Translation of Great Grandfather's Birth Record (ViewMate 5910 and 5911) #romania

Thanks to the many kind people who have already responded to my original
posting. Based on the responses I've received >from several of you, it
appears that the document I've posted on ViewMate relates to someone named
Israel Averbukh, not my great grandfather, Mordka Averbukh. I've submitted
a new document request to the Family History Library in Utah and will post
the correct record after I receive it.

First of all, the Shtetl Seeker doesn't find only shtetls, but all sorts
of places >from the smallest village to the largest city. And the word
"shtetl" is often used loosely to refer to all sorts of places. In
Eastern European Yiddish, a shtetl was a small town, with perhaps
a few thousand people, as distinct >from a village which would be called a
"dorf", and a city which would be a "shtot". As for your first question:
No, not only Jews lived there, although Jews might have made up a large
fraction of the population.

My father in law received 5 Bronze Stars for combat in World War II.
Unfortunately, I did not discover this until I located his Army papers
long after his passing. He never spoke a word of these awards. Noting
that many service records burned in 1970, is there another location in
which military honors were recorded? I would like to get the when, where
and how of his awards.

I would also like to know about this. My uncle was shot in the tear duct a
few days before 11/11 1918, on the Western Front, and was on disability for
the wound the rest of his life, but he claimed he never got any medals--I
was thinking about the purple heart. The wound is mentioned--date and
engagement--in his discharge papers, which I have. He was bitter about the
war and Wilson's promises, so maybe he never applied, but I would like to
find out about it.
Also, are the unit histories available anywhere? Officers were supposed to
write up every engagement, so I've always hoped it would be possible to
read about the actions that relatives participated in (their units are
mentioned in the discharge paper). Another uncle claimed he only guarded
prisoners, but at the same time he was gassed. WW I veterans, who are
mostly gone now, were always reluctant to talk about their experiences.

I tried to include it in my registration for the conference, I was told

There's only one silly question: the one you don't ask.

As far as I can tell, the ShtetlSeeker is a directory of every town,
village, and wide place in the road in all those countries. A
gazetteer, really.

There were some villages populated entirely or almost entirely by Jews,
but those were not the rule everywhere. In Poland and elsewhere, it
could be that there were only one or two Jewish families in a village.
In many cases one of these was the local innkeeper. The feudal lords
had a monopoly on acohol sale and production, and would license taverns,
etc. The licensee would pay a certain amount for the right to make or
sell beer or booze, and could keep the rest. Jews were often preferred
as license-holders, not least because they could generally read, write,
and keep accounts. Also, they were socially not part of the community,
which made it easier for them to keep a more, um, professional
relationship with their customers. (And when it was time for a
temperance drive, they made excellent scapegoats...)

Efrem Zalman SHOR, but I have not seen documentation that can
confirm this.

Incidentally, my research, blame no one but me, indicates that Saul
WAHL's wife Deborah DRUCKER is the daughter of David Yehiel RAPAPORT
who was called Yehiel the Madpis of Vienna. (Madpis and Drucker are
both translations of the word Printer)
