JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Polish Tombstones before 1800

Marc&Carine Ryszfeld <marcrys@...>
Dear Jgeners
One of my RYSZFELD ancestor buried in the Warszaw cemetery lived between 1788 and 1840. He is probably of the generation that "invented" the last name RYSZFELD, as there were no last names in Poland before the 1800s. His father's first name is given on the tomb. I'm planning a day trip to the cemetery. I will be looking for surrounding tombs to look for older members of the family, although no last name would be given. What clues shall I be looking for on tombstones to try and find other family members? Were I to stay overnight, I may have some time to help anyone with a specific query in the cemetery. Trip is planned for march/april at best. Marc Ryszfeld Paris, France Researching RYSZFELD (Warszaw), STOCZYK (Warszaw), CHAIET (Ekaterinoslav), DON (Vilno)

Searching Israeli Phone Numbers in English
#general
Hello, Dear Colleague.
IsraelPB.com is an English search engine for Israeli phone numbers. Launched a year ago (and posted back then to this list), it seems that this website has not been fully assimilated in our community. And it definitely should be, as it is very useful. You can read the story of the website and of its creator, Shaun Waksman, a 28y/o Canadian-born who now lives in Israel (and a hobbyist genealogist) in a post I've published in both Hebrew and English in the Mishpachtoblogia blog: http://mishpachtoblogia.co.il/?p=3126 (English version) http://mishpachtoblogia.co.il/?p=3111 (Hebrew version). Bruno Huet <BrunoHuet@...>
Dear families,
Michelbach an der Lücke is a village in South Germany. Here, you can find one of the oldest Temple in Baden-Württemberg. The jewish life began about in 1556. You can find a french and german traduction of the families story on this Homepage: http://www.synagoge-michelbach-luecke.de/ >> (Gemeinde Wallhausen >> infos in french). The english traduction will be soon finished and be able to find on the same page. Many families are emigrated between 1850 and 1932, principaly in North America, Australia and some other countries. The story of this village and this temple are dead with this emigration, this escape. The story and the life are stoped but all these families live yet. I call you all together to help me to find members of these families and build new contact with me. I should like continue the History of these families and this temple through your reports, reports of joy but also injury, harm and hurt. If enough people help for this project, we could try to organize a meeting with all family members in Michelbach. I research follow families: Paula DREYFUS born GRUNDELFINGER(1894), Maximilie(Maxi) EICHBERG born OPPENHEIMER(1894), Albert ELKAN (1880), Klara (Clara) ELKAN born ELKAN(1883), Hugo ELKAN (1882), Selma ESSINGER born LOEWENBERGER(1883), Jenny GRIMMINGER born STERN(1895), Flora GRUENSFELDER born BERNEY(1886), Alfred GUNDELFINGER(1885), David GUNDELFINGER(1857), Heinz GUNDELFINGER(1932), Hugo GUNDELFINGER(1898),Kurt GUNDELFINGER(1936) Mina GUNDELFINGER born GUTMANN(1895), Peppi GUNDELFINGER born ELKAN(1871), Samuel GUNDELFINGER (1869), Sara GUNDELFINGER born STERN(1861), Selma GUNDELFINGER born KUENSTLER(1905), Frieda GUTMANN born GUNDELFINGER(1888), Helga KUDER(1927), Irma KUDER born GUNDELFINGER(1903), Walter KUDER(1930), Bernhard LOEWENBERGER(1892), Senta MEYER born STERN(1903), Meta NEUMANN born GUNDELFINGER (1885), Martha NEUSTAETTER born LOEWENBERGER(1888), Julie RIES born GUNDELFINGER(1858), Nathan ROSENTHAL (1888), Irma SCHILD born GUNDELFINGER(1892), Marta SELIG(1903), Benjamin(Beni) STERN(1862), Clotilde WASSER- MANN born LEININGER. Alphonse LAZARD
The dilemma is in the death Certificate of Alphonse LAZARD Paris 12,1861, #2291 (09-Oct-1861). According to the document this person died at 42 yo, was born in Bar-le-Duc, and was previously married to Clemence BLACH. The place of death was probably the Fondation Rothschild since one of the witnesses was living there. Neither witnesses were relations. I also have an Alphonse LAZARD birth certificate Gondrecourt, 1815,#1, born 6-Jan-1815 in Gondrecourt, and married to Catiche BRACH of Saarlouis . 1) could not find any births of named LAZARD in the 10 year tables of Bar-le-Duc. 2) Gondrecourt to Bar-le-Duc is 25 miles 3) information at death given by non family members is usually unreliable. 4) the fathers of Alphonse and of Catiche were both Butchers. Do I merge these two? What would you do? Pierre M Hahn, San Francisco pierre28@pacbell.net
