Re: Searching the American Jewish Year Book #lithuania

Jerry Zeisler <jzeisler@...>

Although the index to the AJYB is searchable, the index is not perfect. My
great-grandfather, Rabbi Joseph Zeisler, is listed in the 1922-1923 book on
page 103 (Appendix IV, Necrology), but there is no listing for his entry in
the index. I've tested this with several names and it appears that there is
an index listing ONLY if there is a bio associated with the name. The index
doesn't cover a name in the Appendices if that's the only entry.

Therefore, don't be discouraged if the name you are searching for doesn't
appear in the Index. Search in the books for the name in the appropriate
years.

I have been asked to expand on my comment about the searchable nature of the
American Jewish Year Book which is online at www.ajcarchives.org . Each
volume of the AJYB is in a searchable PDF format. Once opened, the volume
can be searched for any text of your choosing within Adobe Reader by
selecting "Search", entering your search criteria and letting Adobe Reader
do the rest. Just be advised you must have the exact spelling for this to
work. The spellings I have encountered for towns of interest to Litvaks
include Vilna, Kovno and Gedrovitch [this one was new to me]. It is useful
to do a search on Vilna and Kovno even if these are not your towns of
interest, because in many cases, other towns are listed as [town, Kovno
gub.] or something similar. A search on Kovno and Vilna would therefore
capture most instances of other Lithuanian towns.

Hello
As a new subscriber, I have to say thank you already for the data you have
been able to collect and also with the help of Logan Kleinwaks I have been
able to find out more about my Polish ancestry.

I am an Italian naturalised British having lived here for the past 40++
years and I am surprised that you have no databases for the Italian Jews who
also perished in the Holocaust. If I am correct there have been over 4000
who have been transported or killed in Italy.

In researching the fate of my grandparents >from my father side who died in
Auschwitz, I travelled to Bologna and found that in the area, there was a
distinct presence before the war but now the numbers are so low that the
Bologna community is struggling in re-asserting their presence.

Over the years the Italian Government in a gesture of reparation has funded
or partially funded museums, memorial plaques etc.

Synagogues in Turin, Bologna and Florence have been re-built, so perhaps
some research may be initiated to help the likes of me who have relied so
far on the good heart of local people.

I will be interested to read any comments on the subject.

I'm searching for the family of my grandmother RIESEL family, which
lived in Berlin until the 1930's (then part of the family came to
Israel and the other part went to Brazil). I know that the name of my
grandmother's grandfather was Joseph RIESEL.

I would be thankful to anyone who can go to the Weissensee cemetery in
Berlin and search the card catalog in the office at the entrance for
Riesel family.

Best regards,

Hello,
I recently found a photo of my uncle taken in Poland around the time
of the Holocaust. He is wearing a cap with a Jewish Star and what looks like
a heart under it. On his arm is a band which says Police and then there is
what looks like a large Jewish star with a word written over it. All of the
images of ghetto police have armbands, but none of them have the word police
written in English. Can anyone give me more information about this picture?

Thanks,

Hello All

I am helping Herbert Lindow (who does not have Internet access) search
for his cousin Brian GO:DSMITH. Born Bruno GOLDSCHMIDT on 24 Nov. 1926
in Hamburg, Germany, Bruno and his brother (Solomon) Robert GOLDSCHMIDT
made their way to England in the Fall of 1938, possibly on a
Kindertransport.

Bruno Goldschmidt changed his name to Brian Goldsmith. He joined the
British Army in May 1944, and became a Naturalized British Citizen in
1947. It is possible that Brian Goldsmith may have emigrated to Israel,
Kenya or Uganda. Any information about Brian or his descendants would be greatly
appreciated.

Descendants of David DEUTSCH (Ohel Dawid) #rabbinic

jacob and jamina <jaronew@...>

Dear RavSIGgers

I'm looking for descendants of David DEUTSCH (born 1756; died in
1830 at Novo Mesto (Waag-Neustadt) the author of "Ohel Dawid") the
son of Menachem Mendel DEUTSCH and Reizel Bat Petach.

I know he was married to Johebed and had several children among them
Moshe Chaim, Jecheskel, and at least 2 daughters of which one
married Meir EISENSTADT ( the son of (Jehuda Leib EISENSTADT).

I believe that Israel Zecharia DEUTSCH ( died 1921 near
Nyiregyhaza), was his grandson or g.grandson. I am the g.g.son of
Israel Zecharia. I am missing the link between David DEUTSCH and
Israel Zecharia. I have been told that Meir Naftali Zwi DEUTSCH was
the father of Israel Zecharia but I am not sure if Meir Naftali Zwi
was a son or grandson of David DEUTSCH. Any information would be
greatly appreciated.
