Re: Any possibility of Orla Records #poland

David M. Fox <davefox73@...>

In the absence of BMD records for Orla (please note that there are variant
spellings: Orliany, Alova, Orlja, Orlova , Orlowa, and Orlya), you may want
to check the 1897 All Russia Census for Grodno Gubernia which is online. It
can be searched >from the JewishGen Belarus Database. This database has the
place where the person was born, registered, and where they were living at
the time of the census. These could be three different locations. While
this database only survived in fragments, what did survive does include a
number of records where Orla is note as one of the three locations for
individuals. I found records for my wife's family with origins is
Bialystock. You may want to search by location name or do a global search
for a place name.

Happy hunting.

German/Austrian Jews Circa 1905 "Zim" #general

Sabra Waldfogel

Dear Genners:
I hope that you can help me. I just acquired a beautiful pitcher, made
of nickel silver, by the WMF (Wurttemburgische Metalfabribrik) company,
dating >from around 1905-1910. It is designed in the Jugendstil/Art
Nouveau style popular in Germany and Austria at the time. It is
inscribed "Zim" in the Roman alphabet, and the same syllable in the
Hebrew alphabet (tsaddi-yod-mem in Hebrew letters). Does anyone know
what this might refer to? Is it a family name, an acronym, or a company
name? WMF made many pieces in its heyday, but almost all of them were
intended for a German and German-speaking market, so the Hebrew letters
on the piece are a mystery. Any light you can shed would be welcome.

Non-Jewish victims? #general

It is my understanding that in addition to its thrust against the Jews,
that the Nazis targeted other groups, such as Gypsies, Homosexuals and
religions such as Jehovah's Witnesses. I do not know if the Nazis
targeted other groups.

I would like to know if the Jewishgen databases and the databases at
places such as Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and so on, include the names of
these non-Jewish victims. If they do, how are these victims identified?
Also if they do, is it possible to sort though the databases to extract
those names?

Surnames FACHLER, GARNER, ROSENBLUM & JOSEFOWICZ #general

Does anyone have any information on the FACHLER family? They were from
Lodz, Poland and became FRANKILIN in the US and Fashler in Canada.
Immigrated in approximately 1906. (I may have located an uncle, but
his ethnicity is not listed as "Hebrew" on passenger list at Ellis
Island.)

Also searching for ROSENBLUM--was JOSEFOWICZ in Lodz, and became
Rosenblum via cousins in US.

Also researching GARNER, similarly Jews >from Lodz who immigrated to
US in early 1900s.

(All of above are my grandparents family names.)

Also, is the Ellis Island documentation based on written information
or oral information >from the passengers?

Thank you much for any information you may be able to share.

Success Story #general

Hallo JewishGenners

I recently got onto the JGFF (Jewish Gen Family Finder) to look for a name I
felt was *not* a common name, and they did ask , in the event of a "hit" to
please share the story with the members.

I have been doing a Family Tree for a friend, and I was looking His
Grandfather's name Abraham SUSSLOVITCH, which had been later changed to
KATZ on his arrival in Hull, England, en route to Dublin, Ireland.

I felt sure that Abraham SUSSLOVITCH (Katz) could not have been an only
child, and I decided to have a search. I saw on JGFF a woman who had her
name down as being a SUSLOVITCH researcher. I didnt worry about the one "S"
instead of two..

I had an immediate response >from her and she lives in the USA. I won't go
into the emails between us, but suffice to say great excitement all around.
She told me she lives in Connecticut and the friend I am doing the Tree for
lives in S.Africa (ex Dublin). However, he was leaving the very next day
for New York, and New Jersey, USA, and they arranged to meet.

Much excitment, apparently the family resemblance was so strong, that there
could be no mistaking the relationship. They are 2nd cousins, sharing the
same Great Grandparents.

This whole story happened in 48 hours. Up until Wed night, neither of them
knew about one another. By Sat, they had met up, and as I understand it
(with all the exitement it's difficult to grasp what everyone is saying)
they are meeting up in London, England, to see their Great Grandmother's
Grave.

Because of the name change to KATZ (and that is another story!) , the cousin
in the USA did not manage to ever trace the Irish contingent.

I am very grateful to JGFF for the wonderful service they provide, and had
it not been for them, this would not have been at all possible. It's
actually amazing, and it has been instrumental in helping me to connect two
2nd cousins, whose respective family branches lost all contact with each
other, possibly about 70 years ago or more.

Thank you! Todah Rabah!

Hallo Jewish Genners

I have been asked by a friend to please find her mother's family. The
family were originally Jewish >from Spain, a Gabrielle and Mizrachi MOGRABI
(unsure of the spelling). There were Six MOGRABI children, Julius, Walter,
Joseph, Miriam, Solly (a Boxer) and Esther (Australia) Miriam MOGRABI
married Dudley HANNIGAN, An Irishman. They had a daughter called Patricia
Rosemary HANNIGAN, born in Springs, South Africa. Patricia Rosemary
married a Mr. SMITH and had a daughter , Liz SMITH (now SMIT). Liz has
become interested in her Jewish Roots, and as far as I can see, seeing as
the entire Mother line were Jewish, that Liz herself, according to Halacha,
would be Jewish?? I have never heard of the name MOGRABI before, supposedly
a Sephardi name. It is possible Liz has it wrong, and before I start to
search, can anyone please tell me if they have ever heard of the name
MOGRABI, and if this name is incorrect, if they know the correct name. It
might be a well known name to some, but not to me.

I suppose I need to say that all replies should be sent to me at
digitalphoto@icon.co.za OR if anyone thinks it is of general interest, then
they could possibly reply on Jewish Gen.

Thank you!!

Hello, Dear Colleagues!

I'm trying to find as many details as possible about the family BRILL from
Bursztyn, Ukraine (formerly in Galicia).

I know almost nothing about this family (this is the reason to this general
question), but it may be recognized by its famous member: Colonel Moshe
BAR-KOKHVA (BRILL) (born 1930, Burztyn, Ukraine; died 1992, Tel Aviv,
Israel), one of Israel's great heroes. His father name is Maximilian.

I know Moshe's family in Israel, and together with them I'm trying to
connect with other relatives.

new web site about Jewish cemeteries in Poland #general

Andrew Blumberg <ajb61@...>

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before but there is a new web
site with descriptions, photos and video of Jewish cemeteries and
synagogues in Poland. The web site is located at
http://www.kirkuty.xip.pl/indexang.htm.

The videos are being uploaded to YouTube and embedded into the pages of
the other web site, which means you can find the collection on YouTube at
http://www.youtube.com/kaurismakipl. One of the videos on YouTube was
uploaded four days ago so it looks like they are still adding material.

This group is covering a long list of towns. The list is at
http://www.kirkuty.xip.pl/fotogalerie.htm. Each town has a description
in Polish and some photos. Some of the towns also have a link to an English
translation. The entry for Bielsk Podlaski has an English translation,
photos and video of the cemetery there. The entry for Bransk has a long
description in Polish with several photos but no English translation or
video.

I think many readers will find this site interesting. I wonder if there
might be some way for JewishGen or affiliated groups to cooperate with
them.

I have no connection with the creators of the site.
