My father, Abraham Clare, originally Klor or Klior was born in
Anixst(Anycsciai), Lithuania in 1892. He arrived in the US in 1912 and
his entire family emigrated to Cordoba, Argentina.

I am searching for anyone who may be related here in the US and also looking
for descendants of his first cousin Sora Basha Klor (Yoffe?) who may have
lived in the Chicago area.

Polish translation request for Drohobycz Galicia death record #general

Mark Jacobson

Hi
Could someone please help translate the information
written in Polish on the 1900 Drohobycz, Galicia death
record for my g-g-grandfather Ichel Eisig KAMMERMAN,
son of Schlomy and Ryfke Rachel Kammerman. Ichel's
occupation on other records is listed as Rybak, Polish
for fisherman (same occupation as his son), but I do
not see that listed here. The record is written
clearly, but I'm not sure what it says.
Thank you!!!

Hello!

I just received a birth record of my great grandfather's brother >from Mormon
copies of Melitopol archives.
This records says that his father Aron Leib Aronov BERENSHTAM was a member
of Agricultural colony Novo Borislav.
This information suprised me because:
1) As I know the family lived in Akimovka, near Melitopol
2) Novo Borislav colony is placed relatively far >from Akimovka, even in
another uyezd (do somebody knows which uyezd? Kherson?)

I think (without any prove) that the family moved to Ukraine >from Courland,
so my questions are:

1) Do somebody knows about some archival resources with a list of jews who
moved >from Courland to Ukraine agricultural colonies?
2) Do somebody knows about some lists of jews who arrived to Novo Borislav
colony?
3) Where should I search for census data and metrical books of Novo Borislav
colony - Kherson or something else?
I searched rtrfoundation.org, but they have not entries on Novo Borislav.
4) Is there chance that they all the time lived in Akimovka but somehow were
recorded as Novo Borislav citizens?

Thank you!

Pavel Bernshtam
Hi Pavel,

In one of the sources (Yevrei Ukraine, Kiev 1995) which lists data from
1923-24, in Odessa Guberniya within Cherson Okrug there is Berislav Rayon
listed.

Berislav Rayon consisted of colony Volodarske (260 households, population
1,225) as the part of Volodarske Selsoviet, and colony Novo-Berislav (74
households, 401 population) as part of Dremaylov Selsoviet.

Providing a Family Name where none existed #general

harold lewin <har_mir@...>

In the process of recording and computerizing very early English
synagogue records which are to be sorted according to family name, it is
clear that the lack of a family name presents a very real difficulty. How can we
list family names if only the patronymic is given and especially where the family
name is to be the primary field?

One solution seems to be to adopt the system common in the Prussian Empire
and eastern Europe and to bestow a putative family name i.e. the given name
of the father, as found in the patronymic.

Most of us are familiar with the custom of taking the given name of the
father as the family name, in the period before the compulsory introduction
of family names and where we do not have an established family name
extending over several generations. This Prussian custom is also seen in
early 19th century English synagogue records. For example, Moshe, whose
father was Yaakov ben Yehezkel, would have the patronymic Moshe ben Yaakov (for
synagogue) which was usually simplified in civilian life to Moshe Yaakov, so that
Yaakov became the new "family name" for one generation.. May I invite comments on
a proposal to exploit this custom in order to give family names in places
where they do not exist? Do readers consider it a legitimate procedure?
