JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Dear all,
I am currently researching my great-uncle's family, who settled in California in the 1850s and 1860s, and have so far done work in censuses and online records, trying to get a basic outline of where his family was located and trying to flesh out the bare bones of the pedigree chart he gave me. The first arrival in the US was apparently his g-grandfather, Moses Mendel FEDER, born around 1836-1838 in Prussia -- my uncle was told he arrived in San Francisco in 1852. In 1860-1870, he lived in Colusa County, California, before moving to San Francisco where he lived until the 1906 earthquake, which sent him south to Los Angeles, where he died in 1915. Upon his death, the LA Times ran an obituary featuring a photograph (>from a 1912 article about his golden wedding anniversary) and a discussion of his role as a leader in Jewish charities and synagogue affairs. In the 1860 census, he is listed living with a Samuel FEDER, born about 1839, who I assume was a brother, but I have been unable so far to find him in any subsequent censuses. In the 1880 census, Moses' mother, Rosalie (b c1798) is living with the family in San Francisco. In 1862, Moses FEDER married Esther COHN, born about 1842-1846 in Prussia. They had at least 7 children: Henrietta, b 1866, m. Charles M. FRIEDBERG in 1885 Pauline, (ca1873-1877) Louis, b 1873 Rachel (Ray), b 1875 Dolly/Dora, b c1875-1877 Gustave, 1877-1945 and my uncle's grandfather, Abraham S FEDER, b 1869. In 1894, Abe FEDER married Annie COHN, born 1871, probably in Ventura County, California. Her parents were Morris COHN (b c1844) and Emily (or Amelia, b ca1841), who lived in Saticoy and Santa Paula during the period 1880-1910. I am still trying to piece this web of relationships together -- but Morris had a brother named Simon COHN who founded the town of New Jerusalem (now El Rio) in Ventura County in 1875. He was married to a Minnie COHN, apparently a sister of Esther COHN, the wife of Moses FEDER. I'm posting this in hopes of finding anyone with connections to these families -- or with other pioneer families in Colusa & Ventura Counties -- Thanks in advance! David KATZ of Brooklyn and Israel
#general
HeyJudy123@...
I do realize that, among European Jews, the name David KATZ is about
as common as John Smith would be in England. Yet I also realize that, for the generation born in the earliest decades of the 20th century, there may not be much more time to answer questions. My father, Bernard SEGAL, was born in New York in 1909. He was raised predominantly in the Brooklyn neighborhood called "Brownsville," most famous as the home of "Murder, Inc." Dad died in 1983. Shortly before his death, I was walking with him in Manhattan and we met (in Brooklynese, "bunked into") one of his boyhood friends >from the "old neighborhood." The man's name was David KATZ, but Dad used the Yiddish pronunciation of "Duvid" in talking to him. "Duvid," Dad said--remember, in 1983--"where have you been?" "Oh," replied Duvid, "I joined the Abraham Lincoln Brigade (to fight the Spanish fascists) in 1939 and, >from there, I became a Merchant Marine." (I assume in ships belonging to the United States.) "I went on to (what then was still) Palestine. Immediately following World War II, I smuggled guns and, eventually, refugees into Israel. Finally, I became an unofficial advisor and expediter for Golda Meir." I have thought about this man, and this conversation, countless times since Dad's death. How much of what he said was true? Any of it? All of it? It occurs to me that his life paralleled a major episode of the Jewish experience in the 20th Century. In the last few months, a book called "Nemesis" by David Evans has been published. It chronicles Aristotle Onassis's purportedly successful plan to have Robert Kennedy assassinated by Palestinian terrorists. Among the ancillary characters are a Brooklyn Jew named David Katz, explicated as behaving in a despicable fashion. Does anyone have any further information on David Katz of Brooklyn? Could the David Katz described so unflatteringly in "Nemesis" be the same Duvid Katz who described himself to my father as a hero of the Israeli underground? Since this query is so far off-topic in genealogy, I must ask anyone responding to reply privately. I feel confident that some of our wonderful participants will be able to provide information pertaining to these questions. Thanks in advance, Judy Segal New York City, USA All end up in NY: SEGAL (all spellings) of Lithuania, St. Petersburg, Paris, London, Liverpool, Manchester, Dublin, Canada; SIMON of "Ilya" in former Vilna Gubernyia, now Belarus, also >from there KORN, ROBBINS (possibly RABINOWITZ) ROGOFF, WECHSLER; HERKSOVITS (alt spell), BAYERN, ROSENBERG, RAPPOPORT, KOHN, HABER of modern Slovakia, towns Kosice & Huncovce, Budapest, Ohio; SCHWARTZBERG (alt spell) of Bessarabia/ Ukraine in modern Moldava, Canada

Rock singer Nina GORDON (Chicago)
#general
Steve Cohen <scohen@...>
Dear J'genners,
I have strong circumstantial evidence that the rock singer Nina Gordon from Chicago is my 4th cousin. Her real name seems to be Nina RachelSHAPIRO, and she uses her mother's maiden name, GORDON, professionally. She founded and then left the rock band "Veruca Salt". (I know nothing of her music, actually.) Her older brother, Jim SHAPIRO (or James Gordon SHAPIRO), was a drummer for this band, and then left also. My genealogical interest is through her mother's GORDON side. If you have direct knowledge of Nina, how to contact her, or about her parents' names (which would prove her relationship), please contact me privately. I have a probable descendancy chart, but need to be certain before sticking my neck out and trying to reach her. Thanks, Steve Cohen (Central New Jersey)
