Marriage Records from New Orleans 1855, HART, LAVINE, SIMON, OPPENHEIMER, JACOBOWSKY #usa

Kay Goldman <kgoldman@...>

Hi Everyone

I recently found a reference to a marriage license for Lewis HART and Mina
COHEN. It was dated 1 October 1855 in New Orleans. This is >from the
Justice of the Peace records.

The first page of this record indicated that Bern ard Reiss, I think
that is the correct name, pledged a $200 surety bond for Lewis HART.
It is signed by Lewis Hart and B. Weiss --or Reeiss? This is unclear.
And it is also witnessed by Rev M. Kaufman.

First can anyone explain the circumstances of such a paper?

Also, would a Rabbi sign such a document?

Finally can anyone provide me with further information about this family.
We believe that they are my great great grandparents: Lewis and
Mina HART who lived in Osyke, Mississippi in the late 1850s.

Lewis died prior to 1860 and later Mina moved to Texas with her two
children.

Thank you for any assistance, Kay Goldman, College Station, Texas

This is a Four Week Course focusing on your immigrant ancestors and
their immediate families in the United States.

Database of burials for New York City's Potter's Field #general

Ira Leviton

Dear Cousins,

The City of New York has made a portion of its database of burials in their
Potter's Field on Hart Island available to the public. The search page is at
http://a073-hartisland-web.nyc.gov/hartisland/pages/search/search.jsf.

Please note that so far, information is available only for 1977 and afterward, and
includes about 65,000 of the 850,000 people buried there. More names will be added
in the future, although no timetable is given. Information >from before 1977 can
still be obtained >from New York City death certificates, which state the location
of burials and are available at the Municipal Archives for 1948 and before, at the
Department of Health for 1949 and afterward.

For more information, I suggest that everybody go to the related page
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doc/html/hart_island/hart_island.shtml and click the FAQ
link at the bottom.

The New York Times had a nice summary article earlier today at
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/10/online-searching-for-those-buried-and-often-forgotten-on-hart-island/?.

ViewMate translation request - Old German script #germany

Werner Hirsch

Please thank those who help you and support ViewMate, GerSIG and JewishGen at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/honors.asp
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've posted a short note written in old German script. I assume that it was
written by Maier ZUNDER in 1898 to his daughter, Sophie CHASE on her 38th
birthday. I have been able to read most of it, but need to fill in a couple
of words which are illegible to me.
I've posted it on ViewMate with what I've been able to read and translate so
far. I'd appreciate any help. You can find it at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM26910
Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.
Thank you very much.
Re: Geno 2.0 Results #dna
Harvey Kabaker
Mike,
The research geneticist who leads the Haplogroup G project at FTDNA
reports several problems in Geno 2.0, with not much progress in fixing
them. Customers are still having trouble transferring their data to the
G project, and "Erroneous items are still in abundance in transferred
results." Geno 2.0 was working on a revised version of the master tree,
using the SNP numbers, but it "has never materialized," he says.
Geno 2.0 labeled me as G-M342, which is in Haplogroup G at a high level.
Data >from both FTDNA and Geno 2.0 show me as positive for L-201. In the
older nomenclature, that makes me G1a1a, a rare subgroup of G1. So at
FTDNA I'm in the G-L201 subgroup, with about eight others in their
entire database. I asked Geno 2.0 about this, and they said they don't
have enough research to know whether L201 is a reliable subgroup indicator.
In other words, they haven't figured out the tree yet.
I gather, then, that Geno eventually will reclassify a lot of people
into subgroups; it seems unlikely that anyone would be moved, say, >from
R to G.
Do you have any experience with Geno 2.0 results showing they
could change, with time? The Genographic web site notes that
the product is Geno 2.0 Beta.
What situations might produce changes in reported individual
test results as accessed on-line, over time, for both autosomal-
derived ethnic ancestral groups indicated by the sample as well
as their percent contributions? Has this occurred more than once
time for you?
