Orphanages/Asylums in the NY area- 1893, 1899 #general

Soc.genealogy.jewish <dave279@...>

My mother and her brother were placed temporary in an orphange/asylum
during the time period between 1893 and 1899
in the New York area. Mother passed away in 1965. I have been
trying to find out what orphanage/asylum she was in but to no
avail. I contacted the "Jewish Child Cre Association: and "American
Jewish Historical Society" but to no avail. I also looked on the
Internet for Non-Sectarain Orphanges/Asylums again to no avail.
Can someone tell me where else to go to find my mother during
that time period. Many many thanks. Dave Estes Winston at

JewishGen needs a volunteer in Ontario province in Canada #general

Saul Goldstone <sgoldstone@...>

Dear 'genners,

Our most important source of contacting other researchers regarding
possible family connections is the email address. Sadly, many of these
in our databases have been changed and notification was never sent to
JewishGen. These people are then lost to all of us.

The JewishGen lostNfound desk is asking that you help by giving us a little
of your time. We need a volunteer willing to make a phone call to people whose
e-mail addresses are bouncing. If a phone number cannot be found, the task becomes
to send a letter (a form letter will be provided).

If you are willing to do this in the province of Ontario (Canada)
please get back to me. A little bit of help in this effort can mean a lot
to someone trying to make family connections.

Re: Publishing genealogies #general

robert fraser <robertandginafraser@...>

A lot depends on what you mean by "publishing" and "genealogy". My
approach, and there are no doubt very many, has been to follow the style set
by my parents, who spent years, off and on, writing their story, or
testimony, if you like. Since I got seriously on to it, I've edited their
writing, corrected language and grammatical errors, added new information
that they never knew, added personal comments and some background history.

It isn't a genealogy, as in a long boring list on names, places and dates.
It's a story told in first person format of the history of my parents and
ancestors. It's also a work in progress; as new information comes to light,
it's "plugged into" the story. If some information is missing, I say so.
*One day* it will be finished and it will be "published". That is, copies
will go to a few close relatives and perhaps to the library of our local
JGS.

Seeking help & info Re Nicky Milstein(Belleville, Ontario) #general

alexallen@...

This is what I know >from a letter dated May 1959: My grandmother’s niece, Nicky
MILSTEIN, married a Canadian citizen in England in 1945. I do not know his name.
In 1946, she emigrated to Canada with her husband, and resided (through at least
1959) in Belleville, Ontario.

Nicky’s mother was Rachel MILSTEIN BROOKS, daughter of Yankel MILSTEIN.
She emigrated >from Bessarabia to England, along with her sisters Tauba (Toby) and
Reister (Ray) and her brother Morris (Moishe) around 1900.

I am seeking help with respect to Canadian immigration records that
identify the name of Canadian citizen who married Nicky Milstein and brought her
to Canada, and any information about their lives (and possibly deaths) in
Belleville, Ontario. *Bonus*: Information regarding how to contact Nicky Milstein
if she is still alive, or anyone who knew her.

Castle Garden Era Immigration to Other U.S. Ports #general

Plutsk@...

I have searched diligently but fruitlessly for my KURTZMAN and GOLD
ancestors in the Castle Garden lists, both the version Steve Morse has made so
accessible and the one Gary Mokotoff has just discussed in Nu? What's New?

My GOLDs got to the U.S. not earlier than 1882 and not later than 1885. My
KURTZMANs got here before 1877, but not I imagine before 1872. Both families
were >from Poland, probably the Plock area. My questions are first, if they
didn't arrive at Castle Garden, what port or ports is/are the most likely
candidates for immigrants of that origin and era; and second, what indices or
other finding aids exist for pre-1890 immigration lists for those ports?
Thanks very much for any suggestions!
