There have been many stories about Abraham Lincoln's origins which grew out of
opposition to him during various elections and the Civil War period as well as the
lack of information about him. It was speculated that he was a Black, a Jew, and
other things. These stories mainly focused on his mother Nancy Hanks whose
origins were cloudy.

Various records and stories have been brought forward attesting to the fact that
Nancy Hanks was actually illegitamate and that she then had an illegitamate child,
Abraham Lincoln. If this is true then it becomes doubly difficult to determine
the origins of Abraham Lincoln.

One of the most persistent rumors was that Abraham Lincoln was the son of John C.
Calhoun, well-known South Carolina politician, whom he looked like. Calhoun was a
frequent patron of a tavern where Nancy Hanks worked. Another that he was the son
of Abraham Enloe, a man who hired Nancy Hanks and then got her pregnant. In all
these accounts, the purported father paid Thomas Lincoln to take the pregnant
Nancy Hanks away and marry her.

All of this is further confused by the many women who were named Nancy Hanks who
abounded in those days, including one who was a relative of Lincoln's mother who
had an illegitamate child.

So, it may never be known what Lincoln's exact orgins were unless DNA testing is
possible.

A few days ago, I had posted a report of a rumor printed in the newspaper the "New
York Post," to the effect that Abraham LINCOLN was Jewish. I had made it clear in
this posting that it was not I who made this claim, nor was it made by the "Post"
columnist who reported it.

The website offering the report is
<www.nypost.com/seven/03102005/gossip/cindy.htm> but I do not think that the
column will be accessible for free on-line for much longer. Due to difficulty with
the AOL email program, I unsuccessfully have spent significant time over the past
two days trying to share this website address; I am hoping that this letter gets
through.

To sum up the report: Rabbi Jeff KAHN of Temple Har Shalom in Warren, New Jersey
(USA) presented columnist Cindy ADAMS with the following facts: Lincoln belonged
to no church, his father's paternal grandfather's first name was "Mordechai,"
Mordechai had come to the U.S. >from the town of "Lincoln" in England, a town which
has a Jewish community dating to 1159. Additionally, Rabbi KAHN says that Rabbi
Issac WISE, the founder of the Reform Jewish movement, told people that Lincoln
had told the Rabbi personally that he had Jewish blood himself.

I shared this report in the theory that there may be some JewishGen participant
who has a similar family myth in his or her own family.

Indeed, within hours of my first posting, I did get an email >from another Genner
saying exactly this! A woman in her own mother's Belarus line is reported to have
been the bride of Mordechai Lincoln.

I have received an enormous amount of email on the topic since my posting, over 60
letters in three days. The majority, of course, came >from the USA, but England and
Israel are well-represented. I even received, in translation, a poem >from Russia
about heroic figures, most of whom were Communists, but Lincoln was included.

Another letter said that this rumor is straight out of the "Protocols of Zion;"
I'll admit, it does sound that way. Still another correspondent reported that John
Wilkes BOOTH, too, was Jewish. Several chided me for my gullibility (in my own
defense, I think that my posting made it clear that I was not endorsing the
story.) One correspondent felt that I was indulging in pointless gossip, claiming
that I was slandering this dead President. Another participant said that I should
have done more thorough research before involving JewishGen.

These last comments, to me, are besides the point. I was not endorsing the rumor,
I was sharing it, in the specific hope that it might offer a clue to another
JewishGen participant; in fact, it seems to have done exactly that.

More research on my part would not have changed the fact that this rumor just was
printed--albeit expressly acknowledged as a rumor--in a major New York City
newspaper. And, speaking empirically, have any of you ever heard of man named
"Mordechai" who was not Jewish? There seems to be no dispute among scholars that
this really was Lincoln's great-grandfather's name.

Finally, I fail to see how reporting a rumor of possible Jewish ancestry
"slanders" President Lincoln; actually, by law, one cannot slander a dead person.

This report is everything I know about this topic, all of it learned in the past
few days since the "Post" ran the blurb. If some of you find each other as a
result of connecting over this information, that's wonderful. If even one of you
validates a long-standing family history, that's wonderful, too. Yet, truly, there
is nothing more that I can add to the topic. There's no point writing to me about
it further, and I would suspect that goes equally for the columnist or the
newspaper.

Nonetheless, I am always pleased to get your letters. This correspondence with
Internet penpals around the world is one of the great bonuses of JewishGen.

A Railway Joke from Austria-Moravia #austria-czech

I know that jokes are generally considered off-topic for the List, but I
hope I will be indulged, as this one has a family connection. And after all,
Purim is coming up shortly, so you can consider this as being a Purim spiel

It was told to me by an uncle in Vienna, who travelled a great deal on
business around central/eastern europe. He probably got it >from his father,
and it's obviously of pre-WW1 vintage.

Actually, it's almost impossible to write this joke down, as it depends on
different accents/pronounciations, and it's impossible to understand unless
you speak German and Yiddish and know some pre-WW1 European geography.

But as I heard it, it goes something like this:

A Jew, not long arrived >from the shtetl, goes to the train station in Vienna
and asks the ticket clerk (in broken German with a strong Yiddish accent)

"Laibach willuch - I want to go to Laibach" (Laibach was then Austrian, now
it's Ljubliana in Slovenia)

The clerk doesn't understand his accent and thinks he might want to buy a
ticket to Villach (in Carinthia, near the Italian border)

So he asks "Laibach oder Villach?"

The Jew is confused and retorts:

Willuch Villach, willuch Villach, willuch Laibach, willuch Laibach. Laibach
willuch!!

Has anyone heard this before?

BERGMANN and VOHREZEK from near Chotebar #austria-czech

Today in preparation for visiting and speaking at the LA synagogue where the
torah scroll >from Chotebar resides, I was invited to the Shoah Foundation and
heard the testimony of a survivor >from this small town in S. E. Bohemia near
the district town of Havlicku Brod. Although there was just a prayer room in this
town, we have 5 scrolls as identified as coming >from there or the vicinity.
The Shoah Foundation had more than one testimony but this was the only one in
English. The lady interviewed was on a Kindertransport to England at the age
of 11 and her name is Olga GABAMYIOVA and her married name is Olga GRILLI. She
lived in her grandfather's house in Chotebar and his name was Viem BERGMANN.
Her maternal grandmother's name was Olga VOHREZEK BERGMANOVA. I would be
interested in anyone with any information to share.

Topic: Computerizing Indexes of New York Records

Time: 2:00PM
Place: Mid-Island Y JCC 45 Manetto Hill Rd Plainview, NY

Our guest speaker is John Martino, one of the founding members of the Italian
Genealogical Group. John has organized volunteers to create many online databases
of indexes to New York records. These indexes include, Kings, Bronx, Suffolk,
Nassau, Southern and Eastern District Naturalizations. He is currently
computerizing vital records at the Municipal archives. Already completed are New
York City death records for 1891-1929 and Groom's index for 1895 - 1936. His crew
is currently working on the New York City Bride's Index for 1871 - 1937. Many of
these databases are available online at
www.italiangen.org.

Admission is free and all are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
Our Mavens are available at 1:30PM to take your genealogy questions.

Dear Gesher Galicia friends,
Moshe Menachem Ekstein, who lives in Jerusalem, asked me about the brothers:
Menachem Nachum and Nathan Scwarz, sons of Joseph Mordechai. He thinks that
their former name was Meislish. They came >from Elazae Leib, who wrote "
Semen Rokeach". Mr. Ekstein thinks that this family came >from Lask. He asked
the descedents of David Dov Meislish, who was the Chasidic Rav of
Uihel-Hungary and came to >from Lask, but they did not know.

The family of Mr. Ekstein is also relatad to Raphael ben Chaim Meislish who
wrote Tosfot Shabat.

We will apreciate any help.
