Dear Genners:

Wondering if anyone is looking for LITWAK/BORENSZTAJN families in the City
of Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski?

This is one City that was not filmed by the Mormons so the only way to go is
by writing to the Archives.

Thank you,

Helen Reiss

In Switzerland, there is a Luzern-Stangelberg Railway. So presumably
there is a place called Stangelberg but I can't find it.
I don't think so. On Google, there is only one text,
and that is used in many "wiki" look-alike sites.

That railway track goes to Engelberg!!!

So that would be a simple spelling mistake.

Allan Jordan asks for help with research in Australia.

When you search ("Google") for the expression "Dead Persons Society" in
Australia, you will see a number of groups located around the country.

For example, the Group in Toowoomba may be found at http://www.audps.com/

I have no experience with any of the groups and I am not a member.
However, they appear to provide a lot of localised knowledge and
expertise. And Toowoomba is a long long way >from Melbourne, where I live.

Good hunting, Allan!

Jewish Cemetery in Buffalo, NY? #general

Hilary Henkin <hilary@...>

Dear group,
Someone in another genealogy listserve I subscribe to was wandering
through Concordia Cemetery in Buffalo,NY. She noticed another
cemetery behind the back fence, and could tell >from a few of the
tombstones that it is probably Jewish. She'd like to know more about
this cemetery - can anyone provide any information?

I checked the IAJGS Cemetery Project, and there's nothing listed for
Erie County.

Conversely, If you'd like more info, I'll be glad to share here email
address or forward a message to her.

Translate Yiddish phrase on back of photo? #general

Hilary Henkin <hilary@...>

Dear group,
I have an old family photo, on the back of which is a handwritten
Yiddish word or phrase. It's particularly hard to read because the
photo has water stains, and a child scribbled on the back as
well. (the identity of the child is lost to history, luckily for them . . .)

If anyone wants to take a shot at it, the direct URL is
<http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=7093>.
If you want to browse to it, it's number VM7093, near the bottom of the page.

Further details: The family is Joseph and Ida Katz and their
children, and their mothers. It was taken in Russia (Ukraine) before
they immigrated in 1905-6.

If you need a higher-resolution file, let me know.

As always, please reply privately.

Regards,
Hilary Henkin

Verba, Vohlyn and Afula, Israel #ukraine

I am a member of a synagogue in Afula, Israel that was built by survivors
from Verba, Vohlyn Gubernia (now in the Ukraine) in the years 1959-1960.
There is a big memorial wall to the Jews of Verba who were murdered in the
Holocaust. It is a small synagogue. We are now facing the fact that the
synagogue is in bad condition and we need to do a big renovation in order to
keep the building >from destruction.
I am hoping to find anyone who can help us to find Verba descendants or
anyone who is interested in helping us preserve this important synagogue and
that will help us to keep the Verba memory alive.
Please let me know if you have any ideas on how I can best go about
finding people who would be interested in helping us with this project and
if you may have come across any others looking for ancestors >from Verba or
towns nearby.
Thank you so much for anything that you can tell me.

I tried to order it and only found it was for the UK. So I sent a message
like this and got a lot of replies >from people saying how to order. I
went back to the site and found it was still not there. I finally ordered
it by sending a check in the mail to England. I'll see if it produces the
book or not. But, like you I think it is all too iffy. Now someone says
it is sold out.

My husband has Rabinowitz's but don't know where that branch is from.
Will send your email for him to check.

San Francisco Bay Area JGS Fieldtrip 11-20-05 #general

Jerry acobson <drjjsf@...>

Berkeley and San Francisco Meeting

***Note New Time and Place***

Event: Field Trip to the Holocaust Center Of
Northern California
Date: Sunday, November 20, 2005
Time: 11:30 AM
Place: HCNC
121 Steuart St.,
San Francisco, CA

The last meeting of the year for both the Berkeley and
San Francisco members will be a field trip to the
Holocaust Center of Northern California. The HCNC is
now ensconced in its new location, at 121 Steuart
Street, San Francisco, where several other Jewish
non-profit cultural organizations are headquartered.

Please plan to arrive at 11:30 am (yes, an hour
earlier than when we normally meet). The meeting will
begin at noon. The Director, Leslie Kane will give an
overview of the facility and its holdings. These
include some 500 yizkor books, which, as we all know,
can be vital for researching the history of one's shtetl.

An additional attraction will be the showing of a
special documentary at 2:30 entitled "Power of
Humanity" about Nicholas Winton. In 1938 Winton was a
30 year-old London stockbroker. He visited Prague that
year, was able to rescue some 669 Czech Jewish
children and get them to London. Their parents were
not so fortunate and perished in the Holocaust.
Winton, called the "Schindler of England," was
knighted by the Queen in 2003. The documentary is part
of Northern California's Kindertransport Association
chapter meeting that day.

I strongly urge people to car-pool or take BART. For
car-pooling information, contact me at
"jfrankel@lmi.net" and I will try to match up rides.
Otherwise please use BART.

The nearest BART station is Embarcadero on Market
Street. Exit the station and walk down Market towards
Steuart Street. No. 121 is a multi-story, brick
buildi
