I had no trouble finding Aron GREIF using the White Form >from Steve Morse's
site. (The Blue Form couldn't be used because the 1893 manifests did not
ask for or show whether a person was a "Hebrew"). I also had no trouble
enlarging the image using the magnifier provided on the right side of the
Ellis Island page ("Click to enlarge manifest"). The only information
shown in the enlarged manifest, additional to the posting, is that Aron was
27 yrs old, a pedlar (sic), an Austrian whose last residence was Austria,
destination was New York, he could read and write and he came with 3 pieces
of luggage.

If Lois was asking about how to print an enlarged image, that's a whole
different story. Perhaps someone can correspond with her privately.

Re: Montefiore Cem., Queens, NY #belarus

Brenda & Irwin Etter <etterbi@...>

My ggf is buried in Old Montefiore cemetary. I went there two years ago
when I was in New York. He wasn't in their computer system, but the person
in the office checked their card file for older burials and found it. He
died in 1926.

Also, his name in their records and on his tombstone were slightly different
from the records my mother gave me. His common name was Smicha, but they
had him listed as Simon. Also, the last name was a different version of the
family name. Because I knew the organizational plot he was buried in, it
helped to confirm. The final confirmation came at the tombstone because it
had a photgraph of him that was identical to the one picture I have in the
family album. I believe this is an old Russian style.

I thought the office was very helpful. I'd suggest a phone call.

Re WOLK and where to start looking #belarus

Deborah Glassman <dgg2020@...>

The best place to start would be to look at those census records and see
what year he was naturalized, and in what year he claimed to have arrived.
The naturalization record will list his specific date of immigration.
But there are some good record sources available online today, that allow
you to complement the traditional "start with the last known record"
approach. I like the EllisIsland data base accessed off the Jewishgen.org
site "One Step Search". In that list, for instance, there are 165 people
with the surname Wolk, before we check any other spellings.. A quick perusal
shows around 8 >from Minsk.
"Max" was a name that sometimes was brought >from abroad, but most often was
an Americanization of Mottel (or more formally Mordechai) or of Menashe.
There is a 28 year old named Menashe Wolk traveling to his brother-in-law
Israel Perewoskici [my reading] thru Ellis Island in 1904. The fact that he
would be around ten years older than the age you have may not be
significant, ages were routinely reduced on records subsequent to
immigration. You can frequently see people aging just seven years between
decennial censuses. After you have moved through the US records, you can
start taking advantage of the many Minsk area records posted on the Belarus
sig.

Good hunting!

Cemeteries make mistakes and sometimes you get a clerk who does so.
I had called Mt. Olivet Cem, non-Jewish in Queens NY, and was told my
Relative was not there even had a death certificate. So I pursued two
Other cemeteries with the same name in the NY area and go nowhere.
I called the first Mt. Olivet Cemetery and this time found the person.

HANSON-SHERWOOD and VELIN in Copenhagen #general

Derek & Rosemary Wenzerul <dandr@...>

I am trying to trace two cousins who I know lived in Copenhagen, Denmark in
1986.

Their names are:

Toni HANSON-SHERWOOD and her brother Nils VELIN.

They had a brother Peter who died and their mother was Evie Velin (nee
Vandermolen/Molen).

I have tried looking at the Danish Telephone Directory on-line, but as I
don't understand Danish, I can't enter the details.

We have lost touch with this side of the family and would love to make
contact.

I would be so grateful if anyone can help?

Re Stenlauf or Steinlauf in Austria Hungary #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Richard W. Schiff [27 July 2004 ] asks about the location of Stenlauf or
Steinlauf in Austro-Hungary ie the Habsburg Empire. He is researching the
Jacob KOHN family who lived in this town during the late 19th
century. Jacob Kohn married Pauline ENGLANDER.

I suspect this is part of Waag Neustadtl or Neustadt an der Waag also known
as Vag-Ujhely or Vagujhely in Hungarian with just over 20,000 inhabitants
today. In the19th century, the small town had a sizeable Jewish population.

The town which is now in Slovakia is known as Nove Mesto nad Vahom
or Nove Mesto. This is an area dealt with by the Hungarian SIG of
Jewishgen, but because many Jews migrated to Vienna, the capital of
the Habsburg Empire, Richard may well find family links on the
Bohemia-Moravia [Bohmor] SIG group. The name of the latter
SIG is misleading as it covers Vienna and the rest of Austria as well,
with its much larger Jewish population approaching 220, 000
at its height :

The town may be LUZKI in the Wilno region as per Yad Vashem's Avraham
Klevan's register of destroyed Jewish Communities, Jerusalem 1982.

2. My recently late grandmother said that her parents' hometown was
"Vugge," Poland (that's how it sounded)--spelled something like
"Logzski"--a border town with the Russian border, wherever it was circa
1895. These fragments don't add up to anything for me . . . any help=
on the town? Could she possibly have meant as far away as Lodz?

Negocyant Translation Thanks #poland

Rebecca Fenning <macguffin317@...>

Thanks to all who offered an explanation for the word "negocyant" (which,
for others interested, is not Polish, but French, and means businessman or
trader). I feel a little stupid for not realizing this myself, after taking
6 years of French, but my excuse is that that was a long time ago!

Thanks everyone for your prompt willingness to help me out!
