Family of Solomon Zelman GLOBUS #rabbinic

sbloom@...

I am looking for information on the family and descendants of
Solomon Zelman GLOBUS, who apparently married a great great
grandchild of R. Yechiel HEILPERIN ("Seder Hadorot"), as noted in
Neil Rosenstein's _Lurie Legacy_.

I don't have much more information, though he (GLOBUS) was son of
Eliezer, and died in 1831. If I counted generations right, he was
likely born around 1760. I don't know where, though possibly Vilna,
since it looks like earlier in this line, an ancestor (of GLOBUS'
wife) was "Yechiel of Vilna" , son-in-law to R. Yechiel HEILPERIN.

Going on this theory, I do notice in the Lithuanian Revision Lists a
"Berko GLOBUS", son of Zelman, born in 1791, and living in Vilnius
proper. His wife was Miriam, and his children were Chaim Ovsey,
Israel Movsha, and Peysakh. Given location, timing, and name of
father, I think this is potentially the correct family.

Since I am looking to compile a documented genealogy of Yechiel
HEILPERIN (I know, I know--good luck!), down to the present day (I
had previous postings regarding my own potential direct descent from
him), I'd appreciate additional information on the aforementioned
Solomon Zelman GLOBUS and whether or not he was in Vilnius, and
whether this family in the Revision Lists is his.

Thanks!

Lisa Betros asked:
" I've found what I think could be connections between the names CHIADAN and
GORDIN or GORDON among the records of my relatives >from Russia/Latvia. Do any of
the more knowledgeable members of the message board see any connection between the
two names?"

Sounds quite plausible to me. The "CH" could certainly represent the guttural
sound of the Russian "G" which is actually the same as the sound of Russian "H" --
half-way between the two, actually (which is why Gurwitz is an alternate spelling
of Hurwitz or Horowitz!). So it is easy to imagine CHIADAN (which would have been
pronounced CHYA-DAN) being anglicized to the soundalike GOR-DON. No connection in
meaning, of course, just a soundalike.

While on the subject of origins of names, I will mention in passing that the
recently-discussed name TANHUM does not originate in Greek or Latin (as I think
someone suggested) but >from Aramaic. It actually goes back to Rabbi Tanhuma ben
Abba, a prominent 4th-century Amora mentioned in the Talmud of the Land of Israel
(which BTW is the correct name of the "Palestinian Talmud".)

Simon GREENBERG #general

Genners,

I am trying to locate descendants of Simon GREENBERG. I think he was a printer in
New York City. His wife's maiden name might have been FILMUS or FELMUS. Simon's
brother was definitely Samuel GREENBERG (Shapsa GRUNBERG) >from Odessa, Russia.
Samuel arrived in NYC with his wife, Kate (Gittel RUDLOFF), in 1893 aboard the S.S.
Wieland. Samuel and Kate's children were: Beckie, Louis, Max, Dora, Birdie and
Tillie. Samuel was a cigar maker.

I am related to the Greenberg family through Gittel RUDLOFF but might also be
related through Simon GREENBERG's wife. I need to confirm suspicions.

Solomon Zelman GLOBUS #general

sbloom@...

I am looking for more information on the family of Solomon Zelman GLOBUS who lived
from c. 1760-1831. He was the son of Eliezer, and married a great granddaughter of
Jehiel HEILPERIN ("Seder Hadorot"). I believe she had no known surname, and was not
a direct male line descendant of R. Jehiel (so did not have the name HEILPERIN). At
one point, this family was in Vilna, but I do not know if Solomon GLOBUS and his
descendants were. I do find in the Revision Lists of Lithuania , a Berko GLOBUS
b. 1791, who was son of Zelman, and lived in Vilnius proper. His children were:
Chaim Ovsey, Israel Movsha, and Pesach. He was married to Miryam. There are known
grandchildren as well, so I think its promising to link this particular branch to
the present day.

I would appreciate it if someone could contact me privately if they have
information on Solomon GLOBUS or known descendants and whether or not this family
in the Revision Lists is likely to be the same people.

I am looking in general to find information pertaining to modern day descendants of
Jehiel Heilperin, since it has been alleged that my great great great great
grandfather, Eliasz Nuchem Halpern, descends directly >from him. This part of the
GLOBUS family would be my distant cousins.

Thanks!

Photo Studios in Wysokie Mazowieckie, Poland #general

Would anyone know if there were any photo studios in Wysokie Mazowieckie, Poland in
the early 1900's? I have a picture postcard of my great-uncle that was taken around
1910 at the H.E. Hawin Photo Studio in Zambrow, Poland, and this made me wonder if
he actually lived in Zambrow instead of Wysokie Mazowieckie. I would interested to
know what photo studios existed in both Wysokie Mazowieckie and Zambrow in the
early 1900's.

Finding Records in South Africa #general

Debbie Bozkurt <debbieinscotland@...>

I am trying to trace my Great Uncle's movements >from Poland (ibzica kujswska I
think) in the early part of this century. His name was Solly LACHMAN/LATCHMAN. I
have been told by his grandson that he has photos of him in South African. Solly
married in 1906 in London and his wife was on the census with her family in 1901. I
can only assume he was in South Africa between the late 1890s and early 1900s. His
sister married bymy great grandfather in 1898 in London so by means of deduction
if the whole family left about the same time (parents and another brother and
sister) Solly may have entered South Africa about 1898.

Has anyone any idea how I can go about tracing his movements in South Africa, was
there a weekly jewish paper. I tried the South African database but couldn't find
anything. Don't know if there are any records of passenger movements.

Any help would most appreciated.

Thanks
