JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Berlin Weissensee Cemetery Needs to be Saved [says Jewish newspaper]

Fritz Neubauer
The German Jewish Weekly "Juedische Allgemeine" has two articles (page
1 and page 17) on the the Berlin Weissensee Cemetery in its issue of September 1, 2005. On page 17 the headline says: "Rettet den Friedhof!" (Save the Cemetery!). The cemetery is described as the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe with 115.000 graves - but since there are not enough funds for its up-keeping, the deterioration is advancing at a high rate. The article says, estimates say that about 40 million Euros would be necessary to save it - which is far beyond the means of Berlin Jewish Community (which would be theoretically responsible for it) or even the Berlin City Administration. One strategy seems to consist of having the cemetery recognized as "World Cultural Heritage" in the hope that this would mean funds for its restoration >from the Federal Government which faces federal elections in two weeks. No definite plans seem to exist at this point in time - various bodies and polititicians seem to pass along the reponsibility, and nature takes its course. - I just wanted to provide this information to the Jewish community outside Germany. With kind regards Fritz Neubauer, North Germany <fritz.neubauer@uni-bielefeld.de>

Has anyone heard >from people in the Jewish Gen organization in New Orleans.
They've been wonderfully helpful to me in the past, and I wondered how they all are going. Not to mention to fact that I wonder if all their records are OK. Babette Bloch MODERATOR NOTE: The Jewish Genealogical Society of New Orleans, like all JGS's, is a locally run, independent organization. It's not part of JewishGen.

ac <anitac47@...>
I hope (but often I'm not sure) that the English-speaking folks on this
list realize that many contributors to the list are neither native nor fluent speakers of English. They are using dictionaries or (unfortunately) online translating sites to ask questions or respond. I'm not sure how many of you are aware of this but even the simple English word "run" has over 50 meanings. It would be nice if when any of us reply, we use simple phrases, avoid idiomatic expressions, and give the person the benefit of the doubt. If you want to encourage folks >from other countries (and hence possible sources of assistance for you as well) to participate, it would be nice to give them support and understanding (and perhaps some more appropriate English to use in their inquiries). Cape Town is the City
Cape Province is the province. Cape Colony is an older term, historical name for the area. The borders probably were more limited than the later province. Other provinces until recently were Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal. Johannesburg was in Transvaal. Since apartheid died there are many areas with African names. Hope this helps, Ros Romem Jerusalem. PS I am researching Miller/Maller and see you are quite active on tha list. -------------------------- From: <Miltone@aol.com> To: "South Africa SIG" <safrica@lyris.jewishgen.org> Sent: Saturday, September 03, 2005 4:23 PM Subject: [safrica] Cape Colony

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>
Dear Avi:
You inquiry regarding your Lischauer/Lewis family can be researched by you via the resources I mentioned in my prior posting. In addition, you have now mentioned the family name you are looking for on the SA SIG digest and perhaps someone else will be familiar with it. Ann Rabinowitz annrab@bellsouth.net

Re Ann Rabinowitz's very interesting message on
Naturalizations, I have a question. There are no Naturalizations for 1920-1921 at the Archives in S.A. Does anyone know whether this will in fact be put on the Archives. I have been trying to get my grandparents and parents Naturalization papers without sucess because of the time period. Advice will be appreciated. Many thanks Beryl Baleson balden@zahav.net.il

Meaning of term "Rev" in obituary - see text
#general
Howie Axelrod <highwind1@...>
The text of my GGF's obit >from the newspaper contains the following
text. (note: He was an Orthodox Rabbi and a leader of the Scranton, PA religious community for 22 years). "Final tribute will be paid the deceased at 10 o'clock this morning with services in the Synagogue. Rabbi B. Davidson, Wilkes-Barre and Rabbi H. Guterman, this city, will have charge. They will be assisted by Rev. H. Kran and Rev. J. Glasman, this city" What is the meaning of the term "Rev"? I have seen this term used before as in "Rev. J. Schwartz - Rabbi". Is Rev a term for a Rabbi, or a reference to a non-jewish "Reverend"? MODERATOR NOTE: There was a similar question earlier this year that drew many responses. Search for the word "Reverend" in the archives at http://data.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.dll?jg~jgsys~archpop

Rabbi and wife buried separately? Why
#general
Howie Axelrod <highwind1@...>
My GGM was married to an Orthodox Rabbi who was a pillar of the
Scranton , PA religious community for 22 years. He died in 1931. His wife of 35+ years was killed in an auto accident 7 years earlier in 1924. In looking for gravestones, we have found only the wife (so far). She is in her own grave, which surprised me. What is the Orthodox practice of burial in such a situation? Is there a religious reason for an Orthodox Rabbi and a wife that pre-deceased him to be burried separately? Note, the wife is buried near her grandchilden who pre-deceased her diying at <1year and age 8 respectively. Howie ~~~always looking for info on the Libowitz and Zupnick families of Scranton Area, PA and the Axelrod family of Albany, NY)
