Smyrna, Turkey #general

Sam Wolff <baalh@...>

Does anybody have any experience in conducting
genealogical research in Smyrna, Turkey? I was
informed by a local Jewish person that the old records
were destroyed in a fire in 1900 and that I could
search the cemetery but that would be
"time-consuming." Is there not a register of the
deceased in the cemetery? Any tips would be welcome.

Sam WOLFF, Jerusalem (formerly Chicago)

researching HARAVON and AMADO, Craiova; WOLFF, Braila; LIGIER, Bulgaria;
SACHS, Prussia/Baltimore; SCHWEITZER, Russia/Chicago; FEIBEL, Germany;
GOROVOY, Belarus/Chicago; BASKIN, Pinsk/Chicago; ROJESKY, Ukraine/Minneapolis;
GORDON, Russia/Minnesota; KOSSOWER/KASSOWER/KAUFMAN and BERLEWI,
Nowy Dwor, Poland/Chicago and TUCHTEN, Bucharest/Chicago.

Rabbinical Source Ohole Shem #general

Nachum Tuchman

If you go to the Hebrewbooks.org website, URL to follow, you will find
the book, Ohalei Shem digitalized and on line.

There are both English and Hebrew pages for searching. I have read
through some of the books that can be found by searching under the
category of biographies.

http://www.hebrewbooks.org/chooselang.html

A direct link to the book Ohalei Shem is at the following URL.

http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdf/ohaleishemus.pdf

Regardless of what language you search in, most of the books are in Hebrew,
with a few in English, and as the site has digitalized these books,
you will only get them in the language that they were written in.

Does anyone in the group have easy access to the rabbinical source Ohole Shem
(Ohalei/Oholei Shem), written by SN Gottlieb, Pinsk, 1912? (I also read
somewhere that this book may have been reprinted in Jerusalem around 1983, but
this is unconfirmed).
If so, could you please contact me privately.

Many thanks,

Finding death cert with mangled spelling #general

Wendy Griswold <gris@...>

Hi, cousins. I pass this along in case it will help someone else.

Having tried every mangled spelling I could think of, I was unable to locate
my aunt's death cert. However, I knew where she was buried. A very kind
person at Old Montefiore found a Fannie Lebit (the correct name is Ledet) in
about the right location, with the right date. The name on the headstone is
correct, but the name they have on the records and on the death cert is the
mangled version.

Hey, they got 3 letters right, not to mention the number of syllables.

Anyway, a back-door approach. Hope it does someone else some good.

Regards,

Wendy Griswold

Searching: BLITZ (near Lemburg), EINHORN (near Nowy Sacz), PFEIFFER/FIFER
(near Lemburg), DWASS/DAVIS (Ekaterinoslaw), WENZELBERG - every imaginable
spelling - (near Nowy Sacz),
SHIFULDREM (Near Nowy Sacz, spelling highly questionable)

Dear Genners:

Wondering if anyone is looking for LITWAK/BORENSZTAJN families in the City

This is one City that was not filmed by the Mormons so the only way to go is
by writing to the Archives.

Thank you,

In Switzerland, there is a Luzern-Stangelberg Railway. So presumably

I don't think so. On Google, there is only one text,
and that is used in many "wiki" look-alike sites.

That railway track goes to Engelberg!!!

So that would be a simple spelling mistake.

Re: Australian Help/Advice #general

Allan Jordan asks for help with research in Australia.

When you search ("Google") for the expression "Dead Persons Society" in
Australia, you will see a number of groups located around the country.

For example, the Group in Toowoomba may be found at http://www.audps.com/

I have no experience with any of the groups and I am not a member.
However, they appear to provide a lot of localised knowledge and
expertise. And Toowoomba is a long long way >from Melbourne, where I live.

Good hunting, Allan!
