Jewish cemeteries in Poland #general

Alexander Sharon

Dear Genenrs,

A lovely website dedicated to the Jewish cemeteries in Poland is located on
this page.

http://www.kirkuty.xip.pl/indexang.htm

As this site author said in the introduction:

Jewish cemeteries are very special places. Hidden somewhere out of the way,
covered with high grass, they intrigue with their atmosphere and delight
with finesse of making Hebrew inscriptions, which were laboriously forged by
unknown craftsmen - artists. It is worth remembering that Jewish cemeteries
are not seldom the oldest monuments of material culture in a particular town
or a region.

The website www.kirkuty.xt.pl

- created by a person of non-Jewish ancestry - is an attempt of presentation
some Jewish cemeteries in a form of a photo gallery, enriched with general
historic information. The authors hope that this guide will inspire to
visiting these places and will draw attention to marks of pre-war presence
of the community of Polish Jews, now disappearing >from our landscape.

Tel Aviv Chevrah Kadishah Search Request #general

hekenvin@...

I do not have Hebrew fonts, so cannot use the search engine of the Tel Aviv
chevrah kadishah societies at <http://www.kadisha.biz/ >

I would be grateful if someone would search for my great-great-great
grandparents, Moishe Froyim (Moshe Efraim) and Chana WIESENTHAL.

According to family lore, they made aliyah in the 19th century and lived
in Yafa. Judging by when newborn babies were named after them, Moshe Efraim
died 1879-1880 and Chana in 1883. In 1980, I visited several of the chevrah
kadishah societies in Tel Aviv, but was unable to locate their graves.

Please respond privately.

With thanks,
Helene Kenvin

FRIEDMAN fm Szalo Szend #general

Vivian Kahn

You are probably looking for Szalonna, which is in northeastern
Hungary in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen county. In 1877 it was in the
Szendro district of Borsod county. This was, and still is, part of
Hungary. According to info I found on the internet, Szalonna is a
small place with about 1,066 inhabitants iat the southern edge of the

Szalonna hills between the Rudabanya and Szalonna hills. It is
situated along main road No. 27, 18 km north of Edeleny.

Check the All Hungary Database and the FHL website to see which
records are available. Even if records have not been filmed, it may
be possible to obtain information by writing to the Borsod county
archives. As of 1877, Jews >from Szalonna worshipped in Szendro so
that's likely where to look for records.

Hello,
My great-grandfather William FRIEDMAN was born in Szalo Szend,
Hungary, in 1858. Was this part of Hungary in 1858? Also, are there
any census records available yet for this area? I have the names of
his mother and father, He came to USA in 1902 >from Miskolc - does
anyone know of a particular incident at that time that would have
driven him out?

LiquidMirror <arnold.rabinowitz@...>

Recently had an old (1910 or 20's) letter translated >from Hebrew (so
spellings could be off)(Kurents area ?) and here's what I think I
deduced:

1. Letter is written or dictated by Leah SKLAR (married to David SKLAR)

2. To her sister Rochl (whose husband (ZUSSMAN) stated on her death
cert that her father's name was Aaron SKOLNICK)
3. Leah had six children
Yitzchak(M)-lost or disappeared in the war
Yehudis(F)-married & emigrated to USA
Zvulun(?)-living near parents
Arken(M)-(called him Swindler) emigrated to USA
Chana(F)-married to ASHER KAPLAN and living near parents
Melach(M)-married & emigrated to USA

Leah states that YEHUDIS,ARKEN & MELACH "should write me a letter and
tell me how they are if they have a drop of Yiddishkeit"

Does anything tie in to your family history?

More or less two weeks ago I received a mail asking me about a person who's

The picture was >from year 1921 about the Talmud Torah Ohel Moshe Building in
Kamenetz Litovsk and Noaj Wiener was between other five persons.
I made a mistake and deleted the message and therefore I couldn't answer the
mail giving the information I have.
I wait that the person that wrote to me will forgive me and send the message
