re; Change Of Original Jewish Surname (WILSON - Bethnal Green) #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Angela Miles writes: "I am carrying out some research on behalf of a friend of
mine whose father-in-law believes that his mother's family changed their
original Jewish surname to WILSON. They lived in Bethnal Green, London - here
are the details as shown on her marriage certificate:

Marriage - 1 August 1910 - St James The Great Church Bethnal Green
Jane Susannah WILSON (22) & Ernest Edward RENN (20)- Jane's father is Reuben
WILSON.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way I can find out what their original surname
was please?"

I have manipulated the 1891 and 1901 census of England and Wales and have come
up with a WOOLF family that might fit - the question is would WOOLF bother to
change their name to WILSON:

Name: Reuben WOOLF; Age: 47; Estimated birth year: abt 1854
Relation: Head; Spouse's name: Annie
Where born: Austria [this is most probably Galicia]
Civil parish: Limehouse; County: London
Occupation: Stickmaker.

Others in the house: Annie [wife whose age is erroneously given as 76!]
Boader >from Germany: Otto GUNTLACH [stickmaker] aged 60 and all these WOOLF
children: Lilly 8; Iley? [a boy - must be Alexander below] 11; ***Jane*** 13;
Michael 18; Rachel 19.

However in the 1891 census we can see the same family as given below:
Alexander 1; Anny 36; Ggenrie [sic] 3; Harris 10; Josef 11; Michael 8
Rachel Wallis 9; Ruben 37.

And whereas in 1901 all the children were listed as born in England in 1891 all
are born in Austria except for the garbled *Ggenrie* {E{u}genie=Jenny!] and
mysteriously Rachel Wallis aged 9 [was she adopted?], so this family probably
arrived in London abt 1898.

One would require corroborative evidence inc. father's occupation; mother's
name, known siblings of Jane, London Gazette listings of official name changes;
naturalisation records; electoral register comparisons etc to ascertain that
this is indeed the family.

Re: Legacy obituary site #general

Hello Jewish Genners,

The library in Jacksonville subscribes to a ProQuest database, America's Obituaries
and Death Notices. I've found obituaries for family members on here going back to
the 1950s. Occasionally, I'll run across an obituary when doing a name search,
that's even much older. These are full text obituaries, but as the name of the
database states, only for American newspapers. It can also be accessed with my
Florida library card through the Florida state site, Florida Electronic Library.
I'm sure that many libraries in all states subscribe to this database.

Re: BEDILL, BEDEL, BEDIL, ETC. #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

I am trying to trace my paternal family whose original name was BDIL in
Skapiskis and Kupiskis, Lithuania as well as Daugavpils, Latvia. When the
family moved to other countries their name changed in various ways such as
BEDIL, BEDILL, BEDEL, BEDELL.

One family I located began as BDIL, then went to BEDILL and ended as BEDEL.

My present inquiry regards the following individuals whose records I already
have, but whose descendants I would like to locate so as to confirm that
they are >from my BDIL family:

Morris L. Bedill, 1880 - 1963, who worked at the Byron Hot Springs Hotel in
Contra Costa County, CA, in 1920, and died in Mendocino County, CA.

Max M. Bedel (1917-1999) and Benjamin Bedel (1917-1994), who were twins and
the children of Sam Bedel and Sarah Levitoff. They lived in California.

Please contact me privately if you should know of the families of these
individuals.

Thanks,

Re: Israeli city name in POT #general

Steven,
Sometimes it is helpful to look at other pages of testimony submitted by the
same individual, as it is sometimes the case that some have more legible
handwriting than others. I found a page of testimony submitted by the same Shmuel
SHOSHAN for Anna KORSHAN, which shows Shmuel's residence as
mem-vav-Tzadi-ALEF Ayin-Yud-Lamed-Yud-Taf. This is Motza Illit (which is a suburb
of Jerusalem). I did a quick google search on the zip code given in the page of
testimony, 90820, and confirmed that this corresponds to Motza Illit.

Best of luck,
