Isidor MEYER in New York #general

Jim Bennett <bennett@...>

I'm searching for Isidor MEYER, born about 1906 in New York, son of Elias
and Maude, nee KLOTZ, MEYER. He had a brother Mortimer MEYER [1909-1984]
who settled in Los Angeles.

I believe that Isidor lived all his life in New York, and/or New Jersey.
But there's a chance he moved to Los Angeles, where his mother and brother
lived.

Re: Starokonstantinov area research group #ukraine

Jessica Falikman Attiyeh asked about interest in a Starokonstantinov
research group or SIG.

I would definitely be interested in research in that area.
Starokonstantinov and the nearby towns area are where my CHERNICK family,
and some related families, are from. Before the Kamenets-Podolsky
Archives fire I did find Starokonstantinov birth records for about ten
Chernick family members. I would hope those birth records were not
destroyed and will be make available in the future. There are still
other related families birth records that I would like to find.

LIPOWITZ / ABRAHAMSON, USA #general

Jill Anderson <jill.anderson@...>

Please does anyone know of the Lipowitz family, probably >from Brooklyn?
A Moses(?) Lipowitz married my great-grandmother, Hannah (Annie)
Abrahamson, between the years 1916 and 1920. She was living with her
daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Samuel Norr and their daughters,
Sidnie (Sara) and Dorothy, in Brooklyn. Hannah died in 1929. She was
originally >from Rokiskis in Lithuania and arrived in New York in 1916.
I am also looking for her other children - I know there was at least
one other daughter and at least one other son. Two of her sons lived in
London - UK - they were Marks (Menachem Mendel) and Maurice (Yisroel
Moshe). The family may have been called "Abramovich" originally.

Aaron PICKHOLZ - a singer #general

Israel P

A kind soul whom I met on JewishGen just found me a LA Times clipping >from
May 1926 describing a performance by a singer named Aaron Pickholz. The only
information given about him is that he was born in Austria and didn't "take up
his voice work" until he was forty - which means he was born probably no later
than the early 1880's, maybe much before.

I haven't a clue who this is.

We have fourteen pre-WWII Pikholz descendants with the given name Aaron and
none looks even close. Perhaps the fact that he was a singer suggests where to
look next.

Does anyone have a suggestion? (Ellis Island, JRI-Poland etc don't seem to have
anything relevant.)

Valkovisk #general

GRAHAM LEWIS

I have the UK naturalization certificate (dated 1890)
for Moses ROSENBERG, my wife's gggf, son of Abraham
and Rachel ROSENBERG.

The naturalization certificate says that Moses was "a
Native of Russian Poland, having been born at
Valkovisk".

Can anyone help me: where is this Valkovisk ?

Shtetlseeker gives dozens of possible answers
including 15 in Poland alone. I have no other clues.

Moses' wife was Leah ROSENBERG (her maiden name was
also ROSENBERG), and they had 7 children: Betsy,
Abraham, Joseph, Rachel, Ephraim, Hannah and Lena born
between 1871 and 1888.

The arrived >from overseas and settled in Manchester
in around 1873/4.

Many thanks in anticipation of any assistance.

Kind regards and Happy Purim.

Where is Ariopol? #general

Philip Belkin <philip.belkin@...>

My grandfather's place of residence, as listed in the Hamburg
Passenger List is Ariopol, Russland.

Does anyone know where in Russia is a place named Ariopol?

When he arrived at Ellis Island his place of origin was recorded as
Krasch, Russia.

I have not been able to find, so far, any reference to Ariopol or
Krasch on the internet.

Because of several requests, I have added the capability to perform
Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex searches to the search engine for online historical
directories at www.kalter.org/search.php. This feature is more
computationally intensive, so please do not use it excessively, or else the
site will slow down considerably and I will have to remove it. If you have
any successes using this feature, or if you have other ideas of how to
improve on the search engine, please let me know.

Thanks and best regards,
