Re: Jewish Life in Botosani #romania

Hi Luc,

I have the book "Departures: Beyond Recognition" and I have read it. About
one-third of the novel is set in 19th Century Romania. The story begins in
Romania (in the town of Galati), moves to France, then back to Romania, and
finally back to France. IMHO, the story does give one an idea of what life
was Jewish life was like in Romania of that era.

To paraphrase another source (albeit unknown), "RTFB"!

Cheers!

To paraphrase Bibi N, better no book than a wrong book. I have not read
"Departures..." but just >from the publisher description below, I highly
doubt
one will get a good idea about Jewish life in 19th century
Moldavia/Romania. I am aware of only one book by G. Sternberg, a monograph
of Stefanesti, which could be of interest but it is mostly relevant to
post 1900.

I believe the best source of information are the entries in the YIVO
Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe, published in 2008.

Moshe and Paula from Orla, Poland, update #poland

Eli Rabinowitz

Hi All

My research on Moshe and Paula, both >from Orla, Poland took a
dramatically turn this week, with updates >from both Canada and South
Africa.

The narrative originated in Orla and ended suddenly in South Africa.

However, my research started 80 years later in Australia and has taken
me to Poland, Belarus, the Baltics, Israel, the UK, Germany, South
Africa and North America.

I share my experiences about the challenges of travelling and
researching in different archives and libraries. Top of the list was
visiting Belarus and the State Archives in Grodno.

This led me to start writing and managing KehilaLinks as a volunteer,
beginning with the Orla KehilaLink and now extending to cities as
diverse as Shanghai, Berlin, Kimberley and Perth, 24 in all:

Search for MAYER graves in NY #germany

Daniela Tobias <daniela.tobias@...>

We are searching for the graves of Sophia and Moses MAYER. They fled from
Muellenbach, Kaisersesch, Cochem-Zell to New York in May 1940.

They lived with their daughter Erna LEINHOS in the Bronx. Moses MAYER died
there on August 24, 1943 (adress: 922 Simpson street).

Sophia MAYER, nee TOBIAS died in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, in December
1962. Erna COSTAS was the only heiress. We have that information >from a
compensation file.

We don't know what happened to the other daughters Frieda and Selma MAYER,
who came to NY in 1929 and 1937.

Erna COSTAS died in Mc Lean, Fairfax, Virginia, on March 22, 2000. She
probably had no children and we don't know anything about her husband.

We'd appreciate very much if anybody of Bronx or Suffolk County could
watch out for Moses and Sophia's graves or provide any information about
the family.

Jews' Free School Spitalfields #general

Louise Messik <louisemessik@...>

For the past twelve months I have been transcribing the entry registers
of the Jews' Free School, Spitalfields. The permission for this project
was granted most enthusiastically both by the school and the London
Metropolitan Archives who house the JFS archive.

20,000 records have been added to the database search
www.jewishgen.org/databases/UK.

These records are entries >from c.1856 to c.1907 and contain name of
both pupil and parent or guardian, address, date of entry, previous
school (where noted), date of birth, date of leaving and reason for
leaving school. There is an accompanying page to be found at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/UK/JFS/index.html.

I do hope that many researchers will benefit >from my project.

Re: ID New York Cemetery #general

Deborah Blankenberg

Looks like a one-letter transcription error. The original death certificate
would actually say "Soc M.R. Ocean View." My paternal grandfather, who died
in 1931, is buried in the same place. It stands for "Society Mount Richmond,
Ocean View Cemetery" and I believe the cemetery still exists, although
I haven't been there in probably 50 years. FindAGrave.com
(http://www.findagrave.com/index.html) lists it as Mount Richmond Cemetery.
It is in Staten Island, N.Y., at 420 Clarke Avenue. FindAGrave has 8,757
interments listed there, with photographs of about 3% of the graves,
so if you search the individual's name, you might have some luck in finding
him or her.

Deborah

Tammy Weingarten tasu1@aol=
"Sec M.R. Ocean View" is listed on a death index for an individual
who died in Manhattan, NY in 1909.

M. R. stands for Mt. Richmond Cemetery on Staten Island.
You can still call them or visit but if memory serves me correctly
all their files are by date of death. But that was at least ten years
ago when I was there so they may have changed their databases. The
Rabbis there are very helpful.

Seeking Records from Palestine (Ukraine>Palestine>US) #general

Friends:

I am trying to locate information on several family members during their
time in Mandate Palestine. These family members left >from Minkovitz, Ukraine

Jaffa to the U.S. and in 1925 three others followed suit.

Might there be any records of their immigration in to Palestine >from Minkovitz?
Might there be any records about their stay in Jaffa? Might there be
passport or visa information related to their departure >from Jaffa to the

I seek Fishel Dick, born in 1906, who left Jaffa on the S.S. Madonna on
