They dreamed of building a red Jewish homeland in collaboration with a
Soviet regime. I believe a handful of Jews >from America even went there.
It would indeed be interesting to hear how Nikolai Borodulin presents this.

Let me clear something up:

I just saw the announcement of this talk at a Queens Library branch in NYC.
I simply posted it as a public service. I have no interest in the area or
knowledge of it beyond rudimentry.

But for those of you who live in or near Queens you can check for the
activities on their website http://www.queenslibrary.org. Queens has a very
large Uzbeki Jewish community as well as Russian Jewish (not to mention
large communities >from all over and every background) so they are always
having something that might be of interest (culturally) to some of us.

Lithuania Vital Records Database is now LIVE #general

Howard Margol

In yesterday's issue of the Jewishgen Digest, the following message appeared.

We are proud to announce that the database of Lithuanian vital records is
now live on JewishGen... over 9,000 birth, marriage, divorce and death
records.

These can be searched via the JewishGen Lithuania Database at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Lithuania

The introductory material for this database is at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Lithuania/VitalRecs.htm

Howard Margol>>>

In my original message sent to the Digest, the name of my co-worker on the
database, Aaron Roetenberg, was included along with my name.
Unfortunately, although Aaron's name was on my post, Aaron's name was left
off.

This has caused me some embarrassment and I apologize to Aaron for the
deletion of his name.

Saying where you live.. #general

In response to saying where you live.....
I am Jewish and live in Salt Lake City. On the
occasions when I have posted to the JG Digest,
and said I live in Salt Lake, I got very few
responses or people wrote and asked if I am doing
Mormon research and suggest that I should use the
FHL which I am fortunate to be able to do often.
When I omit my location I get "tons" of responses
with very helpful information. I no longer list
my location.

Cantor Israel Kupfer (Cooper) #general

Stein Lewis

Israel KUPFER was a well known cantor in New York during the late
19th and early 20th centuries. He later changed the spelling of his
name to Cooper. He was married to Fayge (Fanny) ENGLISZER, a sister
of my ggf. I had been under the impression that he was >from Romania,
but in the 1900 Census he reported that his place of birth and that
of his parents was Russia. He and Fanny had seven surviving children,
many of whom were either theatrical performers, agents or managers.
He apparently died before the 1910 census, in which his children show
his place of birth as Russian Poland. The low and behold in the 1920
census, his youngest son, Joseph states that his father was born in
Romania and that his mother tongue was Romania. I have been unable to
find a manifest showing the emigration of the family, which was
either in 1883 or 1886 depending on which census one believes.

I know that Israel Kupfer (COOPER) lived on Madison Street in 1900
and that he chanted at the First Romanian American Synagogue as well
as at the Kalawarie Synagogue. He performed the marriage of my
grandparents at the Congregation Sons of Israel at 13 - 15 Pike
Street at which time he showed his residence to be 3 Rutgers Street.
I have also found references to him in the "American Scene" which was
published >from time to time in the early editions of Commentary. I
also have found references to several of his sons in advertisements
and obituaries in the New York Times.

I am hoping that someone with a knowledge of the synagogues of the
Lower East Side and of theatrical in period >from 1900 to 1940 can
provide information about the family.
I am most particularly interested in knowing if there is any
information about Fanny Cooper.

Searching: HOROVITZ & ROSENBLOOM families - England #general

Michael Trapunsky <trapunsky@...>

Hi,

I'm looking for any descendants of Chana Yentel OGUS (born January 8, 1856
in Lithuania) and her husband Chaim Mendel HOROVITZ (born around 1847 in
Lithuania).

As far as I know, their children were:
Barney HOROVITZ - birth date unknown
Kaufman HOROVITZ - birth date unknown
Mendel HOROVITZ - birth date unknown
Devorah HOROVITZ - born about 1884

I'm not sure if the children were born in Lithuania or in England but I do
know that Devorah (and probably her siblings a swell) passed away in
England (dates unknown).

I am also not sure what Kaufman's and Mendel's English names were.

Devorah HOROVITZ married Saul ROSENBLOOM (date unknown) and they had at
least two children:
Simon ROSENBLOOM
Sadie ROSENBLOOM - married Michael CURRY and had a son named Basil who
lived in the USA.

I know this isn't much to go on, but if anyone knows of this family I would
love to hear back >from you.

Thanks very much,
