Buying a death record for LA from overseas #general

Merv & Naomi Barnett

I need to purchase an Informational Certified copy of a
death record >from Los Angeles.

My question is this. In the information on the website, and also >from
correspondence received >from the Registrar Recorder/County Clerk, the
terms of payment are given as a check or money order payable to the
aforementioned office. No mention at all is made anywhere regarding
payment >from outside the US. In spite of my specific request >from them
regarding accepting payment >from overseas I have not had a response. If
I send them a check in Australian dollars will they accept it? Does
anyone have any experience >from outside the US with this matter?

Any advice gratefully appreciated.

researching HESSIE and RABBI JOSEPH POTASHINSKY - EKATERINOSLAV #ukraine

Ivan Krupit <krupit@...>

I have documentation >from my great uncle Louis, son of ultra
orthodox Rabbi Potashinsky who got into trouble, some political matter, and
ran >from a German community, or colony, on or about 1880 and left his wife
and three children there.and went to America to settle in Denver He also
writes about several pogroms that took place at that time. The rest of the
family left about three years later where they are reunited in Denver. One
of the three children is my paternal grandmother, Grace who married REUBEN
KRUPITZKY in Nov..1891
Google offers details of these colonies as well as details of 17 Jewish
Agricultural colonies established in Ekaterinoslav. I believe somewhere in
the Russian archives, perhaps in their census, additional inmfo may be
available. Hessie and Joseph were born in 1843, Grace in 1875
I wrote to the Russian archives in Dnepropetrovsk a few years
ago but they couldn't find anything - now you say their archives were moved
after WWII..- why wouldn't they tell me?? another puzzle..

Need translation of 1747 ritual murder document in Polish #ukraine

Ronald D. Doctor <rondoctor@...>

I have obtained a 27 page document that is a 1747 court case in which
several Jews are tried and convicted of ritual murder. The penalties are
the most gruesome I ever have read about. The trial occurred in
Krzemieniec, Poland (now Kremenets, Ukraine). The document is
handwritten in an old form of Polish. I would like to get this very
important document translated so that we can post the translation on
JewishGen. If you are willing to volunteer to help translate this
document, please contact me.

Research at Dnepropetrovsk Archives #ukraine

Paul and Debbie Weiss <ancesthntr@...>

I have tried in vain, several times, to contact the Dnepropetrovsk Archives.
Does anyone have a current URL for the Archives, so that I can not only
see what records are available, but can contact the Archives to ask about
obtaining copies of those records. I, personally, am seeking records >from
the 1860-1917 timeframe.

Thanks, in advance, for any assistance or advice that you may give.

PIZER RENOVITCH - Tracing help needed, please #ukraine

MARTIN RUBIN <martinrubin001@...>

My maternal great-grandfather was Barnett Renovitch. (~1859-1920). He was a
tailor in London, England {and he always gave his name to the census taker
as Goldstein!}.
On his marriage authorization, Barnett Renovitch gives his father's name as
Pizer
and states that he came >from Walkowishk, Poland {presumably Vilkaviskis?}.

I understand >from a genealogist friend that the book "Jewish Surnames >from
the Kingdom of Russia" says that the surname Renovitch originated in
Vilkaviskis and was originally Rejnowicz. Are there any other probabilities
for Vilkaviskis?

My Friend also came across a well-loved rabbi in London named Reinowitz,
also >from Vilkaviskis. She suspects that they were probably related but has
no firm proof. He is of the right age to have been Barnett's uncle. Does
anyone have these names in their Families? Can anyone advise me on how to
find VILKAVISKIS records as I am struggling to get further with this? Pizer
would probably have been born prior to 1881.

I would be grateful for any help and you should respond privately, unless
giving general advice on Lithuanian / Polish record sources.

Re: Question on Last Residence in SSDI #general

Adelle Gloger

Dear Genners,

Eden Joachim wrote that initially the SSDI indicated a
cousin died in Puerto Rico and that getting a death certificate
from Puerto Rico was difficult.
A more recent entry in the SSDI indicated U.S. Consulate
as last residence.

A death certificate of sorts or a document certifying the
death of an American citizen in another country can be
requested by contacting the U. S.State Dept.

The details can be found at:
<http://travel.state.gov/family/issues_death.html>

I am posting this to the group in case others have the same
question as the original poster.

I am trying to trace death details for Samuel Friend, my
