Is anyone planning a visit to the Massachusetts Archives?

Hoping some one could with a handful of certificates. I have the data >from the
online archives so hopefully it is fairly easy to do.

I live in New York though so I don't have any way to get there. I know I can do
mail order but it would hopefully be easier/faster if someone happens to be going
that way.

I might be able to trade some research time in New York when I next go to our
library/archives.

Thanks in advance if someone can help me out.

Searching for roots: SCHWARTZ in Curacao in Sept. 1856 #general

Samira Schwartz <samirasch@...>

Hi everyone,

My father is researching our roots but desafortunately we haven't been able to find
it. My father's grandfather's name was: Jacob Haim Israel SCHWARTZ and was born in
Curacao on the 25 September 1856. We have the name of his parents (without birth or
death dates) and brother, but we don't know where they come from, this is really
what we'd like to know. We really would like to build our genealogyc tree.

Is it possible through internet to find a list with Jewish people born in Curacao
for that time and know where did their parents come from? We have search but not
success :(

Thanks in advance!

In 1930, in what section of Brooklyn was 167 Hertzl Street #general

Steve Schor <lhnumis@...>

Dear Mr. Orlen:

I may have it wrong, but, the "Herzl" not "Hertzl" Street with which
I am familiar is in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. 167 Herzl would
probably be between either Pitkin Avenue and Sutter Avenue or between Sutter
Avenue and Blake Avenue. I lived near the corner of Sutter and Amboy Streets.
Amboy Street was one block east of Herzl Street. Trust this of some help.

Best,

Steve Schor

BUCHALTER/BEAR family #general

ToadysFroggy <54amp5@...>

My great grandfather Shmuel BUCHALTER had a brother who also came to the United
States but somehow during his entering of the US, the immigration officer must have
misunderstood him when he tried to say BUCHALTER and gave him the name of Samuel
BEAR. Both settled in the Philadelphia area. My great grandfather married Dora
and had my grandfather and my great uncle Joseph. I would like to find information
on my great grandfather's family as well as anything more about Samuel Bear and his
branch of my family.

The only things I know about Samuel Bear:
- is he married a Polish woman named Rose and they moved >from the Philadelphia area
to Los Angeles.
- he was born Sep 25, 1884
- he died Mar 21, 1961

If you can help me, I would greatly appreciate it!

Re: Burial Records, Chevra Kadisha, Johannesburg, South Africa #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

I was not sure where you were looking for information, but there are three ALMAN
listings in the SA Jewish Rootsbank aka Rootsweb site which provides information on
South African Jewish families including cemetery information:

http://chrysalis.its.uct.ac.za/CGI/cgi_RootWeb.exe

Unfortunately, there are only three cemetery records for your ALMAN family which
are listed and no other kinds of records.

Apparently, two of the cemetery records were for a husband and wife and the third
perhaps a child or other relative. Their name, birth and death dates, age at time
of death, and cemetery plot # in the Westpart I cemetery are provided.

If you are interested in learning more information such as what is on the
tombstone, such as any Hebrew giving the father's name, you will probably have to
hire someone to do that.

In addition, you can look at the National Archives of South Africa site which has
25 listings for ALMAN:

http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300ds?200703201043210EAD4B44

A third thing you can do is post an inquiry on the SA SIG digest on JewishGen
asking about descendants of your ALMAN family.

Another thing you can do is look through the SA SIG web site on JewishGen for tips
on how to research your South African family:

http://www.jewishgen.org/safrica

Good luck!

The Certificate of Arrival information is almost, but not quite, useless: there is
no longer any index (if there ever was one) in existence that cross-references this
number. However, there are two pieces of information you can glean >from it:
1) I have found that, for the ones I have researched, the date of issue was usually
two weeks before the Petition date; 2) the number is of the form DD-NNNNN, and the
DD is the district number where the Petition for Naturalization was filed. See
the Manifest Markings page here for an explanation:
http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/Manifests/occ/

If a Soundex index exists for the district and time period of interest, you may get
lucky: I've discovered that the women I've researched were indexed under both their
married and maiden names, but that may be due to the timing of their marriages
relative to their Declaration and Petition dates, rather than a general rule.

One other piece of advice: if given the choice between getting the film showing the
Declaration vs. the film showing the Petition, go for the Petition, since in many
cases, it contains a copy of the entire Naturalization record, including the
Declaration, Certificate of Arrival, and Citizenship Certificate.
