I am not a physician and I have not heard of the disease and there is
no reference to such on Google (which I assume that you had already
checked). But I have found this reference to "Black bread mould"
(mold, US).

Zygomycota - Zygomycetes - black bread molds, about 1,060 species
They cause soft fruit rot and black bread mold. Zygospores are dispersed
through the air and can remain dormant until conditions will allow them
to grow. Once they are able to grow they will then undergo meiosis and
germinate into structures, and may reproduce asexually.

Dear Hanna and all:
Hanna mentioned that she consulted the JewishGen Shtetl Seeker and also Geo--
Both are great sources of information about German towns.

Another source was cited by a GerSIG member late in August 2005:

http://www.literad.de/geschichte/ortsbuch39.html

This is a database of states, counties and towns in Germany and Austria. It can
be very helpful as you will see when you explore the website. I urge all our
members to add this site to your list of bookmarks / favorite places.

You can find your town in the list at:
http://www.literad.de/geschichte/ortsbuchbu.html

Note that it is listed alphabeticaly as Bruh not Brueh. When searching for German
words one should always check for ABC [vowel] XYZ and also ABC [vowel E] XYZ
if the vowel is A, O or U.

The website is in German. I looked for a toggle to English but did not find one.

GerSIG would welcome a user guide to this website for non-German speakers. If a
bilingual member could provide some help please let me know at GerSIG@aol.com.

Good luck, Hannah.

Many thanks to those who have provided the identification of the language
and translation for viewmate 6912.

Please take a look at viewmate 6913 to see the front of the picture.

Do you think the author of the notes on the back meant that
1) the older children were Rachel's and the younger ones, both girls were
Ephraim's
OR
2) that the children on the left side of the picture were Ephraim's and the
children on the right side of the picture were Rachel's?

We may never know, but I'd like some educated guesses.

Thanks again,
Susi Godfrey

Black Bread Disease ? What is this? #general

David Sencer

Ergot poisoning.

Ergot is a fungus that attacks grains, particularly rye. It produces at
toxin, a mycotoxin which can cause itching, diarrhea, gangrene,
convulsions and hysteria. It has been postulated that it was one of
plagues in Exodus. The last outbreak was in the 1920's in Russia. The
use of herbicides in farming has eliminated it as a major problem.

Black bread disease #general

Barbara Zimmer <bravo.zulu@...>

Black bread disease probably refers to what is also known as "St.
Anthony's fire" --- a ailment due to to consuming the fungus ergot
which grows on rye grain. (The hallucinogen LSD is a member of the
ergot family.)
Symptoms of St. Anthony's fire included " hallucinations, panic,
convulsions, and painful burning in their limbs that followed a loss
of circulation in constricted blood vessels. " [>from an article on
using ergot to treat migraine headaches.]
