Bernard REDER / REIFER, Sculptor from Czernowitz / Cernauti / Chernivtsi #general

Jane Reifer <cluttercontrol@...>

Does anyone have family information on Bernard REDER, the well-known
sculptor >from Czernowitz / Cernauti / Chernivtsi? My REIFER cousins
always told me he was a REIFER and used to visit him when he and his
wife Gusti lived in New York (he immigrated through Cuba in 1943).
I have never been able to establish a connection, althought I've
researched this the best I can, with my family, Google, Ancestry,
Yad vaShem, the Czernowitz website, JewishGen databases and archives,
and only come up with Bernard's Social Security number, and a
few passenger travel manifests - one for Bernard in
1955, 2 for Gusti in 1950 and 1956, and one for Bernard's mother in
1949.
Gusti's birth surname may have been KORN or GINGOLD.

Does anybody know of this family personally? I'm happy to share
what I know, too.

Many thanks,

Jane Ehrlich Reifer

Re: Hair color hane? #general

Peter Zavon <pzavon@...>

A quick internet search shows that henna is the name of a plant native to
tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, southern Asia and Australasia.
The flower is the source of a red dye that has been used for hair coloring
since Biblical and Roman times. It is apparently called "Camphire" in the
Song of Songs and the Song of Solomon.

During the 19th century a substantial trade in henna developed >from Turkey
to Europe, to the extent that products were sold as "black henna", "red
henna," "blonde henna," and "neutral henna" or "white henna." Only the "red
henna" actually contained product >from the henna plant.

According to http://www.hennaforhair.com/history/19thc.html, by the
beginning of the 20th century, "henna" was a universal term for "hair dye."

I don't find any ready internet reference to "hane" in connection with hair
color.

As I mentioned here the other day, the Jewish records at the Jackson
Blvd., Queens FHC have been transferred to the Center for Jewish History
on 16th St. in Manhattan. See
http://www.jgsny.org/microfiche.htm
for a list of the films there.

You might also check the microfilm holdings of the Goldman Center

Unfortunately I can't order the film to my nearest FHC

(only viewing) which will not help me with a document in old Polish.
The next nearest FHC is located 250 km away.

Identifying town names from Port of Entry Manifest #general

Shelly Crane

Hello,
Will someone kindly please take a look at my grandmother,
great grandmother and Gr. uncle's Port of Entry Manifest?
Can't post the entire page, but if you need to compare
handwriting >from other passengers on the manifest, the
details are as follows:

Ester GLASS (born 1898), Zipe GLASS (nee SHIFFMAN, born 1869)
and Abram GLASS (born 1899) arrived Ellis Island on August 17,
1909 out of Libau on The Birma. They are passengers 14, 15, 16.

I have 3 questions:
Viewmate: http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=11028.
Last Permanent Residence

Viewmate: http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=11029
2. Street Address in Pittsburgh where they are going to be
with my great grandfather, M. GLASS
3. Place of birth for Zipe
Tried to make them out, but can't identify the towns and
street address in Pittsburgh, PA.

Presumably both the place of birth and most recent residence
are in the Ukraine (approximately 85 miles southwest of Kiev,
near a shtetl called Belilovka), but that could be wrong and
am hoping someone will recognize the towns.

Please respond privately.

Thank you and Happy New Year,

I am looking for descendants of Jacob & Libby Taber (nee Klepper).
They came to New York >from Iasi, Romania around 1900.
They had six children Isidore, Abraham and William who were born in Romania.
Jean (b1902), Sidney (b1911) and Manuel (b1916) were all born in New York.
According to the 1930 census they were living at 858 Intervale Avenue,
Bronx, NY. I believe Abraham married Amelia Glass in 1924 and Jean married
