What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?

How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?

Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?

Hello again fellow genners!
After the help you gave me last week some successes fell upon us and of course they raised new questions After 4 years of my searching everywhere for it, one of you found my family that seemed to have vanished in 1910 - the census taker had written HYMAS instead of HYMOFF but there they all were, at a different address. Thanks again to Yehudah - We'd been looking all over and not found them!! My ggm's first husband went by the name of WATERS but it seems he was really WASSERZUG. Their son was born in 1885 and called Simon Waters or Simon Hymoff depending. Would anyone see if an Adeline WASSERZUG shows up on any search engine at commercial sites (I live in Spain and cannot access any at any library - even if we had one they don't have those services here). I will be checking the free sites myself, so please don't bother. What would be fantastic would be her marriage record to Mr. Wasserzug/Waters that might have more information on her. I'm anxious to find out where in Poland she was from! The marriage could have taken place in NY or in Massachusetts around 1884. Her marriage record to my ggf states "mn Zettock" and if that is "Maiden name" we have a new mystery to deal with. Any suggestions on that would also be very welcome! For those of you who are interested the "F" means Fairfield. The abbrevation list is in the very beginning of the directory just before the "A's" I firmly believe that the two people listed are our ancestors. What are the odds of those two given names showing up in a record together without being related? Leopold RING married Regina KISH in 1900, so I believe Leopold was setting up his own home for he and his wife, therefore he was rem. (removed) to Bridgeport. Leopold was Clementine's brother. As for Clemetine not using her married name DZIEKIEWICZ, we have learned that her married surname "can" mean RING in English! Thanks to all of you! I have a bunch of Ulman/ Ullmans in my Worcester MA Grace-Pelletz-Jaffe Family History and Tree that may or may interest the Ullman family in question. They came >from Kamajai/ Rokiskis/ Kaunas/ Riga and Vilnius. There are some famous actors who are Ullmans, though probably not related-- Liv Ullmann, Tracey Ullman, Ricky Ullman (born Raviv Ullman, Israeli), and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.(Douglas Ullman) from the old Jewish Encyclopedia (1897) The Ulman family originated in thetown of Ulm (where Einstein was born) but moved to Guenzburg, and adopted the name Gunzberg, or Ginzberg and some branches (Ulma, Ulm and Ullman) of the family call themselves "Ulma-Guenzburg. There is on record a lawsuit instituted by Baer Guenzburg of Grodno against a Jewish family of that city who had adopted the same name under the decree of 1804 (Maggid, "Toledot Mishpehot Ginzburg," p. 239, St. Petersburg, 1899). The court sustained the right of Jewish families to adopt any name they chose, and the number of Guenzburg families accordingly increased. Etta Grace Ulman The descendents of “Charles Bezalel the First” are Yonkel (Jacob), Lozer Jaffe, Saie, Zelig, Mende Jaffe, Rive Gittel, Faige, Etta, Avraham Yehuda, plus a large family of Ulmans, Sniders, and Feldmans in Worcester. 1. She leaves 2 sons: Abraham and Benjamin Snider, and 2 daughters, Hazel (wife of William T. Silver) and Ethel, wife of Max Chervin. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Bessie Pulde, 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was born in Russia and was the daughter of Mendell and Riva (Schwartzberg) Snider and lived in Worcester more than 65 years. (The last names don’t look right. Thank you for all your messages. >from all your replies I gather it was more to do with personal rather than trend reasons - I suspected it may have something to do with early Soviet fashion, etc. As a matter of fact the boy's sister *was* raised in that new family, who also had their children (2 boys as far as I know). *But*, the main question remains: did anyone come accross those orphanages in Berdichev of those days? Daniel [Aser?] WEINBERGER arrived in NY >from Pancevo-Banat/Hungary. According to Ellis Island data a Gyoza Wainberger >from Pancsova arrived on Dec. 1913. According to ship's manifest the name he gave as closest Relative in home town was Vilmos Weinberger . Vilmos was my husband's grandfather who perished in Beograd in 1941 and brother of Daniel. Their Father Mor Weinberger died in Pancevo in 1905, thus Vilmos became responsible for all 8 siblings. I assume Daniel is Gyoza , nevertheless I could not find any one in 1920 and 1930 census that fit information. Coming to NY in August, I would like to work on this thread. Any suggestions?
