >from 1841 and continuing up to the present time
(in some cases). Particularly since the regular use of
printed (rather than handwritten) ketubot, bound
registers of duplicate certificates were kept,
with one portion being removed and given to the bride
under the chuppah, and the counterfoil kept by the
relevant issuing body.

Regrettably, in more modern times a large number of our
synagogues have not kept duplicate copies of their ketubot,
but only of the civil certificates.

Re: ELLERT: Lithuania(?), South Africa and Israel #southafrica

A. M. Lenhoff <lenhoff@...>

There was an Elias ELLERT who lived in Upington for many years; he owned
the Upington Hotel. He passed away in 1968 -- see cemetery list at

http://www.jewishgen.org/safrica/cemeteries/1/index.htm

I would guess that he was about 70 years old at the time. Unfortunately I
don't know any more about his history, but death records, which are
available in the SA Archives, typically list date and place of birth.
