Katino/Katina/Katinas family in Lithuania + Linkuva/Laukuva #lithuania

I'm researching traces of any Katino/Katina family in Lithuania. I have
found the names of Shoah victims named KATINAS >from Laukuva/linkuva;
Lithuania.Here are my questions :
Could someone confirm that Laukuva and Linkuva is really the same town? >>

Laukuva (55 37/ 22 14) is 75.1 miles (120.8 km) SW of Linkuva (56 05/ 23
59).

<< is it certain that KATINAS and KATINA are two versions of a same
name? >>

I think you can safely assume that KATINAS and KATINA are the same
surname.

HART - emigrated US to Netherlands #general

Irene Newhouse <einew@...>

Some of my relatives, Andrew (Andries Hartog) HART, his wife Sarah nee
ROSENBAUM and their daughter Johanna left the US for the Netherlands some
time after the 1910 census. They all died in the Holocaust, and the family
is listed on the Dutch Holocaust Memorial website. I'd like to know how to
find out when the moved back to the Netherlands - Andrew HART was born in
Groningen, his wife in Germany & their daughter in Boston.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Census deciphering #general

Aaron M Fink <aaronfink@...>

Hi All:
I need help deciphering a 1900 census, please:
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=7665
On line 83:
1. There is something written on top of the first name I cannot figure out.
It seems like an "x" over something else.
2. Under the "citizenship", "naturalization" question, it looks like there
is an "al". Does anyone know what that means?
3. I cannot make out his profession. If this is who I am looking for, it
possibly should say "butcher". Also, there is something written on top of
his profession that I also cannot make out.
4. The head of the house (same line-83) should be Joseph (Josef?), however
it does not look like that is what is scribbled. All of the other data
(dates, wife, children, etc) match up. Can anyone make heads or tails or
his first name...can anyone see how it could say Joseph? Joseph's middle
name is Isaac, which is what it looks like is written.

Please respond privately: aaronfink@ycgonline.com

Thank you very much.

Have a great day!

Do you have a Napoleon 1812 story? #general

Nancy Holden

Do you have a Napoleon 1812 story?

Roots-Key, the journal of JGSLA is collecting information about the
Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812. We hope to be able to plot the route
from Kovno to Moscow with your stories. Napoleon's army covered a broad
front stretched north and south through Kovno, Vilna, Svensionys, Vitebsk,
Mogilev and Minsk, bordered by the Pripet Marshes on the south. . .crossing
the Nieman, the Dneiper, and the Berezino Rivers. . .with major battles in
Smolensk, Borisov and Borodino. Every village and villager was affected.
Construction, demolition, pillage, disease and death threatened every shtetl
and town in his path.

If you have a story, no matter how insignificant or obscure it sounds, we
would like to hear it. If you would like to participate in this JGSLA
project, please contact us.

The Leibie Gafanowitz referred to by Richard Newman on 28 February was at
Hasolelim but unfortunately passed away in 1995 as a result of a tragic car
accident in Israel. I think there may be no connection to the Gafanowitz
mentioned ny Anne Rabinowitz. Leibie A'H was my wife's uncle.

at least a year and half.
Dear Ester,
You could find the 1958 revision list for Smorgon on line; The all
Lithuania database;
http://www.jewishgen.org/Litvak/searchald.htm
There are about 40; SHUTSKEVER/ SHUTSKOVER- some are registered as
cousins of head of households with other last names.Every SHUTSKEVER/
SHUTSKOVER >from the Lithuanian revision list is >from Smorgon.
There was one Mordechai Aharon SHUTSKEVER in 1903 in Vilna and in the
1915 vasia vilna data; Abraham , son of Gertz Sutskever and Mordechai
son of Meir Sutskever.
On the Vilna ghetto list you could find some of your relatives;
SUCKEVER, Abram 1913 Strasuno 1
SUCKEVER, Fryda 1907 Strasuno 1
I found 30 names on the Yad Vashem list. All but one had origin in the
area between Minsk and Vilnius. Most were born in Smorgon. If you want
I could send you a detailed report of the testimony.

Jewish genealogy awards - "Four Questions" and some reminders #courland #latvia

Renee Steinig <rsteinig@...>

It's the time of year when thoughts turn to Passover -- and to the
awards our community bestows for achievements in Jewish genealogy.
So I pose these "Four Questions" to all of you:

1) What coveted award have Warren Blatt, Stanley Diamond, Susan
King, and Miriam Weiner all received?

2) For what achievement have Yad Vashem, Alexander Beider,
Stephen Morse, and the JewishGen Yizkor Book Project been
recognized?

3) Why and when have kudoes gone to David Fox and to the JGSs of
Los Angeles, Montreal, and Ottawa.

4) The JGSs of Greater Philadelphia, New York, Palm Beach County,
and Los Angeles have been honored for excellence in what area?

For answers, see the lists of distinquished winners of IAJGS's
past Achievement Awards at www.iajgs.org/awards_files/awards.html

Since 1998, the Jewish genealogy community has acknowledged
important contributions by individuals and groups with IAJGS
Achievement Awards, presented annually by the International
Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. Thank you to all
who have already submitted nominations for the 2006 awards. For
those who haven't completed their nominations yet, here are some
reminders:

o Awards are given in four categories:

Lifetime Achievement Award

Outstanding Contribution to Jewish Genealogy via the
Internet, Print or Electronic Product

Outstanding Programming or Project that Advances the
Objectives of Jewish Genealogy

Outstanding Publication by a Member Organization of IAJGS

o The Call for Nominations appears at
www.iajgs.org/awards_files/awardnomincall.html
Please be sure to click on each award category for criteria
for that award.

o Although nominations must come to the Awards Committee >from
an IAJGS member organization (www.iajgs.org/Member-Index.htm),
we encourage JewishGenners to be part of the process. Please
look at the lists of past recipients and ask yourself a fifth
question: "Who else belongs here?" If you have benefited >from
a wonderful project, internet resource, publication, or
programming that isn't listed, let your JGS know and propose a
nomination -- this year if you and they can hurry, or for 2007.

o Societies are welcomed -- in fact, urged -- to nominate their
own publications, projects, and projects. Don't be shy!

o Nominations for the 2006 IAJGS Achievement Awards should be
submitted by April 1, 2006. We encourage you to get your 2006
nominations in and to start thinking about next year's awards
as well.

o Awards will be announced and presented on Thursday, August 17,
at the 26th IAJGS International Conference on Jewish Genealogy
in New York City.
