JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Dear Genners,
Does any one know if a 1906 Minneapolis marriage license application would name the parent's of the bride? Hi to all of you
I decided to give up. It is now more than fifteen years that I am looking for my grandfather's daughter Dvora Glaser but with no response. It is now my last try and here are the details: My grandfather Chaim GLASER lived in Przemysl before the second world war. He had a daughter called Dvora (Dora or Dova), who was born in 1927. The last time my family heard >from them was in 1939. Chaim Glaser was married to my grandmother Helena-Chaya in Vienna. In the early twenties he got divorced, left Vienna and moved to Przemysl(Poland), He got married a second time in the year 1926 to Rachella Stolzberg and had this one daughter. In 1939 he was about 43 years old and she was 12 years old. In case any one of the readers can help me finding what happened to them please be so kind to inform me inform me. To your knowledge. My contribution is much more personal - by total coincidence, today I am celebrating the 156th birthday of my gt-grandmother Betty {nee TEDESKO} WOTTITZ born Pressburg, 23 June 1851, and I am sitting next to her lovely portrait. Her father Leopold, born 15 March 1818 in Pressburg, was a leader of the Jewish community in Pressburg, and a founder of the liberal community. You can see his photograph in Hugo Gold's book on the Jews of Bratislava [same as Pressburg], with my other gtgt grandfather Emanuel BIACH and other family members who were eminent in this community. I have a complete TEDESKO family tree after Leopold and knew/know personally many of the descendants who all moved to Vienna after 1848. Leopold is buried in Vienna in Doblinger Friedhof and so are many TEDESKO descendants. The trouble is I have never got further back than 1818 as the very early Pressburg records have been stolen, according to a reliable source. However, here is an interesting fact. My grandmother's first cousin, Lilly nee TEDESKO [Pressburg 10 Feb 1885 > Vienna till 1938> died England 25 Jan 1983] always told me that we were related to the composer CASTELNUOVO TEDESCO. She knew many early family links and her mind remained clear well into her 90s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Castelnuovo-Tedesco I have no idea if this was hearsay or a known link. Now I am beginning to wonder whether the Trieste rabbi was originally >from Bohemia or Moravia [Habsburg territory] via Spain perhaps and could also be a family member? It is the WOTTITZ family of Pressburg, that I have linked back to Isaac ALFASI of Fez [1013] just last week. Betty TEDESKO married Gustav WOTTITZ born Pressburg 1 May 1841 - they are my gt-grandparents. Gustav WOTTITZ's gtgt grandfather Juda Melamed TRITSCH [born in ? abt 1750 - died Pressburg 1st Nissan 1825] met Napoleon and pleaded successfully for a Yom Kippur holiday for Jewish soldiers. This is well-documented in an article I found recently. These interrelated BIACH TEDESKO TRITSCH WOTTITZ families probably arrived in Pressburg in the mid-late 1700s >from Bohemia and Moravia, escaping >from the Familianten Act which restricted marriage to the first-born son. SS Weser or Wesser

Simon Barak
I am presenting the forum with a mistery worthy of Sherlock Holmes.
As you most probably know the first settlers of Moises Ville, the agricultural colony situated in the North of the Province of Santa Fe, Argentina 616 km. >from Buenos Aires, were a group of Russian Jewish colonists arriving in August 1889 aboard the SS Wesser >from Kamenetz-Podolsk, Ukraine. Moises Ville is regarded as the first agricultural Jewish colony in South America and these 130 families (815 individuals) are the Argentinean equivalent to the Mayflower passengers. They arrived to Buenos Aires aboard the steamship Weser on the 16th of August, 1889. According to the data in the Internet (http://www.fortunecity.com/littleitaly/amalfi/13/ships.htm http://www.geocities.com/mppraetorius/main-com1.htm) there were at least 4 or maybe 5 ships named Wesser or Weser (1) a.k.a. Peter Goddefroy was built in 1851 and lost in 1858 (stranded on the west coast of Ireland) (2) was built in 1867 and served the Southampton-New York line from 1/6/1867 until 13/6/1895 when she was transferred to the Bremen -S.America service for two round voyages and later scrapped in 1896. (3) (a.k.a. Vancouver Island) was built only in 1928 (4)was launched on 4/12/1858, but had to put back to Cork for repairs after being damaged by heavy seas. She sailed >from Cork on 6th March 1859 and arrived in New York on 18th March. She started her third and last Bremen - Southampton - New York voyage on 1st July 1859, and became a French Naval Transport later the same year. On 16/1/1861 she was wrecked 60 miles >from Poulo Condor, Cochin China. So none of the ships could make the voyage!! Any solutions? Dr Shimon Barak Israel

Alleged Killing of Bohemian Jewish Businessmen
#general
Paul King <samorai@...>
Roger Adler seeks (22 June 2007), concerning "Jewish businessmen murdered in
Bohemia" in 1847, a list of victims. I am not aware of multiple murders taking place and it would be helpful if a source were supplied. I do know that Jewish factories were attacked by mobs in 1844 and again in the Revolution of 1848 - this is documented, but there is no record of Jewish businessmen being killed. It surely would have been noted in the writings of William O. McCagg who stresses Judeophobia in Bohemia at this time or by Hillel Kieval who has written at length on a blood libel case. Despite rising Czech nationalism at midcentury, Jews became prominent members of the Prague Chamber of Commerce in the 1850s and possibly in the following decade. respectfully, Paul King Jerusalem

DURAN- MONTEFIORE: N. Africa - London - Kingston, Jamaica link established, 1849.
#general
Celia Male <celiamale@...>
I thought I had finished with this saga but some extra *very important* items
have arisen. Firstly, congratulations to Mathilde Tagger for having found CORCOS-DURAN family links through this correspondence! Victor BENSILUM has also found Angela Hurst to be his third-cousin and Sidney CORCOS has many more additions for his great family tree. The trouble is that these early Sephardic inhabitants of England are often mistranscribed in the censuses so unless you use *tactics*, you will not find them. Look what I found by fiddling around in the 1841 census of England: Name: Bamp DURAK [clearly legible to me as Baruch DURAN] Age: 42 Estimated birth year: abt 1799 born: this is unclear. Civil parish: St Botolph Aldersgate; Occupation: traveller Household Members: Simta [sic] should be Simha 34; Abraham 12; Isaac 12; Rosella [Rosetta?] 8; Hannah 6; Miriam 4; Moses 2 Abraham and Isaac DURAN emigrated to the USA in the 1850s and Abraham married Rebecca MONTEFIORE on 21st Oct 1849, before emigrating. I just heard about the MONTEFIORE link >from their gtgt grandson Sidney CORCOS, who allowed me to quote. Sidney entered the loop in Israel. Isaac and descendants stayed in the USA. Sidney has entered a MONTEFIORE tree on the FTJP, where you can see many links. However as MONTEFIORE, this branch was not to be found in the England 1841 and 1851 censuses, although we know they were there. As this link is fascinating, I was determined to locate them and find out more. Rebecca DURAN's father was named Abraham {deceased} on the fascsimile of the wedding certificate. Baruch DURAN, her father-in-law, was a spice dealer. I have found Baruch - see above. Who were Rebecca DURAN's MONTEFIORE family? I now know they were a very important family in Sephardic Judaism in London. Abraham was a cousin of the very famous Sir Moses MONTEFIORE. In the 1841 census, Abraham MONTEFIORE is indexed as *MONTIFORE*, lives in Stepney, and his profession is listed as "keeper of the grounds" and in the margin is written: "Spanish and Portuguese Burial Ground". And here is the huge family: Abraham MONTEFIORE 52; Stella 37 [fb=foreign born]; Abigail 19 fb; Isaac 16 fb; David 14 fb; Esther 12 fb; Rebecca 10; Flora 6; Rachael 3; Evelina 1. In 1851, I found them eventually listed as *MONTEFURE* and here we read that Rebecca's mother Stella [now a widow] was born in Kingston, Jamaica! The oldest son David [born 1828] is born in Plymouth, Devon! Perhaps on the way back from Kingston? Another sea-faring Sephardic family to rival the DURAN? Sidney Corcos tell us on the FTJP that Stella alias Estrella's parents were Isaac HATCHWELL and Abigail BENHAM - but Sidney has no place of birth for Stella. What were these names originally - ben HAIM perhaps and HATCHWELL? - Any guesses >from our Genners? There were/are still Jewish HATCHWELL in Jamaica in World War II see: http://jamaicanfamilysearch.com/Samples/milww1-2.htm and these links: http://www.jgsgb.org.uk/hn.shtml and Mauricio TOLEDANO HATCHWELL - Spanish Jewish leader http://muweb.millersville.edu/~columbus/data/art/JARQUIN1.ART http://dark-truth.blogspot.com/2007/06/madrid-bombings-redux-what-really.html This is a large new chapter in the saga and I await HATCHWELL input >from other Genners; I have already found a HATCHWELL/N. Africa link in the UK censuses. Celia Male [U.K.] Footnote: Key names so far on these trees are: BENHAM; BENSILUM; CORCOS; de COSTA; DURAN/DURAND; HATCHWELL, OHAYON, LEVY; de MEDINA; MOCATTA; MONTEFIORE, RACAH, etc etc This amazing Sephardic family tree now has very early established links to Spain; Majorca; N. Africa; Livorno; Gibraltar; Malta; Kingston, Jamaica; London; USA etc etc
