Louis COHEN [born abt 1795] of London, his family and servants #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Micheline Guttmann writes in response to my posting:
"Effectively, this family COHEN is a rich and well
known family. Louis was the son of Joseph COHEN
(1774-1838) and Marian JOACHIM who married on 29 Feb.
1796 at the Great Synagogue, London. His wife was
Rebecca Floretta Asher KEYSER, daughter of Asker
KEYSER. Joseph was the son of Levie Joshua COHEN
(1740-1808), born on Amersfoort, NL and Fanny DIAMANT
SCHLEIFER, daughter of Joseph. Lionel Louis COHEN
married Luisa Emily MERTON (family of bankers)."

It is useful to know what affluent background Louis
came >from - I suspected it was >from the Netherlands
and that the family was well-established. This however
does not exempt it >from the transcription errors which
mar the England and Wales censuses. Even this
illustrious family had many errors which I have
corrected. Hopefully, the corrections will soon be on
line. It is hard to find the family members:

Floretta is called Loretta in the 1851 census - and I
only knew she was Floretta >from the 1841 readable
census transcript. Sons: Lionel is Leonal; Isaac Louis
is Isaac Lome; Nathan Louis is Nathan Loay, and two
daughters are called Adall and Allen!

In 1841, this Louis COHEN family lived in Blackheath
and six servants are listed here too. There are two
other children bracketed with the family Priscilla and
Jettie??? MOSES{S} aged 12 and 9. Presumably these are
relatives - they are British-born and they could give
further leads to the genealogy. Michelle tells us that
Floretta was nee KEYSER. This all fits in with a
wealth Moses KEYSER aged 30 [merchant] living nearby
in Blackheath with his young wife and three children
plus three servants. One, Leah HYAM is probably
Jewish.

In 1851, a Dutch-born H. KEYSER [born 1791] designated
as sister, lives with a wealthy ENTHOVEN family
[Dutch-born] in London. They also had many servants.

My main interest was to highlight the number of
servants this family had and how this continued
throughout the generations and amongst other extended-
family members. Unfortunately I could not find
continuity amongst the servants - that would have been
an extra bonus. Nor were many of them of evident
Jewish origin.

We often look at the genealogy of wealthy/famous
families but rarely look at their servants. The
censuses give us a wonderful insight into the
households and what they must have been like. For
COHEN-seekers too - the presence of servants will give
you an indication if you have the right family amongst
the multitude. In my case, I would look for a family
with no servants.

Dear Minneapolis Genners,

I have a 1904 Minneapolis death certificate for
Moses WEINBERG; he is buried in the O.B.A.
Cemetery according to his death certificate. A
bit of research told me there were two OBA
cemeteries, or at least two OBA Cemetery
Associations. They are: Minneapolis Lodge OBA
Cemetery Association and Hennepin County OBA
Lodge Association. I have to assume these were
burial societies as there seem to be no
cemeteries with the OBA name. Is there someone
who can point me in the right direction so that I
can locate his grave? Also, what does O. B. A.
stand for?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Re: Eisenach ship photo #general

Harry Dodsworth <af877@...>

Joan Engel (joan.engel@gmail.com) asked about the ship Eisenach
which left Bremen on 14 May 1913 and arrived in Baltimore 9 Jun 1913.

The Eisenach was built in 1908 and belonged to North German Lloyd.
She sailed on the South American run to Brazil and Argentina.
The ship was interned in Pernambuco on the outbreak of WW1 and
became owned in Brazil. Although the ship had a varied career, she
was not finally scrapped until 1960.
The voyage to Baltimore in 1913 was her only sailing to North America.
[Summarized >from Norddeutschr Lloyd, Bremen vol.1 by Edwin Drechsel]

There is a picture of the Eisenach in "Ships of our Ancestors" by
Michael Anuta. The picture is credited to the Peabody Museum at Salem, MA.
Anuta is not always accurate, particularly when there were several ships
with the same name - NDL had two later Eisenachs. I checked the picture
and it looks correct for a ship built in 1908.

Help with possible NYC/LI address needed #general

Judith27

Dear JewishGendom,
I recently was told that in the HIAS fond at the State Lithuanian
Archvies there is a record that a Celia Shapiro sent money in 1925 to a Sura
Zurnamer living in Siauliai.
Neither of these women is known to me, and trying to find the right
Celia Shapiro in America is proving to be quite challenging.
I have tried typing in the address I received of "9912-136th Ave,
Long Island" into several online mapping sites such as Mapquest using the street
address plus several alternative place locations such as a generic Queens,
Brooklyn, and Long Island, as well as specific place names which might have a
136th Ave such as Jamaica, Rosedale, Laurelton, and even Long Island City. But
nothing seems to work.
Is anyone familiar with an address of 9912-136th Ave somewhere on
Long Island and can suggest where it might be now???

Baron Hugo WATTMANN #galicia

I would appreciate suggestions >from anyone on this list on how to determine
whether Wattmann Family archives exist and if so where they are located.
Baron Hugo Wattman was the owner of a small (Galician) village I am
researching, Stary Dzikow. This I learned >from the 1929 Polish Business
Directory. A relative of mine, Leibush Just who lived between about 1840
and the early 1900s worked for Wattmann. I've looked through Gayle Riley's
references and did not find Wattmann mentioned. I googled the Wattmann name
and found under titled Polish nobility the hyphenated name,
Wattmann-Maelcamp--Beaulieu. The name is also linked to a famous Austrian
surgeon who lived between 1780 and 1860. All tips are most welcome.

Szeged Hungary - girls' business school graduation photo 1928-29 #general

Susan Fifer <suef@...>

I recently purchased a graduation photo of a girls' business/commercial
school in Szeged, Hungary dated 1928-29. This would have made the dates of
birth for the girls around 1910. About half the names seem Jewish. A full
list is below. I have scanned the photo and am happy to email a copy (say
whether you want the 700k version or the 2MB version) to anyone who thinks
they might have a relative on the photo. Please don't ask for any more
information about the individuals or the school as I don't have anything and
am not researching my own family in Hungary.

Livia ROKACH - Looking for her Relatives #general

N. Rosenberg <rose4@...>

I have in my possession three original photos of Livia ROKACH that I would
like to pass on to her family.

Livia Rokach was the daughter of Esther (daughter of Chaya and Yeshayahu
EPSTEIN) and Israel ROKACH (son of Rachel and Shimon). Her father Israel
ROKACH was Mayor of Tel Aviv >from 1936 - 1952 and Minister of Interior under
Prime Minister Moshe Sharett. She was a journalist and a reporter for Israel
Radio, in Italy.

In the early 1980s, Livia Rokach translated excerpts >from Moshe Sharett's
diary and inserted them into her book: "Israel's Sacred Terrorism ". This
was an extremely provocative book which has been widely used as propaganda
by Palestinian activists. Livia Rokach was found dead in her Rome hotel room
in the 1980's.

If you are a family member of Livia Rokach and are interested in the photos,
please write to me.

Re: French spelling of towns in Russia #general

Eve Line Blum <eve.line.blum@...>

Vselyub (or Wsielub) is certainly the right spelling for "Cheloupe",
which is a very near French pronunciation of that name. One has to
remind that in those days, there were no birth certificate to show
when people arrived in the French camp of Drancy, and those who had
to write down the names of the arriving new inmates had to write it
how they heard it, as they could. Moreover, many people who arrived
didn't even know how to read or write.

Vselyub was known in Polish as Wsielub, pron. [vsheh loob], hence French
Cheloupe.

Russian capital Peterburg (St Petersburg) was renamed at the begining of WWI
to Petrograd (Russian for town of Peter) due to the wartime antiGerman
sentiments.

(Similarly, during same period, Canadian town Berlin (located in Ontario
Province) was renamed Kitchener).

BTW, Petrograd was again renamed Leningrad, shortly after Lenin's death in
1924, and again re-re-re named to St (Saint) Petersburg few years ago.
