Descendant of Rabbi Yosef KARO #rabbinic

Menachem Butler <menachembutler@...>

Rav-SIG'ers:

A number of years ago, a handyman with the surname KARO (or a
variation of it) did some work at my home and when we asked him if
he was related to Rabbi Yosef KARO, (author of Shulchan Aruch, Beit
Yosef, Kesef Mishna,) he answered that he was indeed a descendant.
Alas, as I was younger then (and partly because it wasn't my family),
I never pursued this genealogical lead.

Should anyone be interested, I think that I might be able to find
this person. Let me know.

Thank you,
Menachem Butler

Thanks to All for "Mose Cohn" help! #general

S. Harris <jewishgen@...>

I usually express my thanks for those who assist me with lookups
individually, as I would prefer others do- so as not to clutter up the
list-- but in this instance I have not only done that but wish to let
everyone know that there's no need for anyone else to help me out re:
"Mose Cohn."

As I mentioned, this was not the correct name for the proprietor
of E.M. Cohen & Sons in Des Moines. Not only that, it was amusing to
read that the census-taker got two of the children's names wrong: Mary
came out Marie and Eli was written as Hely.

Another census had Mary and Eli's brother, Sam(uel) listed as
Samy. (With an second "m" I would understand...)

Two Portraits - Viewmate ID #general

Flo Elman

Dear Fellow Researchers,
I have posted two portraits on the Viewmate site
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html - Numbers VM4678 & VM4679

Although I can make out terrific resemblances to my maternal grandfather's
family, I cannot place these women. I would guess that the dark-complexioned
woman seems to have been a daughter or sister (given name - Gitl??
Tsivya?? ) of Pesach GOTLIBOVICH >from Cherkassy, Ukraine. Do you recognize
the ribbon she has on her dress? The slender fair-haired woman may have been
a relative to KOROSTYSHEVSKY or GOTLIBOVICH. She is 16 years old in the
photo which was taken in 1919. Does she look like anyone you recognize?
Can you identify either of them? If you can help, please contact me
privately at haflo@shaw.ca

Many thanks,
Florence Elman

Re: WWI Alien Registration Cards #general

Hello Bert and Others,
Some WWI Alien Affidavits have survived for Arizona, Kansas and St.
Paul, MN. The Arizona records have digital copies online at NARA. These
were for German (and some Austrian) aliens ("citizens >from countries at
war with the United States during the First World War"). You can find
links to these at...

Online World War I Indexes & Records
http://www.militaryindexes.com/worldwarone/

Look about the 5th listing down. There may be others as well.

Good luck with your searches.

just note that other "destroyed" records have occasionally been
found in odd corners of archives here and there.

The State of Minnesota conducted an alien registration during World War I
from 1917 to 1919. Microfilmed copies of the completed multi-page forms,
which generally contain a lot of genealogically useful information, are
available at the Minnesota Historical Society and >from the society through
inter-library loan. For further information, see the Minnesota Historical
Society's website at <www.mnhistory.org>.
