JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
KING Family of Galveston & Missouri-1860's

Dear Early American Researchers,
I have just joined this list and hope someone might be able to help me. I was born and bred in South Africa but moved to the United Kingdom 25 years ago. Since my arrival in the UK I have done a lot of research into my family who arrived in the UK in the very early 1820s. The family I am asking help with concerns 3 siblings with the surname of KING: 1- David Woolf KING 2- Barnett KING 3- Aaron KING It so happens that 2 brothers of my ancestor Miriam (King) BLOOM commuted between Galveston, Texas & Newport, Wales, UK between 1860 and 1900. The 2 brothers were: Aaron KING (1837-1900) and Barnett KING (~1834-~1924) Aaron King died in Newport, Wales & is buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery. While family stories tell of Barnett King dying in about 1924 and being buried in South Bend,Indiana. So far I have been unable to locate Barnett's exact place of burial and also been unable to get hold of a photograph of his gravestone. Family members also say that Barnett and Aaron are mentioned in some museum in Indiana but no-one has been able to tell me in what Museum and what was written about them. Both brothers were Picture frame makers, painters & decorators and had businesses in Newport, Wales & Galveston, Texas. The 2 brothers married 2 sisters. Aaron KING married Anna Paulina NEUMANN and Barnett KING married Selma NEUMANN. Both sisters were Lutherans but Barnett's wife Selma converted to Judaism and is also buried in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Newport, Wales. The UK Censuses show that both brothers had children in Galveston between 1866 and 1873 and then both families returned to the UK. Descendants of both brothers claim that both Aaron & Barnett KING were involved in the American Civil War possibly on the side of the Confederates and possibly as dispatch riders. I sadly don't have a subscription to sites such as Fold3 where I believe papers relating to these 2 brothers might be found. Another interesting fact about Aaron KING is that on his gravestone it is inscribed that he was the Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas. I have been in touch with the Masons of Texas and they replied that they have no record of Aaron KING having been a Deputy Grand Master, but then they reported that they had only searched their records between 1866 through 1874. I recently discovered that Aaron & Barnett had an older Brother David Woolf KING (~1820-1880). He too moved >from the UK to the USA in the late 1850's. David Woolf KING settled with his family in St Louis, Missouri. David was married to Sarah LAZARUS in London in 1842 and they had 10 kids the last 2 being born in the USA . David & his 2 sons who were born in the USA Abel & Myer KING are all buried in Indianapolis. I have so far been unable to locate the grave of Sarah King who appears to have died between 1862 and 14 Feb 1870. I assume she died and was buried in St Louis before the family moved on. I have been able to trace only 2 lines of descendants of David and Sarah KING. Their son Moses KING was a famous publisher being the President of the Moses King Corporation. Moses KING had 3 kids but I have been unable to trace any living descendants. I have had the most success in tracing living descendants of David & Sarah's son, oodman KING, who had only 1 son, Clarence Hopkins King (1885-1964) I can supply more details about the other untraceable children off-list if anyone needs more information about this family. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice anyone can offer me. We apologize for the problems delivering digests >from JewishGen and
hosted lists to many subscribers during the last week. Our mail server was mistakenly placed on a database that many mail providers use to block senders of unwanted mail. We managed to get the listing removed Saturday, and we expect delivery to be back to normal within a couple of days. If you have missed digests during this time, please go to the JewishGen Support Center at < http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen/Support.htm > and follow the instructions in section 3.8, "How do I retrieve old messages?" to request that your missing digests be resent. GUNZENHAUSER

Connie Cooper <llp7644@...>
I have been searching my geneology of my family >from a town in Germany
called Gunzenhausen. In searching the internet I came across a Joseph GUNZENHAUSER and Azriel GUNZENHAUSER it states they were Hebrew printers in the 1490 and moved to Naples. I have a question because my ancestory is so secretive I cannot find any information on it at all hardly. I came across this article and It stated the following (GUNZENHAUSER (Ashkenazi), Joseph Ben Jacob (d. 1490) and Azriel, his son, pioneers in Hebrew printing. The Gunzenhausers went to Naples >from Gunzenhausen in southern Germany and set up a Hebrew press, which >from 1487 to 1492 produced an impressive range of books see *Incunabula), in all about 12 volumes. mong them were the Hagiographa with various rabbinical commentaries (1487); Avicenna's medical Canon, the first and only edition of the work in Hebrew (Ha-Kanon); and the ) Is this stating that I have a Jewish background? The more I search I am locating more were there were GUNZENHAUSERs killed in the holocost I am sorry I have no knowledge of this or know anything about these kind of things. I found he had several sons some were in Jerusalem at the time they were in Naples. Is there a way I can find out more about them and if in deed they were Jewish? Thank You Connie Cooper, Jacksonville, Fl llp7644@yahoo.com

Fargotsztejn survivor of the Shoah
#poland
goldbergm@...
While in Israel this summer, I went to Yad Vashem to try to follow
up on information I found through JewishGen. Although the staffer in the research room went to retrieve the records for me, Yad Vashem closed for the day before I was able to get the records. Two questions arose: 1. While waiting for my turn, I saw a 1939-40 Warsaw phone book. It listed H. FARGOTSZTEJN, a lawyer living at SW Krsyska 30. In my own research, I have not seen an H. Fargotsztejn in Warsaw, or Mariampole and Prenei in Lithuania who would have been alive at that time. Yad Vashem had nothing else on him. A Chaim Fargotsztejn son of Ephraim and Ester was born in 1903 in Radon. Ephraim died in Warsaw. Any suggestions as to how to find this person? I did have relatives in Warsaw but they came to the US or died long before the Holocaust. I do know the descendents of Ephraim's brother who came to El Paso TX and then moved on to Memphis TN. 2. In the Radom Prison Records and in the Hungary Claims Conference list (the gentleman explained that each country had its own claims conference, but for some reason they were lumped under Hungary), I found ROMANA FARGOTSZTAJN, born in 1910, and her daughter MERY (MARY) FARGOTSZTAYN, born in 1933. Under code 293, they were both "authorized to enter Palestine." Yad Vashem said the request was made in 1965. Their pre-war address was Szwarjik Street in Radon. At Yad Vashem I was told that her second husband (no first name) was LUDWIG FASTMANN who survived and lived in Poland in 1947. It appears that Fargotsztayn (no first name) was her second husband. Since the fellow did not reappear with the document, I don't know how he came to that conclusion. Perhaps her second husband was Chaim or H. At Yad Vashem, the researcher found that Romana had a sister on Allenby Street in Tel Aviv by the name of BERTA ROZENFELD. Does anyone know Berta? I also contacted the Central Zionist Archives' Family Research Dept. when I was in Israel. They are supposed to have databases about people who immigrated to Palestine/Israel between 1919 and 1974. I asked them about information regarding FARGOTSTEIN but they didn't seem to quite grasp what I was looking for. Any help in connecting the dots would be appreciated. LitvakSIG shares information several ways - thru our public website
at www.LitvakSIG.org, thru this digest, which is hosted by JewishGen, and thru Shutterfly sites that are only available to paid members of LitvakSIG and contributors to most district research groups. LitvakSIG, JewishGen and Shutterfly are independent organizations that cooperate around shared goals. However, controlling your email is an independent function, not a shared goal! You can control how often you receive messages, but you must set each site individually. To control your email >from this discussion group, Go to http://lyris.jewishgen.org/ListManager Log in to JewishGen Edit your MAILING LIST preferences To control your email >from Shutterfly sites, Log In to Shutterfly Highlight MEMBERS on the top menu bar Click on EDIT MY SETTINGS Click on the EMAIL >from SITE tab Change your settings - there are many of them, read each checkbox to see how you want it set You must click SAVE to make the changes permanent. For our generous donors whose contributions take them to more than one Shutterfly site, I am sorry, but I believe that you have to set each one individually. If you are a LitvakSIG member, a donor to the Vilnius group, and a donor to the Kaunas group, you have to go through the steps three times, once on each Shutterfly site. Hope this helps cut down on excess email. Peggy Mosinger Freedman Coordinator Vilnius District Research Group
