JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Many roads are leading to Rom, you can use
Michele Sankar's method, by using search engines that required accents. from the Hungarian pages you can pick the wanted letter & accent, mark it and copy and paste it into the text / search box etc.. or >from Milton Hubsher by taking the Hungarian Alphabet and marking and picking the desired character >from there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_alphabet The different Window programm offer an other way with the whole character set, including Greck, Hebrew etc. characters too. In the US Windows take Start > Programs > System Tools > Character Map in the German version it is similar procedure Start > Programme > Systemprogramme > Zeichentabelle here you can choose any desired character copy/paste it in your text or look the way with ALT Key and which nummeric key give you the desired result. You can minimize the Map and you can even copy it on the display for future use. You can even write a short text with each of the specific character with your favorite wordprocessor save it and you can use it any time when you need a Hungarian character. Best regards Gabor Hirsch Switzerland

Newfield from Magyar
#hungary
LJTRS@...
Hello,
I joined this group today because my husband's great grandparents, who I always thought came >from Germany, in fact listed Magyar as their hometown on an early census. I just discovered that and was told by the German sig people to join the Hungarian group instead. I am searching for the family of Adolf NEWFIED (NEUFIELD/NEUFELD) and also NETTIE STEINER (STONE). They were married and came to Danbury, Connecticut around 1885. Adolf's naturalization lists Austria as his country nationality. They came to America with their children, Max, Edward, Coleman, Charlotte and Albert. They all list different places as their places of origin. I have seen Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria and Magyar all listed. I supposed the borders were always changing so I think they were as confused as I am. Nettie had a relative, possibly her brother, William STONE ( I believe he Anglicized his name >from STEINER to STONE) and he listed Magyar as his hometown so I believe that is the true place of where they came from. Can anyone shed light on my problem of where to search for their real origins? Thanks so much. Rishy Savin Miami, FL

Stan Goodman opined on the British Royal family:
For those too young to remember, the change was >from the teutonicStan Goodman could not be more wrong. The British Royal family of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha under King George V changed their family name to Windsor in 1917. This surname remains with the current queen who is married to Prince Philip Mountbatten. Prince Charles will be lthe last of this line as George VII and his son, Prince William will be the first king with the surname Mountbatten. Prince Philip's family name was Battenberg, changed to Mountbatten, but his family ruled elsewhere in Europe (Bulgaria). and had no direct connection to the current queen until 1947. I think you are trying to say that if Caroline Holrie in an institution as a deaf mute, she would appear in the census anyway. I think I would search for her the same way, though, as someone who was not living in an institution, though, and her name is not coming up in the later censuses. Regarding the bounced emails: my apology for that. I meant to write that if you want to answer privately, please remove all numbers >from my email address (to avoid spam).

Stan Goodman <SPAM_FOILER@...>
The British monarchy Anglicized their German surnames during WW1For those too young to remember this, the change was >from the teutonic "Battenberg" to the veddy British "Mountbatten". There is a perhaps apocryphal story that, after the change, some Ginzburgs applied to change their name to "Mountginz". That is the connection with Jewish Genealogy. -- Stan Goodman, Qiryat Tiv'on, Israel Searching: NEACHOWICZ/NOACHOWICZ, NEJMAN/NAJMAN, SURALSKI: Lomza Gubernia ISMACH: Lomza Gubernia, Galicia, and Ukraina HERTANU, ABRAMOVICI, LAUER: Dorohoi District, Romania GRISARU, VATARU: Iasi, Dorohoi, and Mileanca, Romania See my interactive family tree (requires Java 1.1.6 or better). the URL is: http://www.hashkedim.com For reasons connected with anti-spam/junk security, the return address is not valid. Sent: Saturday, August 12, 2006 11:45 AM To: 'jewishgen@lyris.jewishgen.org' Subject: Looking for information on Nachum Shapiro b abt 1860 and the name of someone who is an expert on Shapiro genealogy. Ralph Cilevitz who has researched the name SHAPIRO suggested I post to find the name of a man in Israel who is an expert on the SHAPIRO lineage. He thought the last name was FRIEDMAN. I am looking for Nachum SHAPIRO who eventually emigrated to the US. I think he was born about 1860;. He came with a son named Harry (Girsh?) and a daughter named Sarah (Sora?) who married a GOODMAN. I have a picture of him if there are any other relatives out there. His nephew was >from Vandziogala, but I do not know the exact relationship. Dear Cousins,
In response to Lore's question, my Aunt Alice's name in Lithuania was Asne. In Hebrew name, the name is the same. The name is seen in Genesis 41:45. In Yiddish, the variants are Asnas, Asnat, Asnes, Osnas, and Osnat. >from what I've read, in America, the people with that name were called Asenath, Asna, Asnah, Asne, Mae, Alice & Marissa. Name change PERLA/MEYER

Shari Kantrow
Hello,
How likely is it for a male named Meier PERLA in Lomza to have converted his name to Peter MEYER in Germany on route to America? I have a ship's record Jan 1884 for my g-grandfather Peter MEYER b. abt. 1857 claiming citizenship in Germany. No one else on board claimed citizenship to Russia either. However, on all other documents found created in the U.S., he claims citizenship to Russia or Russian Poland. I found Meier PERLA married to who I believe to be my g-grandmother Guta Kawkiewicz on JRI-Poland. Most of the other information seems to fit including approximate birth and marriage dates. I appreciate all feedback. Thank you.
