JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Revised Skala web site
#general
First, we are very pleased to announce that there have been extensive
additions to the Skala Podolskaya web site. the site is at http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/SkalaPodol/ to see all the additions, go to the what's new link near the top of the page. this will take you to many other pages. or scroll down to see all the links on the main skala page. We are deeply indebted to Max Heffler and Helene Kenvin for all their work. Jewishgen recently gave us permission to directly access the web site and make changes, additions, etc. We are very grateful to Susana Leistner Bloch, the suchostaw regional coordinator, and Ed Rosenbaum for all their wonderful work over the past few years in managing the web site. We are also very grateful to Shelley Pollero for her guidance on the transistion. We will still be linked to the suchostaw site, but just have direct access to making changes. With all the new material, we felt it made more sense to make the additions directly. Max has done a brilliant job of creating the web pages, and Helene has inspired a lot of the contributions, the ideas for the additions, and for the general design of the pages. we have received many compliments for her photos of the weisenthal family, which will be published in the next issue of the Galitizianer. see http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/SkalaPodol/Wiesenthal_relatives_perish.html you can also reach this on the main page by going to "Relatives >from Skala who perished in the Holocaust." We have many more additions that we will be making over the next few weeks. And we hope that we have just started a trend with our group of skala researchers. We continue to be very grateful to Max Mermelstein, president, Skala Benevolent Society, for the incredible number of contributions that he has made for many years to preserving the memory of Skala and of the victims of the holocaust. On another note, many of you may know this, but I just recently learned that the yad vashem central data base of shoah victims is online http://names.yadvashem.org/wps/portal/IY_HON_Entrance for skala, there are 1000 victims listed. I learned several things about my family >from the listings in this data base. This database has allowed families who didn't know of each other's existence to make connections. Dear Genners,
At first I send to you all my best wishes for a Happy Chanukka festival and a peacefull and good New Year 2006 ! I have a question: I tried to got informations about my late paternal family (GRINBERG and HERSCOBVICI >from RAMNICU SARAT,Region of Buzau) >from the State Archiv in Buckarest and in Buzau. I had send three letter's a long time ago, but I don't get any answer. I'm looking for the death document of my late greatgrandfather Pincu GRINBERG. He worked in Ramnicu Sarat as a chamber painter and chasan and in 1910 he died by an accident by work in Ramnicu Sarat. Pincu GRINBERG (b. 1870, d. 1910) was married ca. 1894/95 with Tiva Pincu HERSCOVICI (b. 1877, d. 1935/1941/42 in Ramnicu Sarat). Both had two childrens: Emilian/Emil alias Smuil Pincu GRINBERG (b. 1895/98, d. 1916/17 in the region of Ramnicu Sarat) who was a romanian soldier during WW I and was shot down >from a tree by an german or austrian-hungarian sniper during the bloody battles in the region of Ramnicu Sarat. >from him I also search his death document. Emilians sister, was my late grandmother Frima(Fanny) PINCU GRINBERG (b. 1899 in Ramnicu Sarat, d. 1986 in Lahr/Germany). She was married 1921 in Biesenthal, Mark Brandenburg/Germany with the smith Ewald Ferdinand Dupuis, who was as a prussian dragon soldier 1917/18 with his prussian dragon regiment in Ramnicu Sarat. HOw can I got all the birth, marriage and death documents of my late ancestors ???? Best regards -- Robert Dupuis Berlin/Germany

The Cyrillic indices in the LDS Belchatow's microfilms were indexed by
volunteers prior to the creation of Shtetl CO-OPs. Some other towns have produced or are now creating finding aids for films containing records for their towns. Indexing of Belchatow films was completed before this began. However there is a webpage on JRI-Poland that is helpful to review before researching family in the Belchatow films. See: http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/town/belchatow_txt.htm Indexing is complete for the Belchatow films listed here in this early "inventory." Many CO-OP groups later also indexed more of the data by reviewing the actual records themselves, adding to what exists in ledgers' indices created by the Polish scribes. Belchatow has slowly been doing this for some of the films. However, it would be very helpful for researchers to have a finding aid for each of the Belchatow films. As many of you know, I am registration chair of the International IAJGS Jewish Genealogy Conference and cannot be involved with this now. However, having this finding aid for Belchatow films is a wonderful idea and not very difficult to do. If you are interested in volunteering to create an inventory for a particular Bellchatow film or films, please contact me and I will send you a sample of what was done for another town. Once a finding aid is complete, we can link it to the results page. If your interest is Belchatow, please also see updated Belchatow Yizkor Book translations and the Belchatow ShtetLink web pages listed under my signature. If you plan to attend the conference, please let me know since we will be having a Belchatow Birds-of-a-Feather meeting. LARG (Lodz Area Research Group) members will be notified within the next 2 months about a LARG meeting to be held at the Conference. Have a Happy Chanukah!!! I was able to identify these as Jewish by the names of the witnesses which I recognized >from previous records--there are no longer Hebrew signatures. With the help of the index obtained >from searching JRI-Poland I was able to find most of the SADOWSKI records. However there was one record listed (SADOWSKA, Sura Mindlja - 1870 - D - Akt 11) which I was unable to locate because the Jewish group of records began at 1871. There was another grouping of records after the Jewish group. Akt 11 in what I thought would be the death records didn't look right to me but I decided to print it none-the-less. I've had it translated and can now confirm that this isn't the correct record. I'm sending this for 2 reasons...first so that anyone else looking at these films will know to continue beyond the initial records; secondly I'm hoping that someone else may have used this film as well as 1713996 & 1713997 (which seem to have similar issues in how they are organized) and can give me some guidance for finding the correct records. Thanks as always, Hazel Sandow Boon Hamilton, ON, Canada

Re: help finding litv. immigrant who left chicago for SA
#southafrica
Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>
Dear Susan:
Getting to South Africa is the easy part, it is the finding out what happened once he got there that is difficult. The most likely scenario for his travel itinerary is that he would have taken a train to New York, caught a ship to England and then caught a ship from there to South Africa. Usually, you would look up the passenger in thePoor Jews' Temporary Shelter Database, but he does not appear to be there. If he was looking for gold, he would have gone to the Transvaal to participate in the Witwatersrand Gold Rush in 1886 which produced almost half of the gold ever found on earth. Many men went to find their fortunes including one's who had also participated in the California gold rush. Very often, they did not have relatives to go to; some made it, others did not, and returned to their countries of origin or moved on. Another factor which caused some of the gold rush miners to move on was the advent of the Boer War in 1899. However, your great grandfather may have stayed during that time and joined up on either side of the war. An interesting 1911 article on the Transvaal gives an idea of what the country was like: "TRANSVAAL." LoveToKnow 1911 Online Encyclopedia. © 2003, 2004 LoveToKnow. http://61.1911encyclopedia.org/T/TR/TRANSVAAL.htm I would suggest you also look at the JewishGen InfoFiles on South Africa which are located at: http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/#SouthAfrica This will help you to determine what resources might be available for you to use to find info on your great grandfather. It would be good to know when he returned to the U.S. Also, you never said if your great grandfather abandoned his family or divorced his wife. This situation might provide records for you to check. Good luck!!! Ann Rabinowitz annrab@bellsouth.net
