A heartwarming story, available exclusively in the JewishGenMall #lodz #poland

Carol W. Skydell <cskydell@...>

In simple prose laced with frequent comments demonstrating a wry
sense of humor, Peninah Rosin tells the story of her "Flight to
Survival" >from Wloclawek to Eretz Yisrael during the years 1939 to 1945.

This is a personal narrative that can only be described as
heartwarming, full of demonstrable courage in the face of
despair. It is not a lengthy book, but worth reading if one wants to
understand what it was like for a seventeen year old to be faced with
Nazi invasion and the resultant disintegration of her close-knit
family unit. Peninah Rosin's book is a compelling read, a story not
soon forgotten. It is a book that is appropriate for teenagers as
well as adults.

If you are in the U.S.or Canada use product code JGI102 to
order If you are not in either of those two countries, please
use product code JGI102I

Proudly published by JewishGen, the book is available for only
$18.50 plus S&H. www.jewishgenmall.org

Re: question on taxing Jews #general

Lili,

Several weeks ago, I raised a question about how the tax-collection system
worked because I had received some documents >from the Grodno Historical Archive
that indicate that some of my family were tax collectors.

Is that the discussion you mean?

Someone posed a question to me regarding Jewish taxation. ( her uncle's
paperwork showed a Jewish Tax. She wondered what that was) .It seems to
me this topic was discussed by this group. I can;can't find it in the

Thank you in advance.

Louis Edelman #general

Steve Orlen

Dear Cousins,

I can't remember the details of the search for the "invented
brother," but I just now went to the Morse Ellis Island site, hit on
the White Form (for both gentiles and Jews), typed in Leib Edelman,
hit on exact for first name and on sounds like and many for the
surname, and came up with 7 almost exact matches & 2 more not too
distant matches.

thank you for translation Lazarus family prayer book #general

barbara

Thank you all who have strained your eyes and helped translate the entries in
the Lazarus family prayer book. While I've corresponded with you individually,
I thought you deserved a general round of thanks as well.

Bertha ABRAHAMS (nee Trotsky) moved >from London, Mile end road to South
Africa in the early 1900's. Moss was one of 7 children, brothers and sisters
names could be Dot, Gabbie. Harry and Samuel, although not confirmed.
Their children are Sandra and Alan Abrahams who were born in Johannesbrg.

I believe that some family moved to England and Australia.
Any information would be helpful.

SUGARMAN family in Los Angeles #general

Dayna <zoeys_mom@...>

I'm searching for a part of my g-GMs family who I'm
told moved >from the area of Boston (Framingham, maybe)
MA. to Los Angeles sometime after the 1940s.

My G-GM was Lena (SUGARMAN) GOLDSTEIN (original given
name Chavalea, 1882-1960), daughter of Moshe & Chaya
Etta of Polonnoye, Ukraine (the parents never left
Europe). She had a younger sister Gittel, who became
Gussie and married Mier/Mike LEVINE in MA. she lived
1889-1968. There was also a brother, Joseph SUGARMAN
(1883-1945) who married Lena CHERTORINSKY. All 3 lived
in the Framingham area with their families.

I'm told there was another SUGARMAN brother who moved
at some point to Southern California. My dad remembers
briefly meeting the family in the early 1950s, but
then they lost touch.

I've already put this up on the JGFF, but thought I
might send out a shot in the dark here. Please respond
privately if you know this family.

"Rumour of a Half-Sibling" #general

Steve Orlen

Yoni,

In my family, the rumor was pretty strong, but the man who abandoned
his first wife and daughter never spoke of them, nor did he tell
anyone their names. After years of not being able to figure out how
to proceed, I finally put my mind to it, and after two weeks of
searching, and much help >from genners, I spoke to the grand-daughter
of this scamp, a 78 year old woman living in Oakland, California. It
wasn't a cold call - some researchers on another side of her family,
whom I found on-line, prepared her. We spoke for an hour, we both
learned a great deal, she ended up crying with happiness.
